Emett restaurant for city
MICHELIN-STAR chef Josh
Emett has confirmed his
acclaimed restaurant Madam
Woo will open in Christchurch
early next year.
The MasterChef New Zealand
judge and his business partner
Fleur Caulton announced
on Monday the restaurant
would open in the $50
million McKenzie and Willis
development on High St in
February.
The Christchurch restaurant
will be the fifth location, with
eateries already in Auckland,
Dunedin, Hamilton and
Queenstown, where the original
Madam Woo opened in 2013.
“We are really excited to bring
Madam Woo to Christchurch,”
Ms Caulton said.
“Josh and I have been searching
for the right location in
Christchurch and believe that
we have finally found it, making
it the right time for us to have
a presence there. I think the

MAYOR LIANNE Dalziel has
offered to take social housing
off the Government.
At yesterday’s council
meeting she took a swipe at the
Government’s management of
social housing. She said it was
destroying families.
Ms Dalziel said the policy
was damaging to communities
like Aranui.
“The Ministry of Social
Development is destroying the
very essence of what makes
that community work,” she
said during a discussion on
the council’s new housing
policy.

In his affidavit, the former
employee said he was concerned
the substandard work which
he knew about could cause a
CTV building-type disaster. He
stated that, as an unqualified
welder, often unsupervised,
he was directed to take short
cuts which deviated from
the buildings’ specifications
and would compromise the
engineering.
Issues he raised included
welding K brace connection

while drilling through

Unsafe building investigation
‘Currently the priority of our
investigation is to ensure that
the buildings are safe.’
Ms Rae said the city
council’s inspection procedures
in regards to giving the green
light to building work were
robust and met industry
standards.
“Approved building consent
documentation will include a
building inspection schedule
that identifies the different types
of inspections which need to
be completed at various stages
of the build. This includes a
final inspection to be done by a
council inspector,” she said.
“A code compliance certificate
will not be issued without a
passed final inspection.”
In addition, the city
council also relied on third
party verification, such as
construction monitoring,
provided by the building’s
design engineer.

CHARGER CAUSES FIRE
An overheating cellphone charger
caused extensive smoke damage
throughout a technology business
in Middleton. A fire investigator
said the fire was contained to a
corner of the Salcom building on
Magdala Pl on September 19, but
smoke had done damage to stock.
Salcom is a technology company
which provides communication
products for the fire service and
a number of other emergency
services.

THree panels made up
of representatives of the
construction and design
industries will be set up to take
over from Stronger Christchurch
Infrastructure Rebuild Team.
The city council will set up the
design-build, construction and
design panels under its new
hybrid delivery model. While
there was no guarantee of work
being awarded to any panellist,
their involvement in the process
would allow for forward-planning
of work and resourcing that
improved the contract process.
ASSETS LIKELY FOR SALE
Stronger Christchurch
Infrastructure Rebuild Team is
looking at selling the small assets
it has acquired before it winds
up at the end of December. A
spokeswoman said items such
as computers, desks and office
equipment that had been used for
the five years SCIRT has operated
could be sold through auction.
INTEREST IN LAND
“Various parties” are interested
in developing a piece of central
city land originally earmarked for
a $30 million urban village. The
land on the corner of Madras and
Gloucester Sts was meant to be the
site of the Breathe Urban Village,
but it was scrapped last year.
“There has been interest expressed
in the residential demonstrator site
by various parties, but until such
time as a transaction is concluded,
we will not be commenting on
any discussions,” an Otakaro
spokesman said.
