A special welcome to new students and their whanau. I certainly look forward to meeting you in the near future. You are about to become part of the Riccarton family; a wonderfully diverse school community which prides itself on instilling strong values through a genuine belief in the ‘Riccarton Way’ (the wairua or sprit behind the way we think, act and relate to others.) Riccarton High School offers a wide range of Academic, Sporting, Cultural and Leadership opportunities in addition to a unique Outdoor Education experience - all contributing to the creation of a well-rounded ‘Riccarton Graduate.’ In addition, our school motto - ‘Disce ut prosis ‘ which translates as ‘Learn that you may be of service’ emphasises the importance of serving the community in which you live. A strong focus is placed on the hauora, or well-being, of students and staff. Having effective tools to deal with the challenges that modern day life presents us with is an essential part of the Riccarton Way. In 2018 Riccarton High School is looking forward to increased access to digital technology with our BYOD scheme across both Year 9 and Year 10. By the end of 2020 this will exist across the whole school. The digital device we view as another important learning tool in a blended learning environment which enables our ãkonga to be fully prepared for further study or employment opportunities. We know what we are. From our beginnings in 1877 we have only ever been a purpose built school for girls. When our school first opened on that September day in 1877 who could have envisaged 140 years later: three site moves, a number of earthquakes, 13 principals and a fabulous new building? In that time we have seen the move from ink pens to ball points, from blackboards to whiteboards to laptops. It makes you wonder what the future holds in store and how can you prepare for what may or may not be? At Christchurch Girls’ High School we work hard to build capacity in our students so that they are able to embrace the future with confidence.
