Free Prom 2016
The organizers of the
Free Prom 2016, would
like to thank the following
supporters:
The free prom was set up 3 years ago by me, Scott Collins. Starting this year, we had a committee consisting of
myself and some of the parents of the attendees. We are at this time trying to organize, to become a nonprofit in
time for our Free Prom 2017, which at this time, is already in the planning stages. The Free Prom is a way for
kids between grades 9-12, or up 20 years old, who did not have a chance to go to a school prom or who are home
schooled or just simply could not afford to go, to have a chance. The cost for prom is almost $100.00 per couple
not including dinner and hair do’s and extras. With the free prom, the dress code is Sunday best unless you wish to
be formal, in which case, we find or are donated, dresses, shoes, suits etc, to help the kids/parents with the cost of
dressing up. The guest receives a free limo ride to the event from a designated drop off location (usually one of our
sponsor’s parking lots.) The female guests receive a red carnation or flower, donated by a local florist, then all the
guest get professional pictures, along with food and drink (heavy Hors d’oeuvres). Then they dance the night away
to the latest music by a local DJ that ONLY PLAYS CLEAN VERSIONS of today’s most popular hits from rock
to country. If it doesn’t have a clean version, it isn’t played. If they are over 18 and smoke, they are not allowed to
smoke during the event. Also, there are always several chaperones on hand and security provided by the Elizabeth
City Police Department, as they have an officer that comes by about every 15 mins to make sure there are no
problems. All guest are identified by wristbands and no wristband means no entry. When the event is over, the
guest is escorted out by a chaperon to the responsible person picking them up. We encourage parents to drop
by and check out the event so they can feel comfortable with entrusting their kids to our care for the night. The
residents of Virginia Dare Apartments also get in on the fun for the evening as they are designated as door people,
registration/check in person, or just an extra hand to chaperone. The chaperones and staff of the event wear badges
stating “Event Staff” to ensure they can be sought out easily in the event there is any issue. Our sponsors include
those we have listed along with local businesses and private individuals who wish to remain anonymous.
