Time to rebuild
Like many other organisations in
Christchurch, our campus has been
broken and tested and if you visited
the college, you would see the obvious
effects of this – barren spaces at the
top of the drive, temporary facilities
installed to ‘make do’ – the most notable
of these being our chapel.
The demolition of the chapel seriously
challenged us. It was the single most
important building at St Bede’s College,
and had symbolised the heart and
soul of the College ever since the third
Rector, Father Gilbert, converted it from
the gymnasium in 1929.
Makeshift holy places in the last 6 years,
including the present facility, are a
poor imitation and far from ideal. But
we knew it was important to have this
sacred space – a place where we gather
in good times and in bad.
The time has now come to build a new
Chapel.
After the hard years, there is real
excitement and anticipation about
the prospect of the rebuild which will
significantly transform the campus.
We have set a fundraising goal of $1.5m
via our “A little from a lot” campaign. For
more information about the campaign,
please go to www.oldboys.stbedes.
St Bede’s is a College for all…a place
where gospel values are practised to
help form principled men; a learning
environment where everyone achieves;
a place that teachers want to come
to because of the strength of the
community; a place also, where boys
can embrace spiritual, sporting, cultural
and community activities, which all
combined shape boys into men. That’s
the priority and that is in our DNA.
The number of crashes
in the central city has
reduced by 17 per
cent since the speed
limit was dropped to
30km/h more than a
year ago
Sandy Chapman – I
avoid the city now. It’s full
of entitled cyclists (not
all but 99 per cent) and
pedestrians who don’t
look where they are going
– people taking selfies everywhere.
The roads make
no sense and there are road
works everywhere.
Lani Davidson – I actively
avoid the city, even as
part of my commute. This
war on cars in the central
city is a joke. It’s all well and
good making it safer for
pedestrians and cyclists, but
some day when everything
is fixed, how does the city
council think people will
get into the city in the first
place? Oh that’s right, with
a car that you can’t park
anywhere because there’s a
cycle lane in the way.
Bridget Compton-
Moen – Here come all
the “I never go into the
city because it’s a dump”
comments. Your loss. It is
so much better than it was
before the earthquakes.
I remember walking
through Shades Arcade
just before the September
quake and every second
shop was for lease. It
was the saddest place ever.
Yes, it’s a work in progress
at the moment but there
is always something new
to see. Interesting how the
people who actually work
in the CBD love it.
come a day when there are
no road works.
Leon Austin – It’s
made it more dangerous
as pedestrians and cyclists
seem to think everywhere
is a pedestrian/cycle lane
and take no notice of
cars. I’ve lost count of the
amount of times I’ve had
to slam on my brakes to
stop running someone or
a cyclist over who casually
walk out/cycle out into the
middle of the road.
Barb Thomsen-
Britten – Sadly, I think
more folk avoid driving
through the city. I would
not shop there as parking
costs are horrific. Malls are
free. I once shopped readily
in the city.
POSITIVE:
The lower
speed
limit in the
central city,
such as on
Montreal St,
has reduced
the number
of crashes
and injuries
in the first 18
months since
the change.
Sally Lane – Does the
city council want people
in the central city? Don’t
go there. We live and
shop north of Waimak.
Rangiora and Kaiapoi has
everything we need.
Rob Fey – I spend more
time waiting at lights than
actually moving, and I still
see more cars than cycles,
you can make as many
cycle lanes as you want it’s
not going to force anyone
to ride them.
Tanya Didham – Never
understood why there is
so much bike-hate in this
flat, easy-to-bike-around
city? I’m too scared to ride
a bike in town because
of all the terrible drivers,
and although I am a car
driver, I would prefer to
see cars out of the central
city altogether and just
better public transport.
Cars make it smelly and
congested – not the way of
the future.
Ingrid Porta – The
only people I see driving at
30km/h are those searching
for a car park.
Kate Webber – If only
they spent as much on fixing
the roads as they have
on cycle lanes. The state of
the roads are a complete
disgrace and as far as I can
see there’s no plans to improve
them (for motorists).
I don’t think there will ever
Linzi Woods – And
we all get old getting to
work some of us are retired
before we get there. Less
crashes because no one
wants to drive in the CBD
anymore = less cars = less
people so obviously less
crashes.
Philip Nelson – I’ll be
interested to see how the
traffic volumes add into the
equation.
Teressa Paurini – I
love it. I used to hate driving
there, now it’s not so
bad.
