Phillips Landing Resident Soars to New Heights

Phillips Landing resident John 

C. Lewe IV always had a fascination 

for aviation. After his parents divorced 

when John was 6 years old, 

the Chicago native and his mother 

moved to South Africa for several 

years. 

“I loved flying across the oceans 

on the big 747s,” he said. “Back 

then, kids were allowed to visit with 

the pilots up in the cockpit. Seeing 

all of that really sparked an interest 

in me.” 

In 1997, John began taking flying 

lessons. After 12.7 hours of in-air 

training, he flew his first solo flight. 

“My instructor and I had been 

working on ‘touch and go’s’ in which 

you land without fully stopping, then 

throttle up and take off again. We 

had done that about 12 times that 

day. Then my instructor said, ‘Stop 

in the middle of the runway, and 

let me out.’ I was nervous, but I just 

pretended he was still sitting next to 

me, which helped me stay calm and 

focused. It was incredibly exciting!” 

After 80 hours of training, John received 

his pilot’s license. 

Shortly after the birth of their 

daughter, Kate, in 2000, John and 

his wife decided to move to Orlando. 

The devoted father and software 

company entrepreneur stopped flying 

for nearly 15 years. In 2015, 

John felt ready to pick it back up. He 

attended a flight school at Orlando 

Executive Airport, where he eventually 

got back up to speed with his 

flying skills.

“It took a while just to get familiar 

with the area,” he said. “Central 

Florida has a lot of great airports 

and lots of air space.” 

John currently owns a Cessna 172, 

a small four-person aircraft. He enjoys 

flying all over the state with his 

wife and daughter.

Florida from above was really neat,” 

he said. “Each airport is unique. 

Some of the runways are really short, 

which requires you to come in slower 

and lower.”

“I can usually plan for a Saturday 

flight just a few days beforehand,” 

he said. “I’ll check the weather, 

come up with a flight plan, and that 

weekend I’m in the air.” 

John’s favorite airport is the Albert 

Whitted Airport near St. Petersburg. 

“I’m able to fly in, fuel up at the onsite 

FBO [fixed base operator], then 

head up to the second floor where 

there is a great restaurant with a balcony,” 

he said. “My wife and I like to 

fly there, have lunch, then fly back. 

I don’t usually stay at my destination 

very long, because for me, the fun 

part of the trip is being in the air.”

“It is restricted air space, so you 

need to get special permission to fly 

there. I was not allowed to land but 

was able to do a flyover at about 

200 feet above the runway.” 

As for the future, John hopes to explore 

air space beyond the state of 

Florida, including the Bahamas. 

“That would be exciting because 

it would involve flying outside of the 

U.S.” 

He also plans to “continue gaining 

experience, becoming better 

acquainted with other local 

pilots, and continue getting to 

know the Florida air space.” ª

Carrozzella changed his

A Gainesville native, Carolyn Knopfle, ARNP, stayed in her hometown to attend the 

University of Florida, where she earned a bachelor’s in public relations. She then went 

on to earn a bachelor’s in nursing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 

She returned to Florida and worked as a registered nurse in the Neuro Intensive Care 

Unit at UF Health Shands Hospital. While she loved the fast pace of the hospital and

5K/10K Run Among the Lakes will 

be held April 14. The course runs 

along the Butler Chain of Lakes under 

a canopy of old oaks. All finishers receive 

a wine opener/stopper medal

Dr. Phillips High School’s 

women’s wrestling team won its 

second straight state championship. 

DPHS scored 305 points in the championship, 

nearly doubling the total of 

second-place Osceola High School, 

to complete an exceptional season, 

including a 9-0 dual meet record, 

championships in eight invitational 

tournaments, 15 state place-winners, 

and five individual state champions.

At the Florida High School Athletic 

Association State Championship 

in Gainesville, DPHS competitive 

cheerleading delivered a stunning 

performance in both the semifinal 

and championship rounds of the 

small varsity division to capture the 

state runner-up trophy for the third 

time in school history. The Panthers 

finished third in the Regional 

Championship, which qualified 

them for the state competition, but 

they had to perform twice. Their first 

performance was flawless, sending 

them into the final round, where they 

placed second overall, just 2 points 

shy of the winning team. The squad 

has placed in the top two at the 

State Championship in eight of the 

past 10 years. Congratulations to 

head coach Samantha Hoffman 

for leading the team to another excellent 

showing. 

Holy Family Catholic School’s 

athletic director, Rese McNatt, 

was inducted to the Missouri State 

University Hall of Fame. McNatt was 

a three-year volleyball standout 

and two-year starter for the Bears. 

She was named to the Missouri 

Valley Conference all-league first 

team during both her junior and 

senior campaigns. She led MSU 

with 390 kills as a senior to rank 

among the school’s 20 best all-time 

seasons in that category. Coach 

Melissa Stokes’ Bears were 74- 

26 in McNatt’s three seasons and 

finished second once and third twice 

in Missouri Valley Conference tournament 

play. McNatt played professional 

volleyball for 13 seasons 

in seven different countries after 

graduating from MSU. She retired 

from professional volleyball in 2016 

before joining Holy Family Catholic 

School. 

Fifteen athletes ages 5-10 took 

their first “strokes” toward water 

polo stardom at the second annual 

Polar Bear Water Polo Tournament 

held at the YMCA Aquatic Center. 

First, the swimmers attended a clinic 

where they learned basic skills 

and rules, followed by a fun exhibition 

game. The YMCA of Central 

Florida Water Polo Club hosted 

the event to launch its Splashball 

League this spring, which will enable 

kids to play water polo by an 

adapted set of rules at their local 

YMCA. 

“Water polo builds on a child’s natural 

interest in water play,” said YCF 

head coach Andrew Gordon.
