BLUE AND PINK HYDRANGEAS
Hydrangea flower colours can change
with different soil fertility. Many gardeners
have been mystified by this as they may
purchase a pink or red hydrangea in flower
from the garden centre and find a year
later, once it’s been in the garden a season,
that the flowers have changed colour to
a shade of mauve or blue. This is because
flower colour is affected by the soil’s pH
level.
Below clockwise – Mop head Mariko;
Hydrangea oakleaf Snowflake; Levana
is a H. paniculata hybrid; Pink Maiden
is another new one. With black stems
and rich green leaves, this one is
all about contrast; a wonderful cut
flower; Sumiko has plenty of street
appeal with its two-toned flowers.
Guide
Colour in the Shade
To some a shaded garden presents a number
of challenges, but for me I absolutely love the
variety of plants that are available for a semi to
fully shaded garden. The most intriguing thing
is the selection of colours available, not just
through flowers, but also with foliage colours
and patterns. So whether you are looking for
plants to dot under a deciduous tree, a shaded
side of the house, or even pots and planters, I
invite you to come and visit our experienced
and knowledgeable staff, the choices are
endless. In the meantime here are a few shade
lovers for the home gardener this spring.
Fuchsias – As a child I loved looking and
playing with the exotic, bright flowers from
these beautiful dancing ladies. Choose from
bush or basket varieties, which will brighten
up any dull space in late spring through to
autumn.
Heuchera – With so many amazing foliage
colours the hardest choice will be which
colours to plant. I love to see them dotted in a
garden border, incorporated into a woodland
garden scheme, or to add splashes of colour in
pots and planters in semi-shade.
Camellia and Rhodos – A common plant
which can’t be overlooked because they
are brilliant to add height and dimension.
Remember that if you have a narrow garden
the sasanqua camellias are the perfect choice
as they like to grow thin and high, and there
are many varieties of dwarf rhodos which are
simply delightful in a semi-shaded garden.
Hosta – A garden classic for a semi to fullyshaded
garden. Many people know and love
the hosta for the amazing foliage colours
which add a great contrast in the garden, but
what many don’t realise is that they have
beautiful flowers also.
Rhodohypoxis – From late spring until
autumn these brilliant wee beauties seem to
have more flower than plant. Dotted around
the garden border or to complement other
plants in pots, these stunning cuties are
packed full of flower power and love semishade.
Bedding Plants – The perfect choice for a
shaded or semi shaded hanging basket, pots
and planters or garden borders are impatiens,
mimulus, begonias, tuberous begonias,
pansies and cineraria.
There are so many choices for a shaded garden,
so come on in. We are more than happy to help
make your shade pop with colour.
