SnowbirdsRVTravelers
Reader Leo Gebert was inspired by Snowbirds & RV Travelers to drive to Arizona via Moab and
Monument Valley, Utah. Pictured is the Landscaping Arch in Arches National Park.
The end of winter is in our sights and we hope
you’ve had some grand adventures over the
colder months. If you’ve been hibernating
a little (I will guiltily raise my hand to join
you) then spring is a perfect time to rejoin the
world of RVing. With the days getting longer
and the temperatures getting warmer, spring
is the ideal season to get out and make some
new connections. RVing is a great way to build
your community, whether it is joining a new
club, attending an RV event, visiting a new
campground or searching on social media;
RVing can bring people together.
In this issue of Snowbirds and RV Travelers,
you can read how our publisher and editorin-chief
viewed some exciting new RV’s at
the RVIA (Recreational Vehicle Industry
Association) Show in Louisville, Kentucky.
At the show, the top RV manufacturers
gathered to show RV dealers their new models
and product lines - finally unveiling the
innovative features and design trends that will
shape your RV purchase decisions in 2018.
If you need a little motivation to get ready
for the season we have a Product Showcase full
of ideas, Travel Tips on Booking Now for Spring
RVing and an article on how to Get Your RV
Water System Ready For Spring.
If you’re looking for some new destinations,
why not try touring in Prince Edward
County (page 16), riding the train in Vancouver
(page 34), biking in Napa Valley (page
46) or RVing in Arizona (page 52)?
Another great way to make a connection
is to sit outside and talk to your neighbours.
Create a new outdoor space using our How
to Install a Patio Room instructions. If you
invite a new friend to help you with the
setup, you will definitely kill two birds with
one stone.
We’d love to hear about your spring
travels or your new connections.
Travel Tips
By Cassandra Redding
Book Now for Spring RVing
Have you booked your 2018 RV trip yet? Though the chilly Canadian winter may not
have you thinking about camping outdoors just yet, now is precisely the right time to
start planning. Having to book early won’t be news to many seasoned RVers, but if you
are new to the lifestyle, you might be surprised to learn that the team at RV Snowbirds
and Travelers will not only have our spring trips thought out, but also our summer trips
planned and booked before spring officially arrives. HERE’S HOW:
EVAN KIRBY
I’m always shocked that people think they can
make plans to go camping just a few days before
they want to leave. I’ve been in the line-up at
the park office registration desk and witnessed
the frustration of people who refuse to believe
the park is full. Follow these tips to ensure you
aren’t one of those people who has to get back
in your RV and make the sad journey home.
Parks Canada 2018 reservations opened
in January. This is a reservation service for the
35 National Parks and Historic sites across
Canada. Visit www.reservation.parkscanada.
gc.ca or call 1-877-RESERVE (1-877-737-
3783). You will find a detailed list of exactly
when each park is accepting reservations.
Most provincial parks have either an
online and/or phone registration system
so you can book your site many months in
advance. Yes, it will take some planning on
your part. Maybe you don’t know what dates
you want to camp or where you want to go
yet, but take the time to figure it out. It beats
the alternative of staying home and RVing in
the backyard. (See sidebar for handy links to
book in a provincial park).
While you are planning, also research the park
or parks you want to camp at before registration
opens. If you want the best chance of getting your
favourite site, pick your campsite in advance and
book as soon as registration opens.
Failing that, try somewhere new. Lots of
RVers like to go back to the same campground
over and over and the competition to get into
one of these is fierce and frustrating. Many of the
lesser-known parks are just as beautiful, and you
may have better success.
Be aware that holiday weekends such as Victoria
Day, July 1st and Labour Day are the season’s
most popular times for camping; making it harder
to get a camp site. Try to arrive on a weekday — a
week-long reservation will then allow you to take
advantage of staying throughout the weekend.
Check the site for openings daily. If your
favourite campsite or campground is booked, a
cancellation may be your opportunity to get in on
short notice. Best of luck with your reservations!
Waterfront camping is available in Sandbanks Provincial Park
come late April.
PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY
P
rince Edward County has become a hot
spot among RVers in recent years because
of its country touring, choice of RV parks, rural
attractions, and activities that happen all year.
Come spring, after winter’s thaw, The County
begins to bloom – not only in its agricultural
community – but in the growing number of
attractions and things to do.
Located just south of Hwy 401, two hours east
of Toronto and consisting of a detached peninsula
surrounded by Lake Ontario, the communities of
The County are easily accessed from Trenton or
Belleville, and it’s best to plan your destinations –
as there are many.
CAMPING, BEACHES, AND PARKS
Most – if not all – of the RV parks in Prince Edward
County are closed during winter’s chill. That
doesn’t mean you can’t still use your RV this time
of year. Places such as Sandbanks Provincial Park
or the series of conservation areas offer numerous
trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
Ice fishing, too, is a favourite pastime as many
die-hard anglers can be seen on the Bay of Quinte
fishing for walleye, while members of the Prince
Edward County Trail Riders Snowmobile club
blast along the 220 km (136 miles) of designated
trails. So, if you own a sport utility trailer – or any
RV for that matter - with your sleds or gear stowed
away – you will be set for a winter adventure.
Local wines can be tasted throughout the region.
Come spring, the action continues with a
myriad of activities and places to visit as many
of the RV parks ramp up for the new season.
Sandbanks Provincial Park is one of the first to
open for overnight camping and is very popular
among RVers. Sandbanks is renowned for having
the largest freshwater sandbar and dune system
in the world, making it a well-known beach
paradise along the shores of Lake Ontario.
The park encompasses three beaches —
Outlet, Dunes, and Sandbanks. While Outlet
and Dunes are the most popular because of
their rental shops and facilities, Sandbanks is
more secluded (but without the extra services).
Although cooler weather still prevails in April
or early May, the beaches are perfect to admire
sunsets or enjoy long strolls.
A series of campgrounds are featured in the
park and include Outlet (A&B), Cedars Campground,
Richardson’s Campground, Woodlands
Campground and the new (as of 2017) West
Lake Campground, which is specifically for
RVs. Each offers diverse settings and range from
tent-only sites to full-service, pull-through spots
that can fit the largest of rigs. Some common
services among all five campgrounds include
showers, flush toilets and laundry facilities
(except Richardson campground).
After winter’s thaw, Prince Edward County opens up
to a growing number of attractions and things to do.
ARTS, AGRICULTURE, AND MORE
IN PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY
The largest community in Prince Edward
County is Picton, and with its location
overlooking Picton Bay, anglers swarm to this
area every year. Visit Ontario.ca to learn about
the regulations and the open seasons for each
species in the region. If your visit clashes with
a closed season (especially in the spring),
don’t despair.
Picton and The County offer lots of action
on land, too. Its downtown area is lined
with many galleries, artisan boutiques, and
restaurants, with a number of museums and
historical sites to visit.
Admire the life-size bronze statue of
Canada’s first Prime Minister, John A.
Macdonald, which commemorates his early
years of law in the community, or visit Macaulay
Heritage Park, an 1850s period home and
historic church that showcases the area’s past.
You may also want to visit The Rose House
Museum, which was built in the 1800s and
owned by five generations of the Rose Family.
Both are open from Victoria Day to Labour Day.
More attractions that open for Victoria
Day weekend can be found in Ameliasburgh,
approximately 28 km (17 miles) from Picton.
There’s the Ameliasburgh Heritage Village,
a fascinating historic site that includes a full
pioneer village that dates back to 1868. You can
also travel the 20 minutes south to Wellington
to visit the Wellington Heritage Museum.
One the biggest highlights practically any
time of the year is Prince Edward County’s deep
agricultural roots. Wineries, quaint restaurants,
craft breweries, and market farms are more than
happy to share their expertise. The best way to
discover all of the flavours of The County is to
drive The Taste Trail, which leads along scenic,
two-lane country roads in and around Wellington,
Bloomfield, Picton and beyond.
For starters, head west along the Loyalist Parkway
(Hwy 33) from Picton to Bloomfield where
you can visit The Waring House on Sandy Hook
Rd. This 19th-century inn features period rooms
and the on-site Barley Room where you taste local
wines, cider, and craft beer. It’s also home to Amelia’s
Garden where you can experience fine dining
and its locally-sourced menu items.
Another popular spot in Bloomfield is Angeline’s
Inn and the Hubb Eatery & Lounge on Main
St. Sip Premium Cider from Waupoos-based
County Cider Company, or try some cool, local
craft beer from Picton-based Barley Days. If you’re
impressed with these beverages, both (and many
other) breweries offer tours of their local facilities.
Further North – via Hwy 62 – on Hwy 1,
is Huff Estates Winery and Inn next to Oeno
Gallery. Or, continue west (along Hwy 1) through
Hillier to visit the heart of the wine country as the
scenic, rural route will bring you back around to
the tail end of Loyalist Parkway where you can vis-
Get Ready
To CAMP
AT PARKBRIDGE RESORTS
Looking for something different to do in 2018? Parkbridge Resorts
offer an excellent opportunity for the perfect ready-to-camp adventure.
Ready-to-camp options offer a unique opportunity to try out a more
rustic experience, while remaining well-sheltered and comfortable. For
those that are used to camp tenting, the yurts, cabins, park model cottages
and other options allow you the chance to step it up a notch.
Here’s why you should try ready-to-camp:
Affordability
The ready-to-camp options are generally much
cheaper than hotel rooms. For example, you
can rent a six-person yurt at their participating
resorts in BC, Ontario, and Quebec for one low
price. These comfortable yurts are equipped with
beds, a refrigerator, and BBQ for ample summertime
glamping enjoyment.
Connect with Nature
Although sleeping under the stars can be nice,
there are times when it is more enjoyable to have
a roof over your head. The ready-to-camp rentals
provide the perfect link between open-air camping
and staying in a hotel room. You get all the
benefits of a solid roof above you, but still hear
the wildlife and feel the wind. If you camp in one
of their yurts, you will enjoy a large skylight in
the roof that lets the sun in during the day and
also lets you stargaze at night.
Enjoy the Glamping Lifestyle
With ready-to-camp, you get to experience
refined camping, also known as “glamping.”
With spacious beds, a fridge, storage space and
a BBQ, you’ve got all of the creature comforts
of home but still get to experience the camping
lifestyle complete with a fire-pit and natural
surroundings.
Bring People Together
Hotel rooms have a way of segmenting groups.
With the spacious ready-to-camp options an entire
family can comfortably stay together. Being
in the same room encourages group games and
storytelling — two things that are increasingly
endangered in our technological world.
In addition to spending time with family, the
resort community provides family-friendly activities
such as BBQs, dances, and other social
events to enjoy. Great family-friendly amenities
such as pools, horseshoe pits, volleyball courts,
and so much more await you at their resorts.
Have A Big Family Or A Large Group Of Friends?
Many of the Parkbridge ready-to-camp options
are located side by side, and can accommodate
large groups who want to stay together.
Exploration Made Easy
Being surrounded by nature, you’ll want
nothing more than to explore your surroundings.
The ready-to-camp options are located
in the perfect setting – allowing for easy, and
ample exploration.
Enjoy the beaches in many of the Parkbridge
resorts or picture your days soaking
up the sun lakeside followed by a campfire,
then tucking yourself and the kids into your
cozy rental for the night.
There are so many daytrip exploration options
at their resorts, including visits to local
towns, nature hikes, kayaking, golfing, miniputt,
enjoying local restaurants, ice-cream
shops and much more.
STORY BY PERRY MACK
RV TRENDS
for 2018
THE RVIA HOSTS THE LARGEST TRADE-ONLY RV SHOW IN NORTH AMERICA EVERY NOVEMBER IN LOUISVILLE,
KENTUCKY. HERE, THE TOP RV MANUFACTURERS GATHER TO SHOW RV DEALERS THEIR NEW MODELS AND PRODUCT
LINES - FINALLY UNVEILING THE CONSTRUCTION AND TREND DESIGNS THAT WILL SHAPE OUR RV PURCHASE
DECISIONS IN 2018 - AND BEYOND.
Manufacturers are producing and selling
more RVs than ever before, and
the forecast for 2018 is even higher
— up by 200% over the bottom in 2007.
Their goal is to improve the customer
experience by expanding beyond the existing
customer base with new features and marketing
campaigns for millennials and diverse ethnic
groups. This intent is great for us, as RVers,
as we will see continual improvements in the
purchasing experience, the quality and diversity
of RV models, and the availability and quality
of campgrounds. Manufacturers know that
while more RVs are being sold, the number of
campgrounds is stagnant - and that we need to
have more and better campgrounds (including
public lands) for growth in the industry to
continue.
Better service starts with better technicians.
The RVIA is working to improve the number of
knowledgeable RV technicians with more investment
in training and new methods to make
the service cycle faster.
Many of the top trends are influenced by
millennials, the fastest growing demographic
of RV purchasers. Studies by the RVIA show
that this group wants more modern interiors
following residential design trends like
matching appliances. To meet this demand,
Dometic revealed a new line of kitchen appliances,
which feature a contemporary look —
including fridges that match the ranges, range
hoods and coordinating microwaves.
On a more technical note, electrical power
systems are becoming more effective with collaborations
like the one between Erwin Hymer
Group North America (EHGNA) and Watt
Fuel Cell Corp. to test the Imperium Hybrid
Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) power manage-
Winnebago Intent with modern residential interior.
ment system on an RV. The Imperium SOFC
system utilizes the hybrid power manager to
improve fuel cell and solar capabilities and maximize
energy storage. It creates power efficiently
and quietly from propane and solar energy,
providing clean power on demand, with no engine
or generator noise, and no exhaust. Class B
manufacturers like Roadtrek and Pleasure-Way,
are designing new models whose floorplans and
technology are unrivaled. It’s relatively easy to
add amenities to a large coach, but what their
designers have achieved in power technology,
and the creation of a luxurious, comfortable
living space in a van, is absolutely wondrous.
Getting off-grid to connect with nature is
also a growing trend and has resulted in a larger
segment of off-road capable trailers, along with
more sustainable construction techniques.
New entries to the off-road segment include
the No Boundaries (NOBO) line from Forest
River. Their mantra is towability, affordability,
and versatility. They are towable by vehicles
that we already own as most trailers are under
2000 lbs and all are under 5000 lbs - still with
full kitchens. Their goal is to make them as
affordable as a family cell phone plan, and
versatile through the use of Rhino Roof racks,
so you can bring the gear you love, whether
it’s kayaks, bikes or paddleboards. High-tech
features include speakers and fridges that are
controllable through the Bluetooth capabilities
of your smartphone.
Jayco has redesigned many of their coaches
and introduced completely new RVs like the
Melbourne Prestige with styling features such as
European rounded cabinets, ultra-leather seating,
and technology including a Garmin infotainment
system. The Entegra line is luxury in smaller packages,
with efficient floorplans for RVers looking to
downsize from their 45’ motor coaches without
giving up high-end style and amenities.
Lance Campers introduces the all-new
2465 ultralight, their largest travel trailer to
date, which has a double slide with a king
size bed and a 40” TV on an electric lift. Roof
racks have always been an integral part of their
truck campers and are now a feature of their
travel trailers as well. Rather than build specific
off-road models, Lance has done something
brilliant by offering an off-road package for any
trailer, which adds 2.5” of ground clearance.
Taxa Outdoors is a three-year-old start-up
that provides rugged, comfortable campers.
They don’t use the word RV but instead like to
say they build adventure equipment you can
sleep in. They are targeting the millennials,
adventure seekers, boondockers, and minimalists,
by building environmentally-friendly
trailers that can be towed by smaller vehicles.
Lance 2375 travel trailer with modern interior.
Lance offers an offroad package for all their travel trailers.
for someone creating a trailer that is lightweight,
rugged, durable, easily stored, and is equipped with
design features that intelligently make use of every
available space and surface.
Winnebago brings us the Revel Class B, which
is a 4x4 diesel van that allows you to go outdoors
truly anywhere, without getting stuck. The Winnebago
Fuse is a Class C that maximizes daytime
living space by incorporating a powered murphy
bed. The Intent is a uniquely designed entry-level
gas Class A that has narrow corner pillars for great
views from the cab and standard LP tanks that
can be removed to fill - you don’t need to take the
motorhome to get propane. The Horizon Class
A diesel pusher brings new modern design to the
market - especially dramatic in their trendy concept
units.
My favourite design trend, aside from the
off-road models, is one that appeals to every
demographic. Like the return of vintage clothing
and turntables for vinyl records, a return to the
retro looks of the 50’s is popping up, complete with
diner-inspired interior colours and exterior details
like white-walled tires. They are fun and funky
weekend escape vehicles that make you smile and
sigh contentedly with every glance.
Although back to nature and retro looks are
part of the latest trends - complete disconnection
is not. Most of these designs include USB ports,
advanced entertainment systems, and technology
to improve WiFi range.
You can watch full 2018 reveals from manufacturers
on our YouTube channel, where they not
only display the new lines but also confess to the
deficiencies in their older models, which led to
the improvements for 2018. These are especially
important to watch if you are contemplating
purchasing a discounted 2017 model. The channel
also has detailed 2018 model walkthroughs with
top RV staff - from regional managers to CEOs.
Cariboo
Chilcotin
Land Without Limits
In July 2017, British Columbia declared a state of emergency when over 200 fires were burning,
mostly in the central region of the province. Residents from the Cariboo Chilcotin region, including
Williams Lake, along with other communities in central British Columbia such as Ashcroft and 100
Mile House, were given evacuation orders. The area not only survived, but is still thriving and ready
for the next season. Whether you’ve got a hankering to ride the range, relive Gold Rush history, fish to
your heart’s content, get an adrenaline rush, or just get away from it all, the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast
offers the perfect places to do just that.
THOMAS DRASDAUSKIS
History of the
Cariboo Chilcotin
Just over 150 years ago, the lure of gold
changed the face of British Columbia forever.
The magnificence of the province’s interior
was revealed to the world when on August 17,
1862, prospector Billy Barker found a major
gold deposit at Williams Creek in the northern
Cariboo. Gold fever spread like an epidemic
when news of the strike filtered out, bringing
excited hordes of fortune seekers from around
the world into this remote wilderness. Starting
in New Westminster, the Gold Rush Trail winds
its way north to Barkerville.
Many of the region’s early miners were
Chinese immigrants, who worked white
prospectors’ abandoned mines and tailings
by washing sand and gravel from rocks that
were then neatly piled on the Fraser River’s
shores. These ‘Chinese rocks’ are still visible
today. By the mid-1860s, thousands of Chinese
lived in Barkerville and several other gold rush
towns, including Stanley, Van Winkle, Quesnel,
Antler, Quesnelle Forks and Lillooet, where
Chinese miners took millions out of Cayoosh
Creek. These immigrants also operated stores,
laundries, lodging houses and worked as cooks.
Though few struck it rich, the Gold Rush completely
changed the face of British Columbia.
Roads and bridges were built, stores and mills
opened and ranches were founded.
The historic Gold Rush Trail has many
places along its route to stop, explore, and get a
feel of what it was like back then, as you retrace
the steps of the oxen carts and stagecoaches.
Many of today’s communities along this route
have historical connections to the gold rush era.
Some began as roadhouses where stagecoaches
stopped, travelers could overnight, and horses
would feed and water.
Clinton showcases its lovely museum in a
colourful red brick building, which once served
as a schoolhouse and later as a courthouse. At the
108 Mile Ranch Historic Site, pioneer buildings
include a 1908 log barn that was built to house
a herd of 200 Clydesdale horses. At Xatśūll Heritage
Village you learn of traditional indigenous
practices and history. The former gold rush
supply centre of Quesnel hosts Billy Barker Days
in mid-July commemorating the region’s most
famous gold seeker.
The Gold Rush Trail’s terminus is the restored
heritage town of Barkerville, recognized as a Canadian
National Heritage Site. Period interpreters
roam the streets dressed as historical characters;
Judge Matthew Begbie (known in his time as the
‘hanging judge’) hands out frontier justice. Visitors
can also pan for gold, enjoy the local eateries, be
entertained by the Theatre Royal’s live musicals,
and stay the night in a local hotel or B&B. The
Gold Rush Trail brings history to life.
Williams Lake is Ready to Ride
by Thomas A. Schoen, First Journey Trails
Williams Lake caught the attention of many
this summer when the entire city including the
surrounding large rural area was evacuated. Many
prized possessions were driven out of town that
July night, and among those cherished items were
the latest most technically advanced mountain
bikes and gear. The Williams Lake area, dubbed
as the Shangri-La of mountain biking by the International
Mountain Bike Association, was under
serious threat of years of work and investment
going up in flames.
The area around Williams Lake boasts over
400 km (248 miles) of networked trails, leading
into the bowl of the valley with the city centre and
lake. With access close to downtown Williams
Lake, the five trail networks are well supported
by the local business community, where one can
easily find a fellow enthusiast to point out where
to get a shuttle to the trailheads.
“We are so fortunate that our trail systems
were not severely impacted by the fires this past
summer,” says Thomas Schoen, President of the
Cariboo Mountain Bike Consortium and one of
the mentors involved in trail building projects.
“We have thousands of hours invested in projects
that have involved youth, volunteers, and First
Nation crews, building our single track trails. The
region suffered some setbacks in our finances for
this year with the loss of our visitor season, but we
will be back in 2018 ready to go.” The latest trail in
the network opened on November 2, at the Soda
Creek First Nation Community Hall. It is a 20
km (12 miles) cross-country trail connecting the
Xatśūll Heritage Village with Whispering Willows
Campsite.
“First Nations were always dependent on trails.
They were the first trail builders in this area, and
there are many parallels between us as active trail
users and the First Nations Communities being
trail builders and trail users for tens of thousands
of year,” says Schoen. “In partnership with the
Aboriginal Youth Mountain Bike Association, new
trails get developed and constructed all over the
Province.
Williams Lake was one of the first municipalities
to work with First Nation governments to
develop trail building workshops and collaborate
on the extensive network in the area.
“Every year we add trails and services that
make riding the Cariboo a world-class riding experience,”
says Schoen. “We want to let people know
that we are in good shape and ready to ride.”
Still Open for Business
by Manuela Betschart (President) Fishing
Highway Tourist Association
This past summer was one we will never forget.
The Elephant Hill fire threatened our area along
Hwy 24 and some of us were under evacuation
alert for 77 days, and many had to leave homes
and businesses for 10 plus days. Visitors stayed
away from our area due to smoky conditions
and the alerts, which were in place throughout
the summer. The road closures also made it really
hard to travel. Some RV parks had to cancel
the stay of their own guests, which was hard to
do since we usually try to fill our RV sites and
not the other way around. A lot of cancellations
were the result, not to mention, that most
businesses lost a lot of their income during the
summer months.
During a time of difficulty and hardship,
it was great to have guests staying in contact
with their favourite resorts and checking on us,
some on a daily basis. Many concerned guests
phoned to see how we were dealing with the
fires and some just wished us luck or said a
prayer in the hope that the fire wouldn’t reach
any one of us.
Thankfully, no businesses along Hwy 24
burnt down nor had impacts on their structures.
We are looking forward to our next RV season -
the trees are still standing and green along Hwy
24, so the lovely views of the lakes have not been
impacted by the fire season.
RV owners/operators certainly hope for a
better 2018 tourism year. We look forward to
seeing you at one of the most beautiful, natural
RV settings along Hwy 24.
Vancouver
RIDING THE RAILS
W
e decided to leave our vehicle in the city
of Mission for the day, and travel on
the West Coast Express commuter train into
Vancouver. West Coast Express (WCE) has five
trains travelling westbound Monday to Friday
mornings from Mission, BC to Waterfront Station
Terminal in downtown Vancouver, returning
eastbound to Mission in the afternoon, after
working hours. We caught the 6:25 am train and
arrived at the Waterfront station at 7:40 am. It
was our first time on a train, so we didn’t know
what to expect. We did a lot of research on the
internet the day before, which helped plan our
trip on the WCE and three Skytrain lines.
The personnel from WCE Mission Station
were very accommodating - they even showed
us how to get our boarding pass through their
electronic ticketing vending machine. Seating
on the trains is first-come-first-served, but it was
no problem getting a second-floor seat on the
right side of the train heading west into Vancouver.
We thought this would be the best side
because we would be following Burrard Inlet on
the last half of the ride and would be able to see
the marinas, freighters, yachts, bridges and the
city’s dry docks entering downtown Vancouver.
The seats were comfortable, and we had a
table with an electrical plug-in for laptops. The
windows were big and clean, and the ride was
smoother than we expected. At the beginning
of the trip, we were traveling faster than the
road traffic beside us on the Lougheed Hwy, but
as we got closer to Vancouver, the traffic was
busier, and the train stops were more frequent,
slowing us down a little.
West Coast Express has seven stops on the
75-minute ride. By the time WCE got to their
third stop (Port Coquitlam), over 100 people
STORY AND PHOTOS BY
CINDY PHILLIPS AND GORDON BARON
were waiting to board and when we arrived at
our destination, it was standing room only. The
journey was fantastic; we started out following
the Fraser River, with a great view of the
commercial activity from the forest industry.
Sawmills, shake mills, pole companies, sawdust
barges, log booms and dozer boats lined the
shoreline. Our window seat was on the right side
of the train, facing mostly in a northerly direction
out of the morning sunshine, which was great for
photographs, especially when we arrived in Port
Moody and the start of Burrard Inlet.
When the train arrived at the final destination
at Waterfront Station, it was rush hour, so
we waited for everyone to leave the train before
we got out of our seats, avoiding the traffic jam
at the exit gates. The stop is Vancouver’s “Grand
Central Station” — people were getting off
TransLinks ferry, “Seabus,” bringing commuters
Second floor of West Coast Express commuter’s car at Mission City Station.
in from North Vancouver to the Waterfront
Station. It is the also the main terminal for the
rapid transit “Skytrain” commuter train. We just
sat on a bench outside the station for twenty
minutes until the rush eased up a little. When
you do not have to drive or walk in this work
hour madness, it is very entertaining to peoplewatch.
By 8:30 am, most of the people seemed
to be at work, so we headed for the Waterfront
Skytrain terminal.
We bought a pass in Mission when we got on
the WCE train for $22, which also included the
WCE train return trip, free passage for the day on
any of the Skytrain routes and free passage on the
Vancouver’s ferry “Seabus” to North Vancouver.
It didn’t matter which train came in first bound
for any direction because we were going on all
their routes to their lower mainland destinations.
The Skytrain has three main routes. The
Expo line goes from Waterfront Station, past
Science World next to False Creek, to New
Westminster, and over the Fraser River on
Skybridge into Surrey with the last stop being
King George Station. The Canada Line has two
different destinations starting from Waterfront
Station. Both head south underground to
Marine Drive then surface and cross the North
Arm of the Fraser River. One route travelling
into into the city of Richmond, and the other to
the Vancouver International Airport.
Both trains have connections to get on either
course at Bridgeport Station. The Millennium
Line starts at Clark Street in Vancouver and
goes to University Way in Burnaby. This route
Crossing the Fraser River on Skytrain’s Expo Line Skybridge from New Westminster to Surrey.
Transit buses and Skytrain transporting commuters from WCE to their home destinations after work.
is a little more complicated because they have
added a new extension from this route called
the Evergreen Line, which goes to Lafarge
Lake-Douglas Station. You also have to start off
on the Expo Line from Waterfront Station and
get off at Clark Street.
The commentary on board is very well done
and gives you lots of warning which stop is next
and what stop connects with another route. It is
a recording because all trains have no conductors.
If you happen to get off at the wrong
stop, no worries, another train comes by in five
minutes. The train is fast and very quiet. If you
happen to get the front window seat, it almost
feels like you are on a roller coaster going up
and down, turning left and right, going over
bridges and through tunnels.
This is a must trip if you are planning to visit
Vancouver and the outlying areas. Seeing the
sights from the second floor of the West Coast
Express train, or above the streets using Skytrain,
gave us a new perspective on the beauty
of the lower mainland.
rivers flow through the boreal forest? Try a park
you haven’t visited before or explore an entire
region, staying in different parks along your route.
SPRING TIME IN ALBERTA
After the May long weekend, most facilities are up
and running for the season, and visiting a park in
spring or early summer is an extraordinary experience.
Migrating birds fill the morning with songs,
and wildlife is moving from wintering grounds
to their summer homes. Evenings are just cool
enough for snuggling a little closer to the campfire,
and dark skies are perfect for stargazing before
bedtime. Come prepared for the cooler temperatures,
and enjoy the peace and quiet as well as the
sights and fresh smells of spring in the air.
Before you venture out in the early spring call
the park to confirm it is open and what services
will be available, so you can pack the necessities
for a happy, memorable camping experience.
ADVANTAGES OF CAMPING IN SPRING
• Reservations not required, except for the May
long weekend
• Cooler temperatures are better for hiking and
other daytime activities
• Wildlife is more commonly seen when there are
fewer people and pets
• No crowds
• No mosquitoes
IMPORTANT TIPS FOR OFF-SEASON ACTIVITIES
• Call before you go
• Be prepared for self-registration; have cash or
personal cheques with you
• Dress in layers
• Be prepared for all kinds of weather
• Be prepared for reduced services in campgrounds
• You may need to bring firewood
• You may need to bring potable water
STEWARDSHIP AND CARING
When we participate in outdoor activities, we impact
the natural landscape, the resident wildlife,
and other visitors. We encourage park visitors
to practice stewardship through responsible
behavior, by following the rules and regulations
in the parks and being aware of the impact of your
activities on the environment and your camping
neighbours.
Campers are reminded that campfires should
never be left unattended and always use a designated
fire pit. Where the wildfire hazard is high,
fire bans may be in place.
Robles
FROM SUN COMMUNITIES
OFFERING A TOAST TO CLASSIC CALIFORNIA
Amid rolling vineyards and the oak-studded landscape, a short drive from the ocean
but far from the bustle of the city, Paso Robles offers a unique blend of the Old West
and sophisticated wine culture on California’s famed Central Coast.
February/March 2018 SNOWBIRDS & RV TRAVELERS 43
Known to locals as “Paso” and located halfway
between San Francisco and Los Angeles, this
is a small town that channels California’s past
while simultaneously reinventing itself.
The newly built Cava Robles RV Resort
offers RV travelers a luxurious place to stay
that takes advantage of the 200 wineries that
surround it. Meanwhile, a short distance from
the resort, visitors can find pristine coastlines,
postcard-perfect mountain peaks, and flower-covered
plains.
Snow-weary travelers will revel in Paso’s mild
climates with average temperatures in the 15°C
to 21°C (59°F to 70°F) range during the winter
and spring. As summer heats up, so too does the
local entertainment scene, led by the well-known
acts that perform at the California Mid-State Fair
and the Vina Robles Amphitheatre.
Beginning in the mid-1800s, it was Paso’s hot
mineral springs that first made the city a draw for
outside visitors, including celebrities such as boxer
Jack Dempsey, President Theodore Roosevelt,
Douglas Fairbanks and Clark Gable.
While Spanish conquistadors and Franciscan
missionaries had introduced wine grapes to the
soil here in 1797, it would be nearly 200 years
before commercial production picked up. And
today Paso Robles rivals Sonoma County as a
premier wine destination – without the traffic.
Paso Robles Wine Country offers dozens of
wine grape varietals and vintages, and lavish wineries
display coffee-table-book views of the vast
open space around them. Winery owners know
it’s vital to create a fun, inviting tasting experience,
so they often incorporate other activities,
including art demonstrations, live music and
winemaker dinners, for the traveling enthusiast
who wants a broader wine experience.
Just as Paso Robles has emerged as a leading
wine destination, it has also become a leader in
the craft beer movement, led by Firestone Walker,
which hosts the annual Firestone Walker
International Beer Festival in June.
While wine and craft beer appeals to the
sophisticated and the hip, Paso has also retained
its Old West charm, reflected in its farm-to-table
restaurants, the annual fair rodeo, and scenic
cattle ranches.
While Cava Robles RV Resort visitors will
find plenty to do in Paso Robles, nearby cities
and towns offer unique charms, loaded with
opportunities to enjoy the beautiful San Luis
Obispo County outdoors.
Lake Nacimiento, known for its dragon
shape, provides ample opportunity for waterskiing,
wakeboarding, and jet skiing. Travellers
can visit a zoo in Atascadero or try ziplining in
Santa Margarita. On the coast, in San Simeon,
the Hearst Castle offers a glimpse into publishing
mogul William Randolph Hearst’s lavish
home filled with museum-worthy artwork.
Meanwhile, the seaside community of Morro
Bay is anchored by the majestic Morro Rock,
a 200-metre (600 ft) volcanic formation once
used as a navigation point for Spanish explorers.
San Luis Obispo is a quaint college town
often referred to as the Happiest City in America,
featuring an inviting downtown, a popular
farmers’ market, and mountain hiking trails
offering panoramic views. Those who travel to
San Luis Obispo County often stop in Pismo
Beach, which features nightly sunset masterpieces
and regular whale sightings.
Conveniently located near all of these
Central Coast gems is Sun RV Resort’s newest
development, Cava Robles RV Resort. Surrounded
by protected oak trees and hillsides,
Cava Robles offers 300 motor coach sites and
20 freestanding cottage-inspired vacation rentals.
Visitors can take advantage of the breathtaking
landscape in a pampered environment,
enjoying resort amenities such as a wellness
centre, Jacuzzi spa, banquet facilities, swimming
pools and a bistro. Visitors will enjoy concerts,
on-site wine tasting, nature walks, and shuttles
to nearby wineries and events. If you’re looking
to escape those brisk winter winds, give them a
call at (844) 377-9916 and plan your getaway
to Cava Robles RV Resort today.
For travellers, the lure of California stems
from its variety – its diverse topography, rich
history, and mix of culture and entertainment.
The weather’s not too bad, either.
By Napa Valley, Photos from Napa Valley Bike Tours /movaphoto.com
Napa Valley’s year-round fair weather and long stretches of roadside wineries make it the
ideal place to explore by bicycle. Biking is an excellent alternative to wine tasting by car
because it offers the chance to slow down, revel in the fresh valley air, and truly appreciate
wine country’s gorgeous scenery. If you’re looking for a guided wine tasting adventure,
here are our picks for the best winery bike tours in Napa Valley.
THE CLASSIC NAPA VALLEY BIKE TOUR
Napa Valley Bike Tours
(707) 251-TOUR
Single day
Meet at 6500 Washington Street in Yountville
Perched atop your late-model Specialized
Sirrus or Vita hybrid bike, you’ll cruise along
behind a friendly and knowledgeable guide on
this signature valley wine tour. Cycling tours
pass through some of the region’s most notable
wineries including Andretti Winery and
the first winery on the Silverado Trail, Luna
Vineyards. Though final itineraries are set five
to six days in advance, you can contact the
office before your visit to make sure that none
of the wineries you have already visited will
be duplicated during your ride. Enjoy a fresh
catered picnic lunch at a winery, overlooking
the vineyards.
BIKING IN THE VINEYARDS
Napa Valley Bike Tours
(707) 251-TOUR
Single day
Meet at 1233 Stanly Lane, just south of the
stoplight intersection at Hwy 12/121
This tour takes you right into the middle of
the action, as you head off-road on your bike
straight through the vineyards themselves.
Travel between each vineyard is only about
three to six kilometres (two to four miles),
so you’ll get a workout without working up a
major sweat. Because this off-road tour can be
a bit rugged, the fitness level required on this
tour is a little higher than those that require
street riding, so speak with your tour guide
before pushing off if you feel like you’ll be
unable to keep up. The itinerary changes but
others who have taken this ride have toured
Markham Vineyards and Benessere Vineyards.
Roosevelt Lake
One approach is to break Arizona into sections
where you can stop and focus on the
beauty of a specific area. Then you can choose
whether you want to immerse yourself in the
dusty work of finding old pottery chards, hiking
through rugged canyons, feeling the serenity
that comes from gently paddling across a glassy
lake or simply sitting back in your chair and
enjoying the view from your campsite.
Arizona can be partitioned in many ways—
but here’s an arbitrary slice that delivers the
need to be outdoors and to discover in a very
personal way, what it is like to feel the ground
A Slice of
ARIZONA
MARY TAYLOR
Arizona is a large enough state that it takes a long time to explore in a recreational vehicle. When
you add activities like hiking, kayaking, biking, and looking for artifacts, you’ll soon discover that
you just don’t have enough time to do it all at once.
under your feet, to pick up pottery chards or to
see how people lived over 800 years ago.
This arbitrary slice is about 217 km (135
miles) long. It’s a diagonal section that runs
north-northwest between Tucson and stops
short of Payson. You could drive it in a single
day, but the best way is to take a week or two.
START WITH THESE THREE AREAS:
If you want to begin with natural beauty and
hiking, try the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area
nestled in the foothills of the southern Catalina
Mountains near Tucson. In the winter the
canyon will be green with saguaro cactus, palo
verde trees dotting the hills, and Mexican blue
oaks filling the canyons along Sabino Creek,
which is fed by melted snow from Mt. Lemmon.
The whole Sabino area offers a stark contrast
to the dry desert terrain that it overlooks.
There are several hiking trails in and around
Sabino and Bear Canyons with the Blacketts
Ridge Trail being one of the steepest with a 550
m (1,800 ft) gain. If you are more interested
in sightseeing, you can hop on the tram for a
narrated ride up the canyon road. Of course,
picnicking, cycling and wildlife viewing are
other ways to fill your time. The Sabino Canyon
Volunteer Naturalists offer an interpretation
program called Walks, Hikes, and Demos with
programs for all ages.
Be sure to drive a smaller vehicle to the Sabino
Canyon Recreation Area as there is no onsite
RV parking or camping. Don’t bother bringing
Fido either, since dogs are not permitted.
Your second stop would be Catalina State
Park which is about 32 km (20 miles) north of
Tucson via Oracle Road. The campground has
two major loops, plus the Ringtail Loop, which is
more like overflow parking. The two larger loops
offer electricity and showers. If you are hauling a
horse trailer, there is also an equestrian centre.
After settling in you can take advantage
of several gentle hiking trails or the Romero
Ruins Interpretive Trail, a well-presented
former Hohokam Indian settlement from 500
AD to 1450 AD. Depending on when you are
there, you might be fording or rock hopping
Sutherland Wash to take advantage of trails
and the historical site. The trailhead, which has
adequate parking, is just down the road from
the campground and leads to longer and more
challenging trails such as the Sutherland Trail,
50-Year Trail and eventually the Mt. Lemmon
Trail. Some of the trails in this area are open to
Kayaking on Roosevelt Lake
horses and mountain bikes.
Moving northward along this 217 km (135
miles) diagonal you will find the third area that
offers the chance to hike, fish, boat or explore
historical sites. It is the small section of the
three million-acre Tonto National Forest, which
contains the Theodore Roosevelt Lake and the
cliff dwellings of the Tonto National Monument
and is located only about 130 km (80 miles)
northeast of Phoenix and 48 km (30 miles)
north of Globe.
Historically the Salt River flowed through
this valley providing the Hohokam Indians the
water they needed for their numerous large
villages and related farming. The Hohokam,
who were accomplished farmers, craftsmen,
and traders, originally settled about 1,000
years ago but then vanished sometime in the
1400’s. During that time they had created several
hundred kilometres of irrigation ditches
to better disperse the water. Several new cultures
arose after the Hohokam with the best
known being the Salado of Tonto Basin. After
generations of drought, warfare and floods
the Salado also left. Their descendants are the
Pima, Hopi, and Zuni tribes.
you can simply find a dirt road and camp most
anywhere along the lake’s shoreline. As the
Southwestern states have been in the midst of a
multi-year drought don’t expect high waterlines.
In fact, you may find some of the concrete
boat launches ending well above the waterline.
Typically, the various dirt roads have become
the new launching spots.
Roosevelt Lake has good fishing for bass,
catfish, sunfish, and flathead. Kayaking, paddle
boarding, and water skiing all provide excuses
for accidental submersion in the water on a hot
summer day.
The Arizona Trail (not to be confused with
the Apache Trail Road) is the hiking trail that
crosses Arizona north to south. The Vineyard
Trail that serves as a short section of the Arizona
Trail, is an 8 km (5 miles) maintained hiking
trail along the lake, which starts just west of
the dam and climbs the cactus-covered hills. It
provides excellent views of the Salt River Valley
and the Apache Trail. On one segment of this
trail, we found numerous pottery shards and
remnants of Indian habitation from long ago.
Arizona Trail sign
The jumbled rocks which had once formed
walls in their villages are scattered over mutliple
hilltops. Naturally, given this is a National
Monument, there can be no gathering of archeological
artifacts.
A highlight of the Roosevelt Lake area is the
cliff dwelling sites in the Tonto National Monument.
These Salado sites date from the 1200’s
and are accessible by visiting the Monument
Visitor Center near Windy Hill Campground.
Salado cliff dwellings.
The site nearest the Center can be reached by
a relatively short trail and is open daily to all
visitors. There is also a guided tour of the larger
site that requires a 2.4 km (1.5 mile) uphill hike.
The sophistication of the design and construction
of the upper site is surprising if you haven’t
already explored the numerous cliff dwelling
sites in the Southwest. Both sites are free, but
it is necessary to sign up for the guided tour,
which is limited to 16 people.
ONE MORE OPPORTUNITY
If you are looking for one more experience in
this area, you can drive on the narrow, partially
paved Highway 88, aka the Apache Trail Road.
It is 68 km (42 miles) long and links Apache
Junction to Lake Roosevelt. As described by
americansouthwest.net it is a “steep, winding
and mostly unpaved road past magnificent scenery
of twisted igneous mountains with dense
forests of saguaro and ferocactus and several
deep blue lakes.”
The road’s history is fascinating. It started as
a migration trail used by the Apaches, then was
used for building the Roosevelt Dam, and eventually
became a tourist route and renamed the
Apache Trail Road. The eastern portion is still
not paved, contains narrow sections and sharp
turns and isn’t recommended for large RVs.
If you do decide to test the road, you should
stop at Tortilla Flats for its entertainment value.
Some say it began as a stagecoach stop. It did
evolve into a 120-person town while the dam
was being built, and today has a restaurant/ gift
shop, and a small museum in an old schoolhouse,
as well as the requisite ice cream for a
hot day’s drive.
After discovering the amount to be seen and
experienced in that mere 217 km (135 miles)
you might want to break it into a couple of trips.
Of course, if all that action seems like too much,
feel free to omit some of the activities and just
give yourself time to sit outside your rig with a
cold drink and a really good book.
Hi Tech
Get Your RV Water System
READY FOR SPRING
From O’Connor RV
If you’ve had your RV in storage over the winter, spring is the time to flush your RV fresh
water tank. After winterizing – you must de-winterize – meaning you need to make sure your water
system is clean before putting in fresh water. You will soon be using this system for drinking and
cooking, so it’s crucial to follow these steps so that your first RV trip is safe and enjoyable.
1
If you’ve stored your RV for the winter
using anti-freeze, it will have to be thoroughly
flushed out. (Note: The anti-freeze
you use in RV water systems is not the same
as what radiators use). Flushing your water
system is not too complicated.
2
Start by hooking your clean water hose
to your water source and connect the
other end to your RV’s water intake. Open
your gray tank and turn on all the taps. Let
the water run until it looks and tastes clean.
If your gray tank is not hooked to the sewer,
you will need to connect to another drainage
system, like a gutter or a bucket.
3
Complete the same process with your
holding tank. Turn the pump on and run
several tank-fulls of water through it to flush any
antifreeze entirely out of the tank and pipes.
If there is residual antifreeze in the tank,
you should dissolve a box of baking soda in a
bucket of water and pour it down the drains.
Let it sit for at least two hours.
DISINFECTING YOUR WATER SYSTEMS
If you didn’t winterize your RV with antifreeze,
you should still clean and purify your
water system. Some forms of mildew and
mold can be poisonous, so it is crucial to
complete this step.
Add 235 ml (1 cup) of liquid bleach for
every 75-110 L (20-30 gal) of water. Flush
this through your system and let it sit for
about two hours. (Don’t let it sit for too long
as although bleach cleans well, it can also
disintegrate parts of the system).
Bleach is highly effective in killing
bacteria, so you can feel assured your water
will be safe for drinking once it is flushed
through thoroughly. If you can still smell or
taste the bleach, use the baking soda solution
technique suggested above.
If you follow these steps at home before
your first spring trip, you can enjoy your trip
instead of worrying about completing the
task at the campground.
If you don’t feel safe completing these steps
yourself, your favourite RV technician would
be happy to help.
How To
Patio Room
INSTALLATION
Story and Photos By Tina Hoffman and John McCabe
Ring with downpole.
WELCOME
To Our New
HOW-TO
Series
Semicircular ring.
One of the smartest moves that we made with our
motorhome was to install a patio room. We purchased
a gazebo, before getting the patio room,
and it had a lot of problems. We had enough of
those issues after pieces of the gazebo broke off
during a storm (when the wind wasn’t even strong).
Maybe we just purchased a defective $500 gazebo,
but we decided to go with the extra room attached
to our RV rather than chance another gazebo failure.
We chose the Dometic Patty O’Room (also called
the Veranda Room). We were very apprehensive
about getting a patio room because my daughter
and I aren’t the most mechanically inclined, but
as we assembled it, we learned that it’s similar to
putting up a tent and we had it up within a few
hours. We found it much better than the gazebo for
many reasons; it keeps the heat off the RV (and the
Ground Fault Interrupter in the kitchen) in the summer,
you can install closets, get changed in privacy,
keep your bicycles safe and so much more!
We measured our awning at 5 metres (16 ft),
which meant that we had to get the starter package
(935008.120) plus the door (935000.140) and
one extra panel of just over one metre in length
(935004.120). It can be confusing, so you should
check with your supplier when placing your order.
Let them know how wide your awning is and how
high you want your patio room to be, and they
should be able to help.
Start with your awning fully extended and about
2.5 metres high (unless you ordered the tall room,
which is around 4 metres (13 ft) tall.) First install the
black plastic semi-circular thing (Dometic calls it a
“pole holder”) by sliding it down to the far end (at
the front of the RV). If you have a pull-strap, slide
it all the way to the front of the RV as well. Don’t
remove it as you may never find it again (trust me).
Keep it to the outside of where your patio room will
be.
Next, install the down-pole into the bottom
hole of the pole holder. This is the hole that points
straight down. Make sure that it’s as tall and tight as
you can get it. At this point, you have a decision to
make. Do you want to be able to open the windows
from the inside or the outside? We asked a lot of
people, and the consensus seems to be to leave the
openings inside for the rainy season so that rainwater
runs down the outside of your patio. Otherwise,
you can do whatever you want (but it is best to have
them all face the same way).
Next, you run the shower-curtain-rod-type thing
through the front side-panel. Then, stick the pointy
end of the curtain rod into the upper hole of the
pole holder and the rubber part up near the top of
your RV. Again, make sure it’s tight against the RV.
Also, get that end as high as you can, so that the
pole is parallel to the awning arm. You can make this
step easier by installing four of the “twist fasteners”
by screwing them strategically into your RV (in a
60 SNOWBIRDS & RV TRAVELERS February/March 2018
straight line from top to bottom and directly under
the pole that your panel will go on). If this is your
RV’s first patio room, you will need to install them
by drilling a 3mm pilot hole and then screwing
them in. Slide the plastic pieces (called poly rope
clips, but that doesn’t make any sense) onto the
edge of the panel and attach them to the twist
fasteners. Just estimate where they’ll go – you can
adjust them later. Right now, you’re just making it
easier to get the pole up there.
Clips.
Start sliding.
Slide all the way to the end.
Slide large panel.
Hint: If your “curtain rod” poles are a bit short (as
ours were), cut off a piece of broomstick (we used a
section about 75mm) and stick it inside.
You will install the door, main panel and any extra
panels next (one at a time) by sliding them into the
rear of the roller part of your awning and sliding
them to the front. Align the first one (which should
probably be your door, but it doesn’t have to be) to
the front panel and so on.
When the door and other panels are finished,
install the rear panel the same way that you installed
the front. Remember to lighten your load by
installing the twist fasteners and sliding the clips to
meet them. Check all of the zippers to make sure
that they work. You will have just two more steps.
First, take the stakes and secure your patio room to
the ground. We’ve had to test this once, as there
was a terrible windstorm while we were away. That
was the last time our gazebo stood, but the patio
held up perfectly!
Finally, you need to install the skirt. The skirt will
prevent any unwanted creatures from getting into
your patio room and cut down on the wind. It will
also make the patio look better. Place the twist
fasteners in a straight line along the bottom of
the rig. Start by drilling one at the very front and
one at the very rear. Pull the skirting taut and cut it
about 8-10 cm (3-4 inches) longer. You will need to
cut it, as it is about 7½ metres wide. After you cut
that, drill the rest of the holes (count the number
of twist fasteners that you still have). Rather than
drilling a hole in the fiberglass wheel wells, potentially
cracking them, use the supplied “hook and
loop fasteners.” Also, you’ll have to cut around
the steps. Dometic recommends cutting it 6mm
wider than the widest step. Try to cut downward as
little as necessary; that way, you will still have your
rodent and wind protection.
Very Important! Make sure that you don’t start the
RV’s engine at ANY TIME if the exhaust points in
this direction – especially if it’s diesel. If you need
to run your rig at some time, remember to remove
the skirting and open all the panels.
