Spotlighters of Lynnfield announce annual scholarship The Spotlighters of Lynnfield have announced the Catherine Ruby McGrath Theater Scholarship. The scholarship is open to all seniors who are interested and active in any aspect of theater, music, or band. Catherine Ruby McGrath was a child dance performer in the 1920s in the Chicago area. She studied with Helen Emma Reaume Power, a wellknown dramatist and Shakespearean actress who was the mother of Tyrone Power, one of the most popular male stars in Hollywood from the late 1930s until his death in 1954. Catherine later performed at many nightclubs and theaters in the Midwest before finally retiring to raise six children in upstate New York, where she worked in real estate and as a portrait artist. She passed away in 1996 at the age of 77. Two of Catherine Mc- Grath’s grandchildren, Eric and Bobby Curran, have performed in the past in numerous Spotlighters productions. Applications for the scholarship can be picked up at the Lynnfield High School guidance office. The deadline for applying is Wednesday, April 11. Applications must be returned to the guidance office. FEBRUARY 15, 2018 WEEKLYNEWS.NET - 978-532-5880 5 Lynnfield native to lead Combined Jewish Philanthropies Rabbi Marc Baker Find our Pets of the week and others at neas.org Rabbi Marc Baker, a Lynnfield native, has been selected incoming president and CEO of Combined Jewish Philanthropies, Boston’s largest nonprofit. Baker, head of school at Gann Academy in Waltham for the past 11 years, will succeed Barry Shrage, who will be stepping down in June, after holding the organization’s top leadership position for more than 30 years. The selection follows an extensive, eight-month search conducted by CJP’s President Search Committee, co-chaired by Shira Goodman, CEO of Staples Inc., and Aron Ain, CEO of Kronos Inc., in partnership with Spencer Stuart, an international executive search firm. “I have witnessed firsthand just how vital CJP is to our Boston Jewish community, and I am honored to be able to continue that crucial work alongside its valued staff and supporters, many of whom I’ve been fortunate to work with before,” said Baker. “I look forward to building on the strong foundation Barry has established for CJP, serving as a champion for Boston’s Jewish community and for Israel, working to engage our next generation, and collaborating with a vibrant, diverse and inclusive Jewish Greater Boston.” Baker is well known as a leader and teacher in the Boston Jewish community and throughout the country. His responsibilities will include continuing to work with CJP’s partner agencies and institutions to build upon the Boston Jewish community’s current endeavors, developing new programs and partner relationships within Boston and beyond, engaging the overall community, and spearheading the implementation of CJP’s strategic plan. “We are excited to welcome Marc and could not be more optimistic about CJP’s future under his leadership,” said Neil Wallack, chairman of CJP’s Board of Directors. “He understands the many ways in which the Jewish community and philanthropy are evolving and has a strong vision for CJP’s future that will engage a wide audience.” Baker attended Phillips Academy in Andover and then Yale University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in religious studies and was captain of the varsity squash team. After graduating from Yale, he spent four years in Israel at the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem as the recipient of a Dorot Fellowship and pioneer of the Pardes Educators Program. While in Israel, Baker also received his master’s degree in Jewish Education from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and was ordained a rabbi in 2004 by the director and Rosh Yeshiva of the Pardes Institute. From 2002-2006, Baker served An OPEN LETTER to Town of Lynnfield Residents We want to express our sincere thanks for the opportunity to appear recently before Lynnfield’s Board of Selectmen and Planning Board, and nearly 100 Lynnfield residents who came to the Gaslight Restaurant at Market Street. Those who attended these three meetings heard us describe our proposal to build a residential community for adults 55 and over among the first nine holes on the east side of the Sagamore Spring Golf Club. Since 1929, this land has been owned by the Luff and Strobel/Thompson families and the Sagamore Spring Real Estate Trust. We’ve taken great pride in preserving this property, providing what we believe is a true recreational gem in Lynnfield. In order to retain the golf course for the enjoyment of everyone, we studied several options on how to best develop the vacant land around the golf course. We are proposing a plan that we sincerely believe will provide much needed housing for Lynnfield residents 55 and older and also provide tax revenue for the Town in a manner that would allow us to preserve the natural beauty of the land. Our team believes that our proposal to rezone this property to accommodate housing for adults 55 and older warrants the Town’s approval at the April 30th Town Meeting for the following reasons: 1. COMMUNITY LAND PLAN: We have presented a land plan that is sensitive to the natural beauty of the property and complements the character of the surrounding neighborhoods. This plan allows the Sagamore Spring Golf Club to remain open to the public. A tunnel will be built under Main Street for golf and maintenance cart crossing and a brand new clubhouse is proposed to be built. 2. FINANCIAL BENEFITS TO LYNNFIELD: Once completed, residents in our proposed community will contribute approximately $1.8 million annually in property taxes to the Town. This revenue stream will come to the Town without asking for anything in return because the roadways behind the gates of our 55+ community will be privately maintained and no children under the age of 18 will reside in these homes. 3. EXPERIENCE: As a national award-winning developer and builder of lifestyle communities, I am honored that Richard and his family selected our company, Bonvie Homes, to build what we believe will be the most desirable lifestyle community on the North Shore. My experience in developing and building adult lifestyle communities is evident in what I have accomplished at Southport in Mashpee which Where to Retire Magazine twice named one of the “Top 100 Master-planned Communities in America.” In addition to these 750 homes, I have built or developed 1,400 more homes throughout eastern Massachusetts during my 47 years in the business. 4. HOME DESIGNS: Our townhomes are designed with aging in place in mind and specifically suited for the active adult lifestyle. The homes will feature first floor master suites, open living space, ample storage and two-car attached garages. We strive to be the best and would bring our best to Lynnfield if given the opportunity to build here too. Our Hyannisport-style home in Southport was recognized by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) as the “Best Home Design in America.” Last month, we won NAHB’s 2018 Gold Award for “Best Active Adult Community in America – on the Boards” for the new active adult community we are starting this Spring in Winchester. We look forward to meeting many more Lynnfield residents at the public information sessions that we will host in the weeks ahead, leading up to the April 30th Town Meeting. Dates and times of these meetings will be posted on our website, www.bonvieliving.com and advertised in local newspapers. We encourage you to join us, express your support or your concerns, and allow us to answer any questions you might have regarding our proposal. As a team we are deeply committed to earning the trust of the residents of Lynnfield. With your support, we will build a community that will provide financial resources to the Town and much needed housing for residents 55 and over.
