Not many of us really take a step back to see that story in its entirety, but it can be very useful and even therapeutic to do so. Sometimes a story clarifies a gray-area value or belief we’ve been pondering on. Sometimes a story exemplifies how we no longer want to be as a person. Reviewing our own story puts things into perspective; it’s as simple as that. Here are a couple ideas on how to begin: JOURNALING I started a business journal a few years ago and revisit it every time I experience a slump. Many times we live in cycles, and what cycle I’m in today may be similar to what I experienced in 2014. I bet I learned something from that experience that could help me today. I have two to three journaling Word documents on my desktop at all times. Today, I have one about a yoga challenge where I’m posing in Warrior II every day for 40 days. Since we’re entering a new year, I also have one about reflection. Whatever the situation, it’s very helpful to jot down your thoughts, ideas, and plans to improve your understanding of what’s going on with you personally and professionally. NARRATIVE THERAPY Telling someone your own story is a form of therapy that’s been around for a long time. Entrusting intimate details with someone else can be a bit scary, but it’s also very enlightening. For example, when you vent to your mother about an issue at work, don’t you feel a little bit better about it? Getting thoughts out of your head (where they quickly turn negative) can be therapeutic on any scale. Venting and gossiping are two different things, in my opinion: »» Letting out your feelings and frustration = venting. »» Blaming those feelings and frustration on others for x, y, and z reasons = gossiping. Stories are powerful on the receiving end as well. An inspiring story can get people involved or connect people that wouldn’t otherwise be connected. Stories can get us motivated to pursue a specific career journey, muddle us up in the middle, and ultimately guide us to find the path we’re meant to walk.
