Lincoln High beards:
School sets out facial hair rules
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
LINCOLN HIGH School has
set the ground rules for its new
trial allowing students to grow
facial hair.
It is dropping its clean-shaven
only rule after its students
won a year-long
campaign for
facial hair.
A board of
trustees meeting
was held last
week to finalise
Kathy
Paterson
the rules and
the length of the
trial period. The
new rules require
facial hair to be tidy and no
longer than 3cm.
Facial hair must be groomed
and not extend on to the neck.
Longer beards may be allowed
for medical or cultural reasons.
Board of trustees chairman
Adrian Paterson said he does
not think the length of
the beards will be an issue.
“I don’t think anyone will be
running around with a ruler
to see if it is 3cm or not. It can
grow longer than a stubble but
we are not looking for full-on
old man beard,” he said.
Mr Paterson said the school
received a positive response for
the trial.
“We expected if anyone was
upset they would be getting in
touch but we haven’t really had
any of that,” he said.
The trial is expected to run
until the end of next year when
it will be reassessed.
“It is a trial period so we
are not tied to it forever, but
if it works well it is great,” Mr
Paterson said.
Principal Kathy Paterson said
she was happy with the process
the school went through to
make the decision.
An earlier survey of staff,
students and parents at the
school found many supported
allowing facial hair.
But Mrs Paterson said
she did not see the need to
release the survey.
NEW TRIAL: Lincoln
High School has laid
down the rules as part
of its new beard trial
for students.
“We have used the student
voice, we co-constructed the
outcome with the students.
There is no need at all. There
is a very strong voice for the
students to be tidy and well
represented,” she said.
In Brief
THIS
WEEK!
LIQUOR STORE CRITICS
An application for an off-licence
liquor store in Lincoln has
received 161 objections. Objections
to the proposed Liquorland
Lincoln on Vernon Drive
closed on Wednesday. A district
council spokesman said no date
had been set for a hearing as
the objection period just closed.
Another outlet, Lincoln Bottle
Store, wants to open on Gerald
St, about 100m from existing
off-licence, Super Liquor. It has
received 100 objections and a
hearing date is yet to be established.
SPEED LIMIT REVIEW
The district council is seeking
feedback on planned changes to
speed limits across the district.
The changes have been planned
following a district-wide review
of speed limits, and reflect the
growth in population and traffic
volume in Selwyn. Areas in
which it is planned to lower
speeds limits include Castle Hill,
Leeston, Lincoln, Prebbleton,
Rolleston and West Melton.
Feedback is open until Friday,
October 27, 5pm. For more
“My first pair of hearing aids...”
- Helen Beaumont’s Story
“Towards the end of last year I started to notice I
was struggling to hear. My husband had suggested I
should get my hearing checked. Honestly I thought
is was probably a build-up of wax in my ears. I
thought I didn’t need the hearing test or perhaps I
didn’t want to acknowledge it.
I finally booked an appointment to see Brenna.
When she checked – I had no wax in either ear! I
remember sitting in her hearing booth and wondering
why I was having such a detailed test – but,
I was finding it hard to hear the words that I was
meant to be repeating!
After the test was completed Brenna explained the
results and told me that I had a “moderate hearing
loss”. What a shock – I think I said “you’re kidding
me”. My shock was obvious and Brenna showed so
much empathy, and was so good dealing with my
emotions. Brenna said I would definitely benefit
from hearing aids and explained how they would
help me.
When I went back for a follow up appointment 2
weeks later I asked my husband to come with me.
Brenna had programmed some trial hearing aids
to suit my hearing loss and she showed me how to
put them on. I couldn’t believe it! it was amazing,
like a different world – I had tears running down
my face. I am sure the look on my face showed it
all. I said “I’ve got to have these”. Brenna explained
the various options that would be best suited to
me. There were various prices and getting my head
around investing that much in myself was a challenge
at the time. My husband agreed that I should
get them and ultimately it was an easy decision.
I have had follow up appointments with Brenna to
fine tune things and to help me get accustomed to
being a hearing aid wearer. She has been exceptional,
I can call her and see her whenever I need
advice. Given that I didn’t realise I needed an
audiologist at all, I am glad I chose Brenna. She is
caring and approachable and always there if I need
anything or have a question.
I honestly love my hearing aids. They are tiny so
you cannot even see them. I think the reason I was
upset when I found out I had a hearing loss is that
I pictured “Radar”, an old gentleman I remember
from childhood who had a huge contraption to help
him hear. Times have changed. My hearing aids are
connected to my iphone, I can make adjustments,
and when it rings, I hear it through the hearing aids.
It’s incredible! Although the first time the phone
rang, I must say I didn’t know what to do! Needless
to say there has been some fun in my getting
used to blue-tooth. I also remember the first time
getting into my car after having my aids fitted – the
radio and indicators were SO LOUD – it was amazing.
Evidence enough that my hearing was worse
than I had realised.
I am so happy. The clarity and crispness of sound
is fantastic. It sounds like a cliché, but hearing the
birds chirping again is such a joy. I guess because
hearing loss is gradual you don’t notice things that
slip away. Is life better? Yes! Even playing golf is
more enjoyable. I saw the tag line “Love your hearing”
at Brenna’s clinic and I can honestly say that I
now do. I cannot recommend her highly enough.”
