Thursday December 21 2017 9
on Christmas Day
Here are some of those
who will be working or
volunteering:
Medical staff
Christmas Day was no
different to any other public
holiday when it came to
staffing across Christchurch
Hospital. A Canterbury District
Health Board spokeswoman
said the last planned surgery
lists were tomorrow, with
people being discharged over
the weekend. There would be
nurses, doctors, allied health,
ward and admin support,
orderlies, food services,
cleaning staff, labs, radiology,
security and operations staff
working. “We also have senior
nursing, senior operations,
lab staff, radiology staff, allied
health and medical staff on
call and available if required.”
The spokeswoman said it
was a team effort keeping
the hospital running smoothly
and providing timely care
to those who did need to
be in on Christmas Day.
WellFood service manager
Neville Patrick said they were
expecting to feed about 700
patients at Christchurch and
Burwood Hospitals alone.
They will get hot baked ham
with pineapple glaze, roast
chicken with cranberry sauce,
Christmas pudding with
brandy sauce, strawberry
mousse and fruit mince pies.
Hospital staff wouldn’t be left
out – they will have Christmas
lunch and dinner in the
cafeterias.
St John
St John will have more
than 100 staff working across
Canterbury on Christmas Day.
In Christchurch there would
be 85 in total – five operations
resource assistants at the
Winchcombe St hub making
sure all vehicles are ready
to go, 40 in the 111 centre on
Orchard Rd, as well as 40
front-line ambulance officers.
Police
For operational reasons,
police could not go into
specific details on how many
front-line staff would be
EMERGENCY:
St John will
have more
than 100 staff
working across
Canterbury on
Christmas Day.
Right: About 250
volunteers will
help make the
Christchurch
City Mission’s
annual Christmas
Day lunch run
smoothly.
working. But a spokeswoman
said policing was a “24/7
business” so staff would
be working to ensure the
community could enjoy the
holiday season safely. About
50 staff would be working in
the Southern Communications
Centre on Christmas Day.
“Those working include
communicators, dispatchers,
team leaders and Inspectors,”
the spokeswoman said.
Firefighters
Forty-two career firefighters
will work on Monday, along
with about 200 volunteers
who will be on call.
Christchurch Metro area
commander Dave Stackhouse
said that was in Christchurch
alone. There would be
about 400 volunteers across
Canterbury on call. He said
Christmas Day was just like
any other day for firefighters.
“We just get on with the
business.” Mr Stackhouse
said it was up to the individual
stations as to whether they
celebrated in a particular
day. “Some would have a
team lunch and others have
raspberry jam sandwiches,” he
joked. Many volunteer stations
had family functions. “The
main thing is that everyone
has a nice, safe Christmas.”
City council staff
Complaints about potholes,
patrolling the city’s parks and
animal call-outs don’t stop on
Christmas Day. City council
head of human resources
Emma Davis said they
expected a similar number of
staff to be working as there
were last year, which was
39. The city council teams
represented on Monday
would include the animal
management, shift control,
shift engineers, customer
services, rangers and camping
ground teams, Ms Davis said.
“Staff would all receive at least
time-and-a-half for the time
worked.”
Christchurch City Mission
About 250 volunteers will
be on hand at Christchurch
City Mission to make its
annual Christmas Day lunch
run smoothly. City missioner
Matthew Mark said their roles
would range from serving
food to face-painting, and
generally contributing to
the logistics of looking after
about 750-800 guests. He
said in addition about 20 staff
would be working as well. “It
just goes to show the kindheartedness
and generosity
of the community that there’s
that many people who want to
help others in need.”
