The boy who could barely recognise the first letter of his name when I met him was now a builder and thriving. This is why I love my job. Teacher aides and other school support staff are an essential and valuable part of our education otoring system. We work behind the scenes or with children who have varying learning needs and disabilities. Our efforts allow children to experience success. asty Bites oney We are highly-valued by our school colleagues and the children and their parents. But not, it seems, by the Government. Most people would be shocked to realise that many support staff earn hardly more than the minimum wage, even after years of experience, and we have little job security from year to year – sometimes even from term to term. Sometimes the child with Government funding we’ve been teaching moves on and we lose hours of work. Other times, the school budget is tightened and those who have been paid out of the school operations grant lose Ready to get your land use consent to farm for Selwyn? hours or even their jobs. This year, the situation has worsened. School budgets were frozen in last year’s budget and, as our union NZEI Te Riu Roa negotiates a new collective agreement with the Ministry of Education, the problem has become clear. We deserve a pay rise, but if the ministry agrees to a rise, schools can’t afford to pay us any more so hours and jobs will be lost, and students will miss out. We’re stuck unless the Government agrees to increase funding to schools. Starting last week until March 31, NZEI is running about 200 meetings across the country for support staff to discuss the situation. We’re standing firm – we deserve a two per cent pay rise and the Government needs to pay for it, because our schools certainly can’t. We hope that you will stand with us too. Holly Traxler-Puddle, of Avonhead, reacts to an article in the Selwyn Times (March 14) about ECan investigating measures to protect the Selwyn River. In the article, Selwyn Waihora Zone Committee chairman Allen Lim said about 15-20 per cent of the river’s low flows could be attributed to irrigation What a bunch of hooey! The Selwyn River is dead because of the irrigation in the area – certainly not the pittance of 15-20 per cent as stated by Mr Allen Lim. Where is he getting his information from? If you are from this area, you have seen the decline in the river water since the dairy industry got well paid from the price of milk solids. This river needs to be saved now, not by 2040 – it will be long gone by then. ECan, do your work properly or move on from the next election and get someone in there with the guts to turn the sprinklers off and save our rivers. Selwyn Waihora Zone Committee chairman Allen Lim responds: The 15-20 per cent figure I mentioned, referring to the relative impact of irrigation compared with other factors, comes from the scientific assessment made for the Selwyn Waihora water plan which became operative last year. It represents the average reduction in Waihora spring-fed streams (not just Selwyn) caused by cumulative irrigation takes. Climate played a big part in the current situation. There are examples of other rivers and lakes that have gone dry or are at record lows but are not subject to irrigation takes, such as Lake Lyndon in Porters Pass. To deny that the lack of rainfall for the last three winters has anything to do with the river going dry, and Lake Lyndon at record lows, is like saying CO2 is not a greenhouse gas and there is no climate change. Interestingly enough, at the time of writing this, the Selwyn River at Coes Ford is flowing again at around 150 l/s after the 50-plus millimetres of rain received in the weekend. We need to consider all factors and not close our mind to any. To this end, in our last meeting, the Selwyn Waihora Zone Committee resolved to put the near river augmentation project for the Selwyn River up for funding. We want to have the Selwyn swimmable long before 2040. I would like to encourage anyone with a bit of energy to channel it and help us manage the water. SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www. .kiwi Tuesday March 21 2017 5 News Police seek owners of recovered property • By Tom Doudney POLICE ARE looking for the owners of more than 30 items including cellphones, tools, silverware and a snowboard, after coming across an “Aladdin’s Cave” of stolen property near Lincoln. The unexpected haul was found when Senior Constable Jim Manning visited a Tancreds Rd property last month with a warrant to arrest a Lincoln woman, 27, for failing to appear in court. The woman, who had been charged with shop lifting, did not live at the address but was known to frequent it. On searching the address, Senior Constable Manning uncovered several marijuana plants, equipment for smoking methamphetamine, three stolen vehicles, a .22 rifle and amunition and numerous stolen items, several of which he realised were connected with two reported burglaries. “It was like an Aladdin’s cave,” he said. “It took about 10 police three hours to search the house and recover everything we got.” The woman who police had been seeking was not found at the property but police caught up with her later and she has since appeared in court. Senior Constable Manning said she and two men in their 30s who lived at the property were facing a variety of charges related to burglary, theft of the vehicles and drugs.
