Hawkins Div 1 Club Rugby Trophy Final
New Brighton in with a chance
to make history
NeW BRIgHtoN have a chance to make
history this weekend. The seaside club has
never won both the round-robin cup and top
six trophy competitions in the same year.
The team claimed the Hawkins cup in the
final round-robin match on June 4 with a
stunning 32-30 win over Lincoln University.
Since then the message has been clear, they
want to do the double.
aaron Mccoy, the club’s most experienced
player spoke to the team before last weekend’s
semi-final, explaining that when the trophy
is being held aloft this Sunday nobody will
remember who won the cup earlier in the
season.
They couldn’t have a bigger opponent to try
and create history against. New Brighton and
Lincoln University have been the stand-out
performers in the metro competition over the
last few year years and have plenty of recent
history.
“They’ve got some of the best young talent
from around the country. It is a rivalry, there’s
no doubt about that because they’re the bench
mark,” said New Brighton coach Scott Pawson
Saturday’s 24-20 win over christchurch went
right down to the wire. New Brighton trailed
with less than ten minutes remaining, before
replacement centre alisi tupuailei charged
over the line to secure the teams spot in
Sunday’s grand final.
It was a much needed turn in form, New
Brighton came into the finals on the back of
consecutive defeats.
“We won our first three games in the top six,
we had sort of cemented our spot in the semifinals
and a bit of the edge went off. It was a bit
of complacency on our behalf and the other
teams played well to be fair,” says Pawson.
New Brighton have made the semi-finals of
the Hawkins trophy the previous two years.
2013 was the last time they lifted the trophy,
Scott Pawson’s first year coaching the team and
their first trophy win since 1984.
“We’ve got eight players that were involved
in that final in 2013. It’s nice having guy’s
that have won it and had that experience.
It definitely helps being able to rely on that
experience,” said Pawson.
No 8 aaron Mccoy has been a standout for
New Brighton in 2016. The experienced loose
forward leads the team with 12 tries and is
third in the Division one MVP - most valuable
player - standings.
“He’s been in the form of his career this
season. He’s had a bit of a glitch the last couple
of weeks, he went on a trip to Manila and has
taken a couple of weeks to recover from that. It
probably does coincide with the two losses we
had,” says Pawson.
Coaches Comment on the Opposition:
“They’ve got a very good young backline with Jordie Barrett,
Jack goodhue and Harrison groundwater they’re going to be
good Super Rugby players. They’re forward pack is underrated to
be honest, it’s a good young pack.”
New Brighton captain Billy Harmon who
missed a chunk of the first round of the
competition has also been impressive for the
seasiders this year. He was rewarded for his
