Shaievitz commits to St. Anselm’s
By Anne Marie Tobin
LYNNFIELD — Lynnfield
High senior Lizzie Shaievitz
made it official last Thursday.
Surrounded by family and
friends, Shaievitz signed a national
letter of intent to play
women’s soccer for the Division
II St. Anselm College Hawks.
“Soccer has been my sport
my entire life and I knew all
along that I really wanted it to
be soccer,” said Shaievitz, who
plans on majoring in nursing.
“Last year I started talking to
coaches and St. A’s was right up
at the top after I went and visited
it and just fell in love with the
campus. I wanted two things -
a strong nursing program and a
location fairly close to home. I
just felt that it was the right fit
for me.”
Shaievitz, a 2-year soccer
and basketball captain, earned
four varsity letters in soccer at
Lynnfield and was a two-year
starter.
While her final season last
fall was cut short after learning
that she had a broken femur, the
season ended on a high note when
she earned Cape Ann League
Kinney Division Player of the
Year honors as well as Division
3 North Player of the Year, and
Eastern Massachusetts All-Star
and All-State honors.
She finished the season with
13 goals and four assists despite
missing the final five games.
“She played hurt for the
second half of the season but it
was a big loss when she was shut
down,” said Lynnfield coach
Mark Vermont. “I have no doubt
that she would have made a difference
against Newburyport (in
the North quarterfinals), she just
is so fast that it’s nearly impossible
to game plan against her.
The injury was devastating to
her yet she continued to come to
every practice and game and lead
from the sidelines.
“She even scored a goal in the
last game she played (against
Pentucket).
Liz Shaievitz signs a letter of intent to play soccer at St. Anselm College. With her are, from left, her mother
Christine, sister Sophia, athletic director Michael Bierwirth, Shaievitz and father Barry.
Even at less than 100 percent,
she just had a nose for the ball,
and she will be a strong contributor
at St. Anselm. For her to put
up the numbers she did in only 15
games was impressive.”
Shaievitz, who was elected to
the National Honor Society as a
junior, was cleared to play basketball
in early January, but is out for
the season after the injury flared
up recently.
“I got cleared and it felt good,
but I knew something wasn’t
right,” she said.
“I probably came back too
early. Hopefully it will feel better
in the next month so I can back
training with my club team (the
Aztecs), doing some running and
lifting so I can be ready for my
summer workout program.”
As far as expectations go,
Shaievitz said she intends to approach
her first year of college
“I am just going to go in and
give it my best, the same way it
was in Lynnfield where you had
to work for everything you get,”
she said. “I am perfectly ready
to do that in college. If anything,
that will push me to be a better
player and that will be good for
me.”
If her freshman year at St.
Anselm is anything like her
freshman year at Lynnfield High,
it will be an exciting season for
Shaievitz.
“It was just crazy my freshman
year as I never could have imagined
that we would go that far
and play in a state championship
game, that was definitely the
highlight of my four years here,
my best moment,” said Shaievitz.
“Just being able to go and play in
that game was so cool. Nipmuc
was so incredibly good and it was
just such a great experience.”
Vermont says Shaievitz is more
than just a good soccer player.
“It always says a lot about a
person when your team votes you
captain, let alone for two years,
but she was deserving and is just
a great person,” Vermont said.
“You can see by the way she interacts
with and adores her little
sister Sophie and usually you
don’t see that special interaction
when it comes to a senior who
is busy with her own life and a
second grader, but Lizzie genuinely
cares about people.
“She was a little nervous and
quiet her first year, but then grew
out of her shell sophomore year,
and turned out to be a tremendous
person and a great leader. I hope
her injury gets resolved and she
can get back to focusing on soccer
as I know she will be a huge asset
to any team.”
