Prep your vehicle for
the holidays
Our lives can be hectic at times especially
around Christmas with us forgetting to do
more than fill up the car. If heading away on
holidays, our vehicles need to be up to the
job so organising a service and sorting out
any problems may avoid inconvenience or
even a ruined summer holiday.
“People are overlooking servicing their
vehicles however you can’t afford to be
broken down on the side of the road because
you forgot to have the car serviced. Getting
your vehicle towed to the nearest workshop
which may not be open, can be a dilemma,”
says Simon, owner of Rolleston Diesel &
Petrols.
“Important at this time of year, is making
sure your car is up to date with its servicing
and that it has a current warrant of fitness
and tyres in good condition, especially
before heading on a long trip. These also
contribute to good fuel economy,” adds Lisa
Fleck who with husband Nigel own and
operate Jones Road Auto and Selwyn Auto.
Lisa reminds about the air conditioning,
which can be unpleasant if not operating
properly.
Simon emphasises the importance of
reliable brakes and wiper blades in good
order.
“It’s important to make sure your brakes
have recently been checked, especially with
the volume of traffic on the road. You want
to be sure you can stop in a hurry if you need
to and if towing a caravan, boat or loaded
up with bikes and camping gear, the extra
weight can make it harder to stop quickly,”
adds Simon.
Simon has noticed that a number of
vehicles have been fitted with inferior wiper
blades that cause poor visibility when the
weather is changeable from rain to sun.
He recommends checking your blades and
fitting ones that will do the job.
While it is less likely your battery will
give you trouble over summer, if it is near
the end of its life it could let you down. The
charge in your battery can easily be checked
by popping into one of the service centres in
the district.
Auto electrical work is also covered in

standard rear vehicle lighting and courtesy
lighting along with batteries, power tools,
hand tools, communication equipment, and
