The Crusaders’ 42-25 loss to the Lions in Sunday’s Super Rugby
semi-final brought down the curtain on Todd Blackadder’s time
as coach. With the team having failed to capture a title in his
eight seasons in charge, The Star asked people whether they
thought he had done a good job.
Steve Gibling, of

manager: “I think
he has done a good
job. It’s a really tight
competition here in
New Zealand and
he is an All Blacks
and Canterbury
legend so I am a bit
of a fan. He has had
some interesting
player issues to deal
with and I guess it
puts it in context
of how awesome
the Crusaders were
back in 2007 when
they last won the
title.”
John Semau,
student: “I think
he has done a great
job but it has just
come to the time
when they need
something different.
Canterbury need
a new coach and
basically I think
there just needs to
be a bit of a change
because eight
seasons is a long
time. They haven’t
won a title in the
last few seasons so
it’s probably best
they find someone
new to take over.”
Rose Riley, of
Papanui, retired:
“Pretty much, yes
[he has done a
good job]. I think
sometimes the
coaches are not
given a fair go. As
far as the Crusaders
go – was he given
long enough? Yes,
but I just think they
are not playing as
well as they could at
the moment.”
Terence Logan, of
Woolston, retired:
“He’s a good coach.
You can’t always
blame the coach
when the players
are the ones on the
field. Players can
play their game
but the coach can
only coach. I think
they’ve been a good
team and Todd
Blackadder has
done a good job.”
Marcus Sinclair, of
St Albans, painter:
“I don’t think [that
he has been a good
coach] and I think
he cannot change
tactics when he has
the half time lead
– that’s one of his
problems.”
Bruce Skinner, of
Upper Riccarton,
quality assurance
officer: “I think
he has done
remarkably well. He
is a popular coach
and the team seem
to respect him.”
Neil Lewer, of
Addington, retired:
“He’s done very
good. I wouldn’t
think [that the lack
of titles is an issue].”
Jean Lorenz, of
Burwood, retired:
“I don’t know why
he is retiring. I
think he has been
a really good coach
right through.”
