IDEA: A regional fuel tax for Canterbury could pay for the repair of its
earthquake damaged roads, city councillors say.
THE IDEA to implement a fuel
tax in a bid to fund the repair
of the region’s earthquake
damaged roads has been floated.
City councillor Aaron Keown
asked Mayor Lianne Dalziel
last week if she would consider
asking the Government if Canterbury
could have a regional
fuel tax.
It comes after Auckland
Mayor Phil Goff asked for a 10c
per litre fuel tax for Auckland
to plug the $4 million funding
gap it has for a list of transport
projects over the next decade.
However, Ms Dalziel said
she would be interested to see
what happened with Auckland’s
request before making any decisions
on asking the Government
to look at Canterbury.
Cr Keown said the tax could
pay for the repairs of Canterbury’s
earthquake damaged
roads, so it did not strain the
city council’s budget.
He said once the roads were
repaired, they could re-look at
whether the tax was still needed.
“You’d pay a bit extra for your
fuel to have really smooth roads
that work.”
Former city council infrastructure,
transport and
environment committee chairman
Phil Clearwater said he
mooted the idea twice last year
in informal discussions with
councillors.
“I think a regional fuel tax
does have the potential to bring
additional income for our
council.”
He did not know what amount
of tax would work at this stage,
Cr Clearwater said.
“I agree with the mayor, I think
we will need to wait and see how
Auckland gets this across the line
first then we would be likely to
pursue it if they do.”
Initially, Mr Key said no to
Mr Goff’s request for a fuel tax
$1m going into
new Sumner
car park
• By Annabelle Dick
NEARLY $1 million has been
spent on land to create a new car
park in Sumner.
The city council spent $900,000
on buying two properties on
Nayland St to create a car park for
Matuku Takotako: Sumner Centre,
which is currently under construction.
The properties, 31 and 33 Nayland
St, cost one-tenth of the $10
million budget for the centre, on
the corner of Wakefield Ave and
Nayland St.
City council property consultancy
manager Angus Smith said it
bought the two properties to support
its application when applying
for the centre’s resource consent.
The centre includes a new
community centre, library and
museum and is expected to be
completed in April.
The properties will provide
between 20 and 30 car parks, depending
on final design, Mr Smith
said.
Since the Sumner Village Master
Plan was brought in to redevelop
the area, the loss of car parking has
been a contentious issue within the
community.
