Waiora: Te ū kai pō – The Homeland by Hone Kouka will begin at the theatre next month. The play was written about 20 years ago by Kouka for the New Zealand International Arts Festival. But Kouka said he wanted to write a play for his parents, which highlighted their experiences moving from the East Cape to the South Island. Kouka was born in Balclutha before spending the first 11 years of his life in Rangiora. His parents have lived in Rangiora for about 30 years and Kouka still considers himself a Cantabrian. He currently resides in Wellington. Kouka was the winner of the Bruce Mason Playwriting Award in 1992 and co-founded theatre company Tawata Productions. He became a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to contemporary PERFORMANCE: Kim Garrett with acclaimed New Zealand playwright Hone Kouka during a rehearsal for the upcoming production Waiora: Te ū kai pō – The Homeland at The Court Theatre. Maori theatre in June 2009. Waiora: Te ū kai pō – The Homeland tells the story of 18-year-old Rongo, who misses her whanau and the sense of belonging she had back in her former home of Waiora. The play touches on themes including travelling and Pakeha expectations of Maori in the 1960s. “In the past, Maori weren’t in a position of authority but thankfully those times have changed,” Kouka said. “It is not negative but I see we are a mature enough country that we can ask those questions of each other.” Christchurch actor Kim Garrett plays one of the key roles. Garrett moved to the city 10 years ago to finish her Bachelor of Performing Arts degree at the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art. She will play the role of Wai Te Atatu (Sue), a mother who moves her family from Waiora on the East Cape to Waikuku Beach in Canterbury for a better life. “The family really wants to fit in. They choose not speak Te Reo Maori . . . they choose to adapt Pakeha ways because they figure it makes their lives easier,” Garrett said. As a Maori person, Garrett can relate to the play after feeling like she was “the only Maori in Christchurch” when she first moved to the city. “I wasn’t . . . but all I saw was a sea of white faces and people looking at me oddly,” she said. Kouka said Maori theatre is “booming” in New Zealand and he has been commissioned by The Court Theatre to write another Christchurch-based play. Waiora: Te ū kai pō – The Homeland will run from August 13-September 3. Bookings to go see Canterbury Repertory Theatre performances can now be made through their new website, www.repertory.nz The theatre’s administrator and business manager David Watkins said the decision to launch a new website coincides with the decision not to build a new theatre. Their previous Kilmore St theatre was closed following the September 2010 earthquake. Their productions are now held at the Elmwood Normal School’s auditorium in Merivale. Previously, tickets to the theatre’s productions were available through the Eventfinda website, meaning the theatre paid about nine per cent of its earnings to the booking company. The Canterbury Repertory Theatre has been open since 1928. They kept staging plays throughout World War 2 and immediately after the earthquakes. The theatre’s next show will be William Shakespeare’s King Lear. The production will be staged next month to mark 400 years since Shakespeare’s death.
