You said: Elsabe Ackermann – Do I get a dedicated car park with my name on for $1000 in 2019? Our parking permits are just a licence to hunt for a park. Upside with that increase there might be loads of empty car parks to choose from. Keriana Thompson – That’s crazy! There’s no parking on our street . . . we’ve seen so many people get tickets for nothing! Makes me mad! If my driveway was longer I’d let people park in it. Tessa Burrows – So wrong – parking was free while I was there and so it should be, you are not guaranteed a park, it reduces street parking and the universities at the very least should provide parking to students paying to go to the school. Samantha Boon – They say we should catch the bus or bike . . . some of us live pretty far to bike and that is beside the point when you need a car to pick up kids from day care. Courtney Collins – Ridiculous as if $300 wasn’t enough to pay on top of our $700 student levy we pay and all the other thousands of dollars we pay for tuition!? Plus you can’t always get a park in certain car parks anyway! You cannot tell me it costs that much to have our cars on some concrete. ONE OF the big bits of political news this week was Labour’s announcement that we will fund a new light rail system in Auckland to help that city break out of its disastrous traffic gridlock. With National reflexively coming out against the idea, it reopened a long running debate about the role of public transport in modern cities. Here in Christchurch, as we often are, we’re a bit ahead of the curve on this one. In the last election, Labour identified the urgent need for light rail to the north and west of the city. For us, it’s simple – no great city in the world has ever been able to fix their traffic problems by just building more roads. As the old saying goes, if you build it, they will come, and what city after city has found is that if you build more roads, more people will use cars. In Christchurch, the challenge is even greater due to the earthquakes. The massive population upheaval caused by the quakes have meant our city is growing and changing in ways none of us could have predicted just a few short years ago. With huge swathes of our population now moving to the west and north, it’s vital that these new areas be supported by high quality transport infrastructure. The alternative is to end up like Auckland has been, with roads clogged with too much traffic. Congestion can be a major drag not just on quality of life but on our local economy as well, as workers waste hours of their lives stuck in traffic. And in an increasingly carbon constrained world, public transport has a vital role to play in helping us reduce our carbon emissions. That’s why light rail would be such a game changer for our city. It’ll help us unclog our roads, make it easier for people to get around, help us support new areas as our city grows, and help us play a role in the right against climate change. It’s the way of the future, it’s what modern, successful cities do. And I’m proud that Labour stands for modern, accessible public transport.
