The new seven-seat sport utility vehicle is stealth-like in its movement, hushed and almost devoid of sound; of course, there is some audible presence, but the CX-9 is certainly one of the quietest vehicles I’ve had the good fortune to drive. That doesn’t surprise me because Mazda is extending the boundaries of automotive design, all of its recent product has stood out for engineering prowess, that is backed up by the number of awards the company has received in recent years, and the CX-9 explores that even further. Not only is movement in the CX-9 whisper quiet, the engine has also been developed so that it works in the area where it is most effective and efficient. Forget about the 3-litre V6 engine which used to power the previousgeneration CX-9, the newcomer gets a turbocharged, 2.5-litre, four-cylinder unit and it has been engineered so that the torque pattern delivers useful power low in the rev band, the kind of power you need for everyday driving. The engine is still redlined at 6000rpm and that is easily accessible, especially so in sport mode, but there is no need to go there, the turbocharged boost arrives at only 2000rpm and is managed so that acceleration is ushered in forcefully from below that. Peak power is rated at a healthy 170kW and is developed at just 5000rpm, which is also low, thus minimising the need to explore the top end. Torque is the most important ingredient in any engine and in the CX-9’s case it pulls from absolutely nowhere. Other than the useful acceleration benefits (0-100km/h in 8.8sec), an 8.4-litre per 100km (34mpg) combined cycle fuel usage average is also claimed. That correlates well to the 9.2l/100km (31mpg) figure constantly showing in the test car, along with an amazing 5.7l/100km (49mpg) instantaneous figure at 100km/h, the engine very MAZDA CX-9: Engine designed to operate at low revs. relaxed at 1900rpm. These are extraordinary figures for a vehicle which weighs in excess of 1800kg, and are indicative of the development which has gone into the SkyActive range of engines which power almost all of Mazda’s current product. It’s not just the fact that the engine is so strong, nor the fact that it does its job without making a fuss that makes the CX-9 so special, this big family-friendly wagon lands at just $52,995 for the entry-level frontwheel-drive model. • Price – Mazda CX-9 GSX, $52,995 • Dimensions – Length, 5075mm; width, 1969mm; height, 1747mm • Configuration – Four-cylinder, frontwheel-drive, 2488cc, 170kW, 420Nm, sixspeed automatic. • Performance – 0-100km/h, 8.8sec • Fuel usage – 8.4l/100km An extra $2500 will buy you into a four-wheel-drive GSX while a range-topping Limited lands at $62,995. For me, I’d be more than happy with the entrylevel GSX, as tested, it is beautifully-built and comes with a substantial level of fitment, much of which is too comprehensive to detail. Major features for comfort and convenience include satellite navigation, full leather trim with heated front seats, electric front seat adjustment and, of course, it gets a fivestar Australasian New Car Assessment Program safety rating. Special mention must be made of the CX-9’s Bose audio. It is a stunner, the sound is rich and clear, and I guess a lot of what makes its clarity stand out is the absence of road noise. If you are a CX-9 buyer, ask for the Bose USB flash drive which has music especially formulated to enhance the audio’s characteristics. In terms of the driveline, power is directed through a six-speed automatic transmission, and it is a beauty in terms of shift refinement and seamless gearing. As mentioned, the engine wants to constantly work low down so that gear changes come early, but such is the clever way the power flow is managed there is no drop in performance. I barely used the sport protocols, opting instead for standard mode which still offers flighty engine operation if you wish to be aggressive with the accelerator. While many SUV buyers opt for four-wheel-drive, and in the CX-9’s case that is most affordable, the twowheel-drive model would suit me, it wants for nothing, ride comfort and handling aren’t compromised, I took the test car on a highway loop to Oxford. When it came time to tackle a few twists and turns, I found the big SUV to be capable and balanced in a corner. For a large and tall body the CX-9 feels more athletic than I was expecting. After a few months living in a student flat my daughter has shifted back home and I used the CX-9 to transport many of her belongings back. It’s that kind of versatility that makes big SUVs so popular. With the third row of seats folded flat the load area is cavernous (810-litres), while the seating configurations are versatile. It’s not often that I get so enthusiastic about SUVs, but the CX-9 is a class act. It is right up there in terms of luxury-like travel, and at a price where it is hugely competitive in a popular part of the market. I can see it easily being a market segment front-runner.
