in district

POLICE OFFICERS will not be 

based in the district around the 

clock in the foreseeable future. 

Police chiefs said yesterday that 

the Rolleston station does not 

have a set date for when it will go 

24/7. 

Rolleston was one of four stations 

across the country earmarked to be 

staffed 24/7 in 2017/18 as part of the 

$388 million investment in police 

announced by Prime Minister Bill 

English in February. 

Canterbury rural area commander 

Inspector Peter Cooper said the 

station will need to have more staff 

before it can. So far four new staff 

have been confirmed for Rolleston 

in October. 

A further six officers are due 

next year, however, those are still 

unconfirmed Inspector Cooper 

said. 

A senior sergeant position will be 

created in Rolleston, giving the area 

its “own voice,” he said. 

“There has been a considerable 

increase in population so it is time 

it had its own senior sergeant,” 

Inspector Cooper said.

Pressure goes on 

West Melton wells

DRY WINTER weather is continuing 

to put pressure on West Melton’s 

water wells. 

The Concerned Well-Owners 

Group West Melton, made up of 

about 20 residents, met at the township’s 

community centre last week 

to address concerns on what can be 

done to stop wells from drying up in 

the township. 

About 50 residents have raised concerns 

with the group previously with 

about 10 per cent having a dry well. 

Climate rather than surrounding 

irrigation has been identified by 

Environment Canterbury as having 

the largest impact on the township’s 

water supply. 

In August, it was reported parts of 

Canterbury including West Melton 

were in the worst drought since the 

1980s with 86 per cent of water bores 

across the region affected. 

While West Melton’s groundwater 

levels are no longer at record lows, 

ECan estimates they are still sit at a 

low level. 

The group’s chairman Peter 

Thomson said while he accepted the 

weather had the largest impact, it was 

still difficult to see so many irrigators 

in the area. 

An affected resident himself, Mr 

Thomson has been carting water 

from a 11,000 litre holding tank 

situated in Yaldhurst for the past five 

months after his West Melton property 

well went dry. 

He is likely to be faced with paying 

about $30,000 or more depending on 

how much deeper his well needs to be 

drilled. 

“The main thing is not everyone 

was aware of the problem . . . we 

wanted to know how it happened, 

why it happened and what we could 

do about it,” he said. 

Another meeting was held with residents, 

ECan and the district council 

on June 19. 

ECan provided information on 

climate-induced variations in ground 

levels while the district council 

provided an overview of the water 

supply. 

ECan’s groundwater science manager 

Carl Hanson said the township 

has not been getting the rainfall 

needed.

SHED FIRE 

An electrical fault is thought 

to have caused a shed fire at a 

private property at Springfield 

last Saturday at about 1am. 

Fire services from Sheffield, 

Springfield and Darfied attended 

the incident on King St. 

Springfield chief fire officer 

Grant Williams said the shed was 

located close to another house and 

hedge but it did not spread. 

WALKWAY CLOSED 

The Glentunnel Millennium 

Walkway has been closed over the 

winter. The walk is known for its 

old tunnel and mining machinery. 

Glentunnel Township Committee 

chairman Reg Anderson said the 

track is closed over the winter for 

cleaning. “It is pretty sloshy up 

there at the moment . . . there is 

a creek that runs through it that 

floods all over the place, it is really 

quite messy,” he said. The track is 

expected to reopen in September.

has put up a tow away sign. 

Who is right? 

You said: 

Pamela Neil – No one does 

clamping any more. Cafe can 

ask the council for a 15min 

area in front or their shop. I did 

that with a shop I owned and it 

worked well. 

Peter Cooper – It is illegal 

to wheel clamp a car. They try to 

use the towing laws but nowhere 

in that law does it say someone 

can clamp your car. You can 

have the wheel clampers arrested 

for tampering with your motor 

vehicle and you can legally cut 

off the clamp. 

Lynette Evans – I believe 

there should be better parking 

in Lincoln, and more long-term 

parking made available. It is 

all well and good planning on 

taking parking away for cycle 

lanes, but it makes it hard for 

local businesses to have close 

access for those who need it, 

for example disabled parking, 

outside the restaurant. Don’t pick 

on the business, think how you 

would feel if it was your business 

and people complained that they 

could not get parks close by. T 

Lincoln needs a decent parking 

precinct for retail shoppers. 

More and more locals are parking 

outside businesses and residential 

addresses because there is 

not enough parking in Lincoln. 

Will Hunter – If it’s a public 

road, it’s public property and 

subject to the district council, 

not these upstarts. You want 

dedicated parking for your 

customers? Pay $1000 a year in 

easement fees.

parking spaces are on the road 

and have been there for many, 

many years. Used by whoever 

needs them. Not creating a lot of 

goodwill for a new business to be 

mixed up in this kind of argument. 

The district council needs 

to be a bit more decisive I think. 

Either those parks belong to the 

bar or they don’t. No room for a 

grey area. 

Jill Reesby – If the parks 

are on the road, then surely that 

is district council/public land, 

therefore the P120 is valid. My 

opinion is that clamping and tow 

signage would only be legal if 

on private land for example offstreet 

shop client only parking?

on no one has a right to do that, I 

only know I would only pay one 

office and that’s the local government 

enforcement.

council is right. If it says P120, 

there is zero basis for clamping

Zealand discussion paper 

released July 2016 entitled The 

2050 challenge: future proofing 

our communities begins its 

executive summary with the 

sentence – “it is a truism but 

communities that fail to adapt to 

change die.” 

While the sentiment maybe 

true, it is not true in every case 

and it fails to recognise that all 

too often community decline is 

by “design” underpinned by a 

philosophy that focuses on economic 

outcomes in preference to 

social goods. 

While it is true that communities 

that fail to adapt may die it 

is also true that design choices 

have a significant impact on the 

outcome. 

In Southbridge we don’t have 

an Izone to inject new business 

into the area and draw in new 

residents. 

Our utility infrastructure 

capacity – for an example, sewerage 

is constrained. 

By design, significant local 

body assets are not located in 

Southbridge. 

By design, there is no abundance 

of residential zoned land 

for development. 

Yet, Southbridge as a small 

rural community is holding its 

own almost in spite of the “design” 

constraints.

900, Southbridge is blessed with 

an attractive rural township 

supported by two moderatelysized 

cornerstone businesses 

and a rural catchment which 

provides sufficient critical mass 

to support the local services 

sector including a petrol station, 

café, dairy, pub, and engineering

Who’s a good boy then?

OSCAR THE schnauzer has 

been such a well-behaved boy, he 

has been rewarded with a special 

discount on his registration fees. 

Selwyn has its own version of 

the SuperGold Card – but for its 

“senior citizen” dogs. 

Oscar’s owner Ray Abernethy, 

of Rolleston, was pleasantly 

surprised when he learnt his 

15-year-old dog would get a free 

registration for the year, only 

having to pay a $10 administration 

fee. Dog registrations 

normally cost $30 with a $10 

administration fee. 

To put the icing on the cake, 

Oscar even gets a “gold tag member” 

sticker on his registration in 

recognition. 

The initiative was brought in 

by the district council three years 

ago by its senior animal control 

officer Steve Clarke. 

It is believed to be the only 

council in New Zealand that 

does free registrations for wellbehaved 

senior dogs. 

“They deserved to be recognised 

and this is our way of 

recognising our old dogs in the 

district,” Mr Clarke said. 

The criteria in receiving the 

discount requires dogs to be at 

least 14-years-old, registered in 

the district for at the last 10 years 

and cannot have had a infringement 

for non-registration or had 

to pay a penalty fee. 

“The district council doesn’t 

get many bouquets . . . I just 

think it is a great initiative,” Mr 

Abernethy said. 

Mr Clarke said there are 250 in 

the district identified as qualifying 

for free registration for next 

year. 

He has a 10-year-old border 

collie called Daisy himself, who 

used to be a search and rescue 

dog and travels around with 

SPECIAL RECOGNITION: 

As well as getting a free 

registration, well-behaved 

dogs over the age of 14 get a 

“gold tag member” sticker on 

their forms. 

Mr Clarke as part of the district 

council’s DogSmart education 

safety programme for schools. 

While Oscar may not be as active 

as he used to be, you will still 

find Mr Abernethy out taking 

his a dog for a walk each night. 

Back in his heyday, while Oscar 

may not have caused any trouble 

for the district council, his love 

for digging was occasionally a bit 

of trouble for his owners. 

“When we bought our first 

house in Hornby, he dug a hole 

in the wall trying to get out to 

the lounge,” Mr Abernethy said. 

Another night, when Oscar 

was locked in the garage he dug a 

hole in the carpet through to the 

concrete floor.

to the Selwyn District Council. 

Currently, a senior sergeant is 

based in Hornby and oversees 

the Selwyn District. 

Police stats for the year to 

date in the Selwyn District show 

there have been 10 aggravated 

robberies, 45 illegal use of a motor 

vehicle, 164 unlawful entry 

with intent to burgle, 59 thefts, 

not including motor vehicles 

and 45 thefts of motor vehicles. 

In 2016 there were two aggravated 

robberies, 91 illegal use 

of a motor vehicle, 394 unlawful 

entry with intent to burgle, 126 

thefts not including vehicles and 

three thefts of motor vehicles.

HISTORY: Tania Roxborogh’s novel Bastion 

Point: 507 days on Takaparawhā has been 

shortlisted for the Esther Glen award.

LINCOLN HIGH School 

english teacher and author 

Tania Roxborogh describes 

herself as a “justice person.” 

It was only fitting that 

she would write a novel 

about what happened on 

Takaparawhā in the 1970s, 

her book is titled Bastion 

Point: 507 Days on 

Takaparawhā. 

It took two years for Mrs 

Roxborogh to research and 

finish the novel. 

“There’s not one book on 

the protests,” she said. 

All of the research was 

done through old newspaper 

stories, prime minister at 

the time Rob Muldoon’s 

biography, and letters. It was 

difficult. 

“They all had a bias,” she 

said. 

But the hard work paid off. 

Now the novel has been 

shortlisted for the 2017 New 

Zealand Awards for Children 

and Young Adults in the 

Junior Fiction category (the 

Esther Glen Award). 

“I cried when I found out,” 

Mrs Roxborogh said. “It’s a 

huge story.”

My New Zealand 

Story which is a series of 

vividly imagined accounts of 

real life events, seen through 

the eyes of fictitious child 

diarists. 

“Being an author one of 

the roles is to tell life through 

telling stories,” Mrs Roxborogh 

said. 

Mrs Roxborogh graduated 

from Otago University in 

2015 with a focus on Māori 

studies. One of her lectures 

was on the occupation of 

Bastion Point. 

Memories started resurfacing 

about her experiences 

during the time. 

Mrs Roxborogh remembered 

a time when she was 

nine and she was living in 

Titoki. She woke up one 

morning to find people sleeping 

on her couch. They were 

people who wanted to join 

the land march. 

Mrs Roxborogh’s family 

took them in the car to 

Whangarei. 

The novel is from the 

viewpoint of Erica Tito as her 

family joins the occupation. 

Mrs Roxborogh describes 

Erica as a quiet character. 

“It was very hard to find her 

voice.” 

It wasn’t until the day 

Mrs Roxborogh visited 

Takaparawhā that she really 

found Erica. 

After walking around the 

site, a sad experience for the 

author, Mrs Roxborogh got 

back into her car and Erica 

came to her saying: “Now 

you have your story.” 

On January 5, 1977, Ngāti 

Whātua protesters, under the 

banner of the Ōrākei Māori 

Action Committee, began 

occupation of their former 

lands at Takaparawhā (Bastion 

Point) in Okahu Bay, 

Auckland. 

Led by Joe Hawke, the 

occupation protested against 

the Crown’s decision to build 

on and sell land that had 

been confiscated. 

On May 25, 1978, police 

and army personnel removed 

222 protesters from 

Takaparawhā ending the 

507-day occupation.

The competition was part

Mayor Sam Broughton made 

an appearance to chat to the 

students about the process of 

getting the recipes together and 

getting the book printed. 

Mr Broughton thought the 

night was “really good” and has

Jonty was just 10-weeksold 

when his parents 

had to watch him being 

prepared for surgery for 

the first time. 

That was five years ago, 

and Sam and Maree Smolenski 

have since become 

very familiar with the 

hospital. 

For the first 96 days of 

his life, Jonty was kept in 

neonatal intensive care. 

He had problems seeing, 

hearing and eating, and 

seemed to be hit far harder 

by colds and flus than 

other children. 

Yet the doctors could 

not understand what was 

causing Jonty’s problems 

– and it was three years

That came almost by 

chance, she said. 

Jonty has trichothiodystrophy 

– a recessive 

genetic disorder so rare 

he is the only person in 

New Zealand currently 

diagnosed with it. 

But a geneticist at 

Christchurch Hospital 

had seen cases before, and 

recognised the symptoms, 

including Jonty’s distinctive 

brittle hair, she said. 

“He has never ever had a 

hair cut. There is a guy on 

Home Alone who gets his 

hair singed, and he’s left 

with just knobbles around 

his head. When Jonty was 

a wee baby in neonatal 

care he looked like that. 

His first lot of hair just 

rubbed right off and knobbled 

up around his head,” 

she said. 

Although they finally 

knew the cause of their 

son’s problems, it came 

with bad news – it 

was untreatable, and 

many children with the 

condition died young, she 

said. 

“It was quite a shock. 

We don’t know how long 

we’ll have with Jonty. 

Every winter there’s a risk 

he might get an illness he 

doesn’t recover from,” she 

said.

7, and Ruby, 3, made it 

harder, she said.

racing trainer and driver, and 

comes from a racing family – his 

grandfather was driving 

and training legend Jack 

Smolenski. 

The racing community rallied 

last year to raise more than 

$75,000 for the family, with even 

world driving champion Dexter 

Dunn wearing special racing 

colours in Jonty’s honour as a 

fundraiser. 

That meant the whole family 

could go to international conferences 

in the United States last 

year and again this year to meet 

with specialists and with other 

people who have the condition, 

Mrs Smolenski said. 

This year, she said the family 

were approached by Addington 

Raceway, asking if the family 

needed more help. 

But instead, they wanted to do 

something to give back, she said. 

The family have planned a 

fundraising race night and dinner 

on July 21, raising money for 

some of the local organisations 

that have helped them. 

She said many were locally run 

and struggled with funding, but

made life a lot easier for families 

like hers. 

“It’s not an easy road, but 

it’s made easier by the support

especially true when it’s a special 

child.”

Sparks Memorial Trophy for 

the first time in nine years after 

a tough 18-16 win over rivals

Waihora coach Joff Mooar 

described the last 20min of the 

game as a real “nail-biter,” with 

the lead changing a number of 

times. 

Trailing 15-16 with five 

minutes to play Waihora were 

awarded a penalty, setting up 

first-five Harry Kirk to slot the 

game-winning kick. 

“It never seems to matter where 

you are on the table in these 

games between Waihora and 

Lincoln, they always go down to

West Melton rower ready 

for international event

THE HARD yards are being put in 

by West Melton’s Ben Taylor and his 

schoolmate Thomas Russel as they 

prepare for the world junior rowing 

championships. 

Taylor and Russel have been selected for 

the New Zealand junior men’s coxless four to 

compete in Trakai, Lithuania, next month. 

Both have been training at the New Zealand 

Rowing Gallagher High-Performance 

Centre at Lake Karapiro. 

They were a part of the winning Maadi 

Cup team which not only brought back the 

top prize for the first time in the college’s 

history, but the Springbok Shield as well. 

Both said they are incredibly proud to be 

able to represent their country in a sport 

they love.

KidsFest 

kicks off! 

Get a winter work out! 

Term 3 classes for Lincoln Event Centre and Rolleston Community 

Centre begin in the last week in July. Both centres run a fantastic 

range of fun social activities to keep all ages fit in the winter 

months. 

Lincoln Event Centre offers Baby Gym, Mini Gym and Little Feet 

Dancers for pre-schoolers and toddlers; Hoops Basketball with 

Canterbury Basketball and Skate to Have Fun for school-aged 

children; Blast Core, Low Impact for Seniors, Pilates, Pump for 

Beginners, Spin, and Tai Chi fitness classes for adults. 

A new BoxFit class has been introduced at Rolleston Community 

Centre on Wednesday evenings, and an extra Thursday night Spin 

class added. Other adult classes include Mature and Motivated and 

Move it to Music. Fitness Max classes include Body Tone, Circuit, 

Morning Movement Yoga, Pump for Beginners, Pump Fitness, 

Social Table Tennis, Step Pump Combo, Stretch and Release, Tai 

Chi, Yoga Flow, and Zumba. Baby Gym and Mini Gym will keep tots 

entertained, while older children enjoy Basketball and Skate to be Fit.

KidsFest has kicked off with a number of exciting events across the Selwyn district providing fun 

for families during the school holidays. 

Children have enjoyed Rogaine Rampage at the Rolleston Reserve, the Selwyn District Libraries 

Explore: Write! class for budding writers, and the first of the Selwyn Aquatic Centre’s Winter Pool 

Fest events, which are ongoing daily from 1–3pm during this first week of the holidays. 

While many events require booking, Moviemania and Discomania do not, so make sure you add 

these to your holiday agenda. Discomania is on Thursday from 6–7.30pm at Lincoln Event Centre. 

Another session is on next Thursday at the same time at The Station (Leeston New Life Centre). 

Tickets at the door are $2 per child (caregivers free). 

‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’ is the Moviemania screening this Sunday from 6–7.30pm at 

Lincoln Event Centre, while ‘A Bug’s Life’ will play at the Rolleston Community Centre next Friday 

from 6–7.30pm. Tickets are $2 per person for children and caregivers. 

KidsMarket this Friday is sure to be a crowd favourite. With all stalls fully booked, there will be 

plenty on offer to browse through. Get along to Lincoln Event Centre between 10am–12pm to 

grab a bargain and support these young entrepreneurs.

Dunsandel Community Centre Grand Opening 

The Dunsandel Community Committee is hosting a Grand Opening event celebrating the completion of 

the Dunsandel Community Centre on Friday 4 August, from 4pm. The event is open to all locals. 

A community celebration will follow the opening formalities, which will be carried out by the Hon Amy 

Adams, MP for Selwyn. 

The new facility replaces the original Dunsandel Community Hall, which was located in the township 

and demolished after being damaged beyond repair in the 2010/2011 earthquakes. The local 

community has fundraised $350,000, including generous contributions from Rata Foundation and The 

New Zealand Lottery Grants Board. 

The new Community Centre, located at 1456 Tramway Road, is a multi-purpose facility which will be 

used by sporting and community groups, businesses, and for events.

Say YES to emergency services 

Young people aged 16–19 can apply to join a Youth in Emergency 

Services (YES) camp happening from Monday 2–Friday 6 October 

at Glentui Meadows near Oxford. The camp is a combined initiative 

by the Waimakariri, Hurunui and Selwyn District Councils. 

Emergency services including Fire and Emergency New Zealand 

(FENZ), Red Cross, NZ Police, Coastguard, St John and New 

Zealand Land Search and Rescue will attend the camp. Camp 

participants will have the chance to find out more about their work, 

learn new skills through hands on activities, and meet new friends. 

Following the camp, participants will spend three months 

volunteering for a few hours per week with the emergency service 

of their choice. Applications for the camp close on 20 August – see

Selwyn is looking for 10 enthusiastic participants to join the camp. 

“Last year’s camp was great, I got to know everyone there, they 

became like a second family,” says Abi Smith of Lincoln. “I enjoyed 

taking part in the overnight camp and learnt about a lot of different 

things such as first aid and all the different emergency services and 

what they do.” 

On the roads this week 

The intersection of Hoskyns Road and Sandy Knolls Road is being 

upgraded and a change of priority will occur in July so that traffic 

approaching from Sandy Knolls Road will need to stop. Traffic delays 

may occur and detours may operate while the upgrade occurs. 

Construction of a right turn bay is continuing at the intersection of 

Dynes Road and Springston Rolleston Road, with traffic controls in 

place at this location. 

Sewer line installation work is continuing on Shands Road and 

Selwyn Road – traffic delays may occur due to this work. 

Culvert work is planned on Algidus Road. Unsealed road 

maintenance will occur on Coleridge Intake Road. Drainage and 

berm work is being done on Leeston Dunsandel Road in Dunsandel. 

Traffic controls will be operating at all sites. Footpath construction 

will be occurring on Liffey Springs walkway. 

Christchurch Southern Motorway Extension – NZTA 

From Thursday 6 July, there is no access to Main South Road from 

Weedons Road for up to six weeks while utility work is carried out. 

A one-way system will be in place. Please follow detour signage.

United at Kendall Park on 

Saturday. 

Holding a 2-1 lead with 

five minutes to play, Selwyn 

could only watch in awe

drilled a rocket from 45m 

out, catching goalkeeper

More than one way to grow strawberries 

EDIBLE GARDENS have 

never been more popular 

and one of the easiest of 

fruits to cultivate is the 

strawberry. 

Because of their compact 

habit, strawberries can be 

grown in hanging baskets, 

containers or the aptlynamed 

strawberry pots, as 

well as the usual raised-up 

garden beds. 

They can begin cropping 

in a matter of weeks and 

will go on producing for 

much of the year, especially 

in warmer areas. 

•Strawberries in the 

garden – Choose a sunny 

position 

that hasn’t grown strawberries 

for a number of years and 

dig in some organic compost. 

Plant strawberry runners 

or seedlings into raised-up 

mounds, and apply a layer 

of mulch. It important it is 

to mulch the plants, both 

to retain moisture and 

to keep the fruit cleanly 

above the soil. Pea straw or 

lucerne hay make a good a 

mulch. 

Remove runners, unless 

you want to use them to 

propagate some new plants 

(which should be done 

every three years or so). 

•Strawberries in pots 

– Start by choosing a suitable 

container. Fill with a 

top quality potting

Unusual vegetables are

growing season. 

Cool season vegetables: 

Grow best when temperatures 

are between 10-20 

deg C or even lower. They 

include broad beans, 

broccoli, brussels sprouts, 

cauliflower, onions, peas, 

spinach and turnips. 

Intermediate season 

vegetables: These are best 

between temperatures of 

15-25 deg C. They include 

beetroot, carrot, parsnip, 

celery, leek, lettuce, radish 

and silver beet. 

Warm season vegetables: 

Are grown best when 

temperatures are above 

20 deg C. They include 

beans, capsicum, eggplant, 

potato, sweet corn, sweet 

mix and plant the strawberries. 

Water in well. 

Feed occasionally with 

plant food and watch out 

for snails and slugs. 

•Strawberries in 

hanging baskets – 

This is a fun way to grow 

strawberries, but the main 

challenge with growing any 

plant in a hanging basket is 

that it’s much more vulnerable 

to drying out. 

Line moss baskets with 

plastic sheet and poke holes 

for drainage. Fill with a 

hanging basket mix which 

contains added soil wetters 

and water-storing crystals.

decorative dangling 

from a basket (right). 

Save money on food 

potato, tomato and cucurbits 

(including cucumbers, 

zucchini and pumpkins). 

Vegetable cultivation 

Position – Vegetables 

must have sun. Try to 

select a growing area that 

is sunny for most of the 

day, is sheltered, and is 

close to a source of water. 

Soil is not absolutely 

necessary. Vegetables can 

also be grown in potting 

mix or in a hydroponic 

set up, but the most common 

medium is still good 

garden soil. Soil must have 

good drainage and a good

I know people are busy planting roses now, but am I meant 

to be pruning my existing ones now as well? 

You sure are! Now is a great time to prune - and plant – roses 

(all but spring only blooming roses such as old fashioned). 

The plant will respond well to a good prune as it allows new 

growth, lets in more sun and air, and ultimately creates a 

healthier plant that will produce more blooms. You don’t have 

to be an expert to be able to do this job, just remember these few 

things and you can’t go too wrong: 

Prune on a clear fine day. Rain can promote the spread of 

diseases into new cuts. 

Make sure your secateurs or loppers are sharp.You will 

want a nice clean cut. Where possible, clean these between 

plants. This will help to stop any disease spreading from 

plant to plant. 

Remove up to a third of the plant, starting with the outer over-hanging branches and working your way in, removing 

any dead or diseases branches along the way. Trim to the shape you want, the plant is pretty forgiving and will 

bounce back from a good cut. Bush roses you can reduce by 50%. Note: you may want to wear some gardening 

gloves for this part! 

After you’ve removed all the clippings, add a layer of mulch to the area. Use some Organic Compost to boost up the 

soil, or if you prefer, add a layer of bark to the top.

S&T Plastics is in an exciting position with major projects in place for 2017 and 

plenty more opportunities out there for us to explore. We need skilled pipe 

extrusion technicians that can be relied on for their expertise during a shift. 

We have both day and night shift positions as Senior Extrusion Line Operators 

available. You will work on a 4 day on, 2 day off roster for 12 hours shifts. This is full 

time permanent work. The nightshift will come with a shift allowance also. 

We need people that can trouble shoot and analyse or know what to do when 

things go wrong, that can take the lead when we have production change overs, 

shut downs and start-ups and also be capable of organising and leading staff when 

required. 

You need to have: 

• At least 4 years’ experience in pipe extrusion – preferably in large bore poly pipe 

• Have proven analytical problem solving skills 

• Or practical engineering or mechanical background work experience 

• Current entitlement to work in New Zealand

Weatherproofing tips for your 

house design 

Insulation and double glazed windows are compulsory 

in new homes making them infinitely superior to their 

older counterparts for warmth yet more can be done to 

weatherproof a new home. 

Underfloor insulation 

Foam insulated expanded polystyrene 

panels under the concrete slab act as an 

insulating barrier, stopping cold coming 

through from under the house. 

Garages 

Insulating the garage and its door will cut 

down on a steady stream of cold air sneaking 

into the house. An insulated garage door 

can lift the temperature substantially even 

when the garage itself is not heated, making 

it a more pleasant place to spend time. Any 

home appliances kept in the garage will use 

less electricity as they will not have to work 

as hard and your car battery may last longer. 

Roof design 

Roof designs vary. The simplest way to 

achieve a weather tight house is to have a 

simple roof design with an overhanging 

surfeit. Architectural flat roofs will work 

though more care is needed to achieve 

weather tightness especially where there are 

hidden or back roof gutters. Having a roof 

with no overhang also requires more care 

with the design due to its complexity and 

potential for problems. Regular maintenance 

to clean out leaves and debris that gets 

caught in the roof will be advantageous in 

both cases. 

Porticos 

Taking the roof out beyond the house 

is ideal for providing a sheltered area for 

spending time outdoors when the weather is 

inclement. 

Snow straps or guttering protection 

Wherever snow is a likely part of winter, 

installation of snow straps is a good idea. 

These prevent damage to guttering from 

the weight of snow as it slides off the roof. 

Alternatively, an expanded steel mesh 

product such as Gutter Guard could 

be fitted. This has the added benefit of 

preventing spouting blockages from leaf and 

other debris. 

Capitalise on the sun 

Maximise the sun’s free energy with plenty 

of windows, especially on the north side of 

the house. 

Outdoor areas 

When choosing a house design, consider 

how it will sit on the section and whether it 

offers potential to catch sun inside the home 

and for sunny sheltered outdoor areas away 

from prevailing winds. 

Windows and doors 

Upgrade on the minimum standard 

for double glazing with thermally broken 

joinery and low-emissivity argon gas filled 

windows and doors, increasing insulation 

effectiveness. 

Energy efficient heating 

Explore heating options, selecting what 

will work best given the size of home and 

family needs. Heat pumps are an efficient 

form of heating with two cassette and energy 

saving options available while heat transfer 

systems are great if there is a log burner. 

Extending the roof beyond the house creates a sheltered area.

Are two real estate agencies 

better than one when it 

comes to selling your house? 

It has become less common to see 

properties festooned with a variety of 

‘for sale’ signs, but whether you choose 

to work with one agency or several is all 

a matter of personal choice. Either way, 

there are a few important things to bear 

in mind. 

Both options require the signing of a 

legal contract between you and the agency 

involved. These contracts, known as 

agency or ‘listing’ agreements, are legally 

binding so it’s a good idea to get advice 

from your lawyer before you sign. 

As the name suggests, a general agency 

agreement gives more than one agency the 

right to market your property. You will be 

asked to sign a general agency agreement 

with each agency. Each one will work with 

you to arrange open homes, and they will 

all market the property differently. 

“If you opt for a sole or ‘exclusive’ 

agency agreement, you are giving one 

agent or agency the exclusive right to 

market and sell your property,” explains 

Kevin Lampen-Smith, chief executive of 

the Real Estate Agents Authority (REAA). 

“If you sign a sole agency agreement 

you should not sign another agency 

agreement with any other agent until 

you have cancelled the first agreement. If 

you don’t, you may have to pay all agents 

a commission, regardless of which one 

arranged the sale.” 

Make sure you check what happens 

when the sole agency agreement is 

cancelled. Some sole agency agreements 

become general agency agreements when 

cancelled – this means that you will 

also have to cancel the general agency 

agreement if you no longer want to work 

with the agency. 

If you change your mind after signing 

a sole agency agreement you can cancel it 

by 5pm on the first working day after you 

have been given a copy. This must be done 

in writing (such as letter, email or fax). 

“Whether you choose one agency or 

take the general agency approach, the Real 

Estate Agents Authority recommends 

using agencies that choose to use 

specific clauses that we have designed 

to reduce the risk to you of paying two 

commissions,” Lampen-Smith says. 

“These clauses help protect you by 

making it clear when the agreement ends 

and when you need to pay a commission.” 

If you don’t use these agencies, your 

sole agency agreement for a residential 

property may be for a term longer than 90 

days. You should note though that you or 

the agent can cancel the agreement at any 

time after those 90 days. 

“However, if an agent carries out any 

work before the agreement is cancelled 

and that work results in the sale of the 

property after the agreement is cancelled, 

the agency agreement will be legally 

binding and you may have to pay the 

agent commission,” Lampen-Smith says. 

When a general or sole agency 

agreement is cancelled your agent 

must give you a list of people they 

have introduced to the property. If you 

subsequently sell to one of these people 

through a new agent, the first agent may 

still be entitled to a commission. 

In theory, multiple representation 

means the property will be seen by a 

larger number of potential buyers, so 

it has a greater chance of selling at a 

higher price. However, the risk in this 

arrangement is that because no one agent 

is solely responsible for marketing the 

property, they may be less committed to 

selling it. By contrast, a sole agency listing 

means the agent is obligated to do their 

best to sell the property.
