Livingstone in Trump protest
Great tasting food
UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT
• By Bridget Rutherford
CITY COUNCILLOR Glenn
Livingstone got a glimpse of
Donald Trump being sworn
in as the 45th President of the
United States.
He and his wife, Anthea,
are in the US after originally
buying the plane tickets in the
hope of seeing Hillary Clinton
being sworn in as president.
However, on Saturday (US
time), it was President Trump
they saw.
“I got a little glimpse of
Trump,” he said.
Cr Livingstone said the
following day, the pair took
part in the Women’s March
on Washington – a global
movement to support women’s
rights and broader equality.
They carried the New Zealand
flag, he said.
“It was quite an experience.
The march was like no other
we had ever participated in,
both in terms of the sheer
number of people and the
strength of feeling within it.”
Meanwhile, in Christchurch,
hundreds of people marched
from Victoria Square to Cathedral
Square on Saturday as
part of the global march.
“We carried the New Zealand
flag in solidarity with
those marching in Christchurch
and other cities,” Cr
Livingstone said.
Not only women took part;
there were people of all ages,
he said.
“Those taking part were
from mainstream America,
they were not ‘serial protesters’
as some commentators would
like to think.”
The couple left Christchurch
on January 15 and visited Dallas
to see Dealey Plaza, where
John F Kennedy was assassinated
in 1963, before heading
to New York and Washington
DC.
Cr Livingstone will miss
today’s council meeting as a
result of the trip.
