Rowers gear up for Maadi Cup
• By Andrew King
SCHOOL rowing crews have
one eye on the Maadi Cup as
they build towards the South
Island championships on Lake
Ruataniwha in Twizel.
After the first “blowout” of
the season at the Canterbury
championships in Twizel at the
weekend, crews quickly got back
on the water to improve before
the South Island regatta on
January 27-28.
The Maadi Cup, the biggest
school regatta of the year, will be
held in Twizel from March 19-24.
Christchurch crews won 10
golds at the Maadi Cup regatta
last year, with St Andrew’s
College winning the coveted boys
under-18 eights ahead of Christ’s
College.
Christchurch Boys’ High head
coach Logan Keys said while
there were some tired bodies after
a big camp in Alexandra days
before the Canterbury champs,
the sport was about putting in
the hard yards. Their training
paid off with CBHS winning
eight golds at the champs – which
included a blistering time of
6min 13.42sec to win the men’s
open eights – as well as three
silver and three bronze medals.
“This is our building phase of
the season. We are pretty happy
with where we are at right now,”
Keys said. “We will start to firm
up some combinations for Maadi
in the next few regattas,” he said.
Last year at the South Island
champs, CBHS crews took home
gold in the men’s club coxed
four, boys under-17 eights, boys
under-15 coxed octuple sculls,
boys under-16 coxed four, men’s
novice eights, boys under-15
eights and men’s open eights.
Rangi Ruru Girls’ School
director of rowing Mark Cotham
said the whole squad jumped
straight back into training after
the Canterbury champs and were
looking good. “The work rate
of the seniors right down to the
juniors has been great. We are
putting in the ground work and
mileage now with one eye on
Maadi,” he said.
Rangi Ruru also had a
successful outing at the weekend
with six golds – two of which
came in the women’s novice
eights and intermediate eights –
five silvers and one bronze.
At the South Island champs
last year, Rangi Ruru won gold
in the girls under-16 coxed four,
girls under-17 coxed four, girls
under-15 eights, girls under-17
eights and women’s under-19
eights.
