SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www. .kiwi Tuesday May 23 2017 7 News Coming Soon! Children focus of skate park • By Georgia O’Connor-Harding LACK OF space means a skate park in Lincoln will be aimed at young teenagers and children. Designs for the new skate park in Lincoln have been released showing it will predominantly cater for children and amateur skaters. The skate park Grant Miller Malcolm Lyall will be sited next to the children’s playground where the barbecue area is at the Lincoln Event Centre. The barbecue area will be re-sited close by. Selwyn district councillor Grant Miller said the size of the skate park came down to what space is available in the area. “Finding a site within Lincoln has been very challenging . . . there has always been a reason of why not from nearby residents,” he said. But a larger skate park similar to the Prebbleton Community Park has not been ruled out in the future. Deputy Mayor Malcolm Lyall said, as Lincoln develops with new subdivisions, a site might be found. “Eventually, I would like to see that in Lincoln, but it is a matter of having it in the right space,” he said. In the district council’s 2015-2025 Long Term Plan, it is projected Lincoln will reach a population of 9442 by 2025. Consultation on the designs were held last week outside the event centre. The skate park is planned to be about 260m 2 . District council community projects and facilities manager Cameron Warr said it will cater to all age groups from learner to medium level ability skaters, scooter and BMX riders. A big bowl, a shallow bowl, skatable seats, new plants and lighting is in the initial plans. The existing seating and barbecue shelter will be relocated to make way for the skate park and a new drinking fountain will be added. The skate park was initially planned to be located in an area behind the Lincoln Rugby Club. But there was concern about vandalism. SET PLAN: The new location for the Lincoln Skate Park will require the existing seating and barbecue shelter near the Lincoln Event Centre to be removed. The Men’s Shed of Lincoln Society may now utilise the space by the rugby club for a new facility. The skate park will be close to the Lincoln Bowling Club. Club member Isabel Murray said they were under the impression it was for under- 10-year-olds. To view the plan, go to the district council’s Facebook page.
