China Southern Airlines and the Sanya Tourism Development Board will host a group of Gareth Williamson Christchurch travel agents on a tour of Guangzhou and Hainan Island. The travellers will experience China Southern’s Dreamliner (Boeing 787) and see how this route can be used as the first stop for those looking to experience Europe. The addition of China Southern’s direct route from Christchurch to Guangzhou in December last year was a sign of the airline’s commitment to Christchurch. The group of senior travel agents represent a wide range of travellers, from students to corporates, and will experience the first leg of what is one of the fastest routes from Christchurch to Europe. An hour’s flight from Guangzhou will see them on the ground in Sanya, Hainan Island, the southern-most city that boasts white-sand beaches, a tropical climate (annual average 25.8 deg C) and air quality that’s the highest of all China’s cities. The Residence and Heritage take luxury hotel awards THE GEORGE Hotel’s The Residence was named the top luxury hotel villa in Australasia at an awards ceremony in Qatar on Saturday. The Residence received the accolade at the Luxury Hotel Awards. It is a recently-renovated 1950s building adjacent to the main hotel. Its three bedrooms can be rented individually or together as a private villa. The Heritage Christchurch also received a regional award in the luxury historical hotel category. The hotel, housed in the 103-year-old Old Government Building in Cathedral Square, reopened in 2013 after suffering some damage in the 2011 earthquake. Gary Jarvis, group operations manager of Heritage and CityLife Hotels New Zealand, said the award was an “amazing achievement” and that guests responded well to the “elegant century-old building.” Queenstown also featured heavily, with three hotels in the area receiving regional awards.
