SPOTLIGHT
The Sky’s the Limit
Phillips Landing Resident Soars to New Heights
by Karen Nimetz
29
Phillips Landing resident John
C. Lewe IV always had a fascination
for aviation. After his parents divorced
when John was 6 years old,
the Chicago native and his mother
moved to South Africa for several
years.
“I loved flying across the oceans
on the big 747s,” he said. “Back
then, kids were allowed to visit with
the pilots up in the cockpit. Seeing
all of that really sparked an interest
in me.”
In 1997, John began taking flying
lessons. After 12.7 hours of in-air
training, he flew his first solo flight.
“My instructor and I had been
working on ‘touch and go’s’ in which
you land without fully stopping, then
throttle up and take off again. We
had done that about 12 times that
day. Then my instructor said, ‘Stop
in the middle of the runway, and
let me out.’ I was nervous, but I just
pretended he was still sitting next to
me, which helped me stay calm and
focused. It was incredibly exciting!”
After 80 hours of training, John received
his pilot’s license.
Shortly after the birth of their
daughter, Kate, in 2000, John and
his wife decided to move to Orlando.
The devoted father and software
company entrepreneur stopped flying
for nearly 15 years. In 2015,
John felt ready to pick it back up. He
attended a flight school at Orlando
Executive Airport, where he eventually
got back up to speed with his
flying skills.
“It took a while just to get familiar
with the area,” he said. “Central
Florida has a lot of great airports
and lots of air space.”
John currently owns a Cessna 172,
a small four-person aircraft. He enjoys
flying all over the state with his
wife and daughter.
at all 102 public paved airports
in Florida.
“Seeing all the different areas of
Florida from above was really neat,”
he said. “Each airport is unique.
Some of the runways are really short,
which requires you to come in slower
and lower.”
John has also flown over the Shuttle
Landing Facility, which was used by
“I can usually plan for a Saturday
flight just a few days beforehand,”
he said. “I’ll check the weather,
come up with a flight plan, and that
weekend I’m in the air.”
John’s favorite airport is the Albert
Whitted Airport near St. Petersburg.
“I’m able to fly in, fuel up at the onsite
FBO [fixed base operator], then
head up to the second floor where
there is a great restaurant with a balcony,”
he said. “My wife and I like to
fly there, have lunch, then fly back.
I don’t usually stay at my destination
very long, because for me, the fun
part of the trip is being in the air.”
Recently, John reached an
aviation milestone by landing
daughter, Kate,
prepare for flight.
NASA’s Space Shuttle for landings
until the program ended in 2011.
“It is restricted air space, so you
need to get special permission to fly
there. I was not allowed to land but
was able to do a flyover at about
200 feet above the runway.”
As for the future, John hopes to explore
air space beyond the state of
Florida, including the Bahamas.
“That would be exciting because
it would involve flying outside of the
U.S.”
He also plans to “continue gaining
experience, becoming better
acquainted with other local
pilots, and continue getting to
know the Florida air space.” ª
Upon my death, won’t my children automatically inherit my
estate and if I have no children don’t my assets pass to my closest
living relatives making a Last Will and Testament or other forms
of estate planning unnecessary?
A: With or without a Last Will, in order for your assets to reach
your heirs or other beneficiaries, a probate court proceeding is
generally required to transfer your assets. An attorney must be
hired to petition the court to supervise disbursement of your
assets as directed by your Will or state law. To avoid probate you
should consider preparing a Revocable Living Trust to transfer
assets at your death.
Live Well & Be Happy
Florida Center for Hormones & Wellness offers life-changing treatments
Obviously, aging is a natural
process. Did you know that much
of aging is the body’s response to
hormonal decline? Shocking, isn’t it?
The body was made to mature into
a reproductive organism. Once that
season of life is complete, it will naturally
decline in hormones, and hormonal
decline is strongly associated
with and ultimately leads to a number
of diseases of aging. This is in
addition to the outward symptoms of
menopause and andropause (low-T).
Of course, staying active is part of
slowing the aging process; however,
bioidentical hormone replacement
can also reverse the toll time takes on
our bodies. Some older adults are
perfectly fine with the deterioration
of their youthful looks and tendencies.
But for those who want to age
more gracefully, Florida Center
for Hormones & Wellness
should be on your radar.
Bioidentical hormone replacement
therapy, a medically proven,
safe and extremely effective
treatment, can
restore hormonal levels.
Once restored, the aging
process can be slowed,
and the day-to-day, often
debilitating symptoms
of hormonal imbalance
can be reversed. When
hormones are restored to
their youthful levels, aging
is more graceful, healthy
and enjoyable. Balanced
hormones provide a full,
active, vital, vigorous,
healthy aging season.
Whereas the original
hormone therapy used synthetic
hormones to replace
those no longer regenerating
in the body, bioidentical
hormones are produced naturally.
Made from natural sources like plants,
bioidentical hormones work by mimicking
the body’s natural hormone
production.
“These bioidentical hormones will
not harm your body,” said Jody
Layne, chief operating officer at
Florida Center for Hormones &
Wellness. “They can only help. They
tonyrappa@capturevideo-photo.com
don’t stop your body from aging but
enhance optimal performance.”
PROMOTIONAL FEATURE
tonyrappa@capturevideo-photo.com
BHRT also helps keep the body’s
systems in balance and assists in
preventing heart disease and high
cholesterol.
The physician who oversees all
procedures at Florida Center for
Hormones & Wellness is John
Carrozzella, M.D., ABAARM,
FAARFM. He devotes his
practice to serving the needs
of patients with hormonal
deficiencies, sexual dysfunction,
nutritional imbalances,
autoimmune disorders and
a variety of cosmetic needs.
An orthopedic surgeon for
more than 25 years, Dr.
Carrozzella changed his
medical focus seven years
ago after a medical issue affected
his family.
Dr. Carrozzella’s wife had
serious preventative neck surgery
10 years ago. As she
recovered, her entire personality
and sense of well-being
changed within three days of
the operation. The diagnosis
for the 50-year-old woman
was nuclear onset menopause.
Menopausal changes usually take
place in women throughout a period
of months, but in this case, the patient
seemed to succumb to all the
symptoms overnight. After visiting a
series of doctors, the couple came
upon one who prescribed hormone
replacement therapy. It worked, and
Dr. Carrozzella decided to devote
the rest of his medical career to helping
women naturally optimize their
health as they age. Focusing his
interests on nontraditional medical
specialties, he obtained a master’s
degree in nutritional and metabolic
medicine from the University of South
Florida. He also became a diplomate
of the American Board of Anti-Aging
and Regenerative Medicine.
About 80 percent of women who
are patients at Florida Center for
Hormones and Wellness go there
for bioidentical hormone replacement
therapy. It can be administered
through creams, pills or a pellet inserted
under the skin.
The mission of the practice is to
“help patients feel refreshed, revitalized
and rejuvenated.” Once feeling
good is achieved, many women then
try some of the other looking-good
offerings at the center, which include
nonsurgical breast lifts, face-lifts and
treatments for hair loss.
Men also come to the center for
bioidentical hormone replacement
therapy as well as other wellness
and sexual health treatments. They
receive shots that kick start regeneration
of tissues, organs and blood
platelet replenishment. This procedure
is also available to women.
The professionals at Florida Center
for Hormones & Wellness want their
clients to “live well and be happy.”
right for you, complete the online survey at
With age comes the decline of hormone production by the organs in the body. Just
as vitamins and minerals decline with age, the organs in women and men alike produce
declining levels of hormones with age. These include estrogen, progesterone, testosterone,
thyroid hormones, growth hormone, melatonin, DHEA, brain hormones and the list
goes on. Replacement of hormones helps to maintain the health of the body’s organs,
while effectively treating numerous symptoms. The hormones used at Florida Center for
Hormones & Wellness are identical to the hormones the body makes. Florida Center
for Hormones strives to meet the ever-changing health needs of men and women. Its
staff focuses on the nontraditional medical specialties of hormone replacement, sexual
health and dysfunction, nonsurgical cosmetics, health and wellness, anti-aging and
integrative medicine. They firmly believe that the “quality of life” is an essential component
to any discussion about longevity. The team at Florida Hormones and Wellness is
exceptional and cares deeply about its patients. Through careful analysis of medical
history and diagnostic testing, John C. Carrozzella, M.D., ABAARM, FAARFM, is
able to develop and offer the best individualized treatment plan for each client based
on his or her needs and goals. Dr. Carrozzella is an advanced fellow of the American
Academy of Anti-Aging and Aesthetic Medicine, and a member of the International
Society for Sexual Medicine and the International Society for the Study of Women’s
Sexual Health. He and his team go the extra mile so that their patients can function
higher — physically, mentally and sexually. At Florida Center for Hormones & Wellness,
patients are not rushed, and their feelings and concerns become the staff’s concerns.
They take the time needed to help each patient achieve, or perhaps exceed, his or
her realistic goals through a customized care plan. The practice uses a compounding
pharmacy, giving the staff the ability to provide ingredients commonly found in massproduced
medications. This allows for accurate dosing, reduced side effects and ease
of administration. Some patients ask if they are safe taking hormones. The center’s
staff asks “How safe are you without your hormones?” The cells in a person’s brain,
heart, vessels, bones, skin, hair follicles and muscles all have receptors for hormones.
As hormone levels dwindle, these cells and tissues lose stimulation, leading to a rapid
decline and advancement of degenerative diseases. If a person would correct a vitamin
or mineral deficiency with bioidentical vitamins or mineral replacements, he/she should
consider replacing a declining hormone.
to the complete medical care of the nose, both functional and cosmetic. The
facility is located in Dr. Phillips, near Windermere, MetroWest, Hunter’s Creek and
them in a complete manner, achieving optimal functional and aesthetic outcomes.
Patients no longer need to find a separate specialist to deal with both cosmetic and
patients. Some come after experiencing unsatisfactory results elsewhere. Dr. Han was
educated and trained at Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania School
in leading professional plastic surgery and rhinology journals.
As men grow older, they may experience one or more age-related symptoms, such as low
testosterone or erectile dysfunction. These conditions are easily correctable with proper
treatment, and Olympia’s staff has the necessary expertise. In addition, being overweight
affects men and women of all ages, but there is hope. Medical weight loss is a safe, effective
way to lose weight. With medications like HCG and Sermorelin, tremendous success
is being enjoyed by many. Olympia has the largest lyophilization facility in the eastern
U.S., allowing HCG and Sermorelin to be compounded on-site, making it very cost-effective
and high-quality. The pharmacy compounds B-12, vitamin B complex and fat-burning
injections; topical medications such as pain, wound and bleaching creams; and other
dermatologic treatments. The pharmacy also compounds small-animal medications. These
compounds offer a safe, effective, easy-to-administer, inexpensive way for pets to get the
medications they need. Olympia Pharmacy is conveniently located at the intersection of
Turkey Lake and Conroy-Windermere roads, and next-business-day shipping is offered
throughout all of Central Florida. Physicians interested in touring the new facility can email
Olympia Compounding Pharmacy is a national leader in compounded medications.
Olympia opened a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility in June 2014. This new facility is also
registered as a Food and Drug Administration outsourcing facility. As one of only a few
outsourcing facilities in the state, Olympia can provide patient-specific prescriptions as well
as “office use” medications for physician offices, clinics and hospitals. The Compounding
Quality Act, which was signed into law in November 2013, stipulates that only an FDAregistered
outsourcing facility can provide “office use” medications. Outsourcing facilities
are held to a much higher standard of operation than traditional compounding pharmacies.
The pharmacists at Olympia have more than 30 years of experience in bringing patients
high-quality medications and excellent customer service. Patients can call to receive a free,
personal consultation about any of their specialty medications. Because one size does not
always fit all, Olympia’s experts consult with patients every day and help develop personalized,
custom regimens. Olympia is a national leader in women’s health and bioidentical
hormones. Bioidentical means the hormones that are used are an exact molecular match
to hormones produced by the body. This is a safe, effective way to bring a woman’s body
back into hormonal balance. Balanced hormones help women of all ages look and feel
younger, stay slimmer and have more energy. Men’s health is another Olympia specialty.
filled with events and surprises
that nourished the
body and soul. It began
with the Holy Family’s
annual open house,
giving prospective families
a behind-the-classroom-doors
tour of the
school.
There was also a
walkathon to raise
money for the Orphans
Rising Missions, field
day, crazy hair and
sock day, a talent show,
career day, students vs.
faculty volleyball game,
and a volunteer breakfast,
honoring all the
people who make every
event at HFCS possible.
One of the most anticipated
days of the week
was when the eighthgraders
“took over the
school.” The teens prepared
lessons for weeks
in advance so they

Dr. Phillips High School’s
women’s wrestling team won its
second straight state championship.
DPHS scored 305 points in the championship,
nearly doubling the total of
second-place Osceola High School,
to complete an exceptional season,
including a 9-0 dual meet record,
championships in eight invitational
tournaments, 15 state place-winners,
and five individual state champions.
Girls who took the individual state
championships were sophomore
Jessica Corredor, juniors Shania
Gowan and Amani Guzman,
freshman Aaliyah Hyacinthe, junior
Shedeline Ulysse and senior
Remy Vargas.
At the Florida High School Athletic
Association State Championship
in Gainesville, DPHS competitive
cheerleading delivered a stunning
performance in both the semifinal
and championship rounds of the
small varsity division to capture the
state runner-up trophy for the third
time in school history. The Panthers
finished third in the Regional
Championship, which qualified
them for the state competition, but
they had to perform twice. Their first
performance was flawless, sending
them into the final round, where they
placed second overall, just 2 points
shy of the winning team. The squad
has placed in the top two at the
State Championship in eight of the
past 10 years. Congratulations to
head coach Samantha Hoffman
for leading the team to another excellent
showing.
Holy Family Catholic School’s
athletic director, Rese McNatt,
was inducted to the Missouri State
University Hall of Fame. McNatt was
a three-year volleyball standout
and two-year starter for the Bears.
She was named to the Missouri
Valley Conference all-league first
team during both her junior and
senior campaigns. She led MSU
with 390 kills as a senior to rank
among the school’s 20 best all-time
seasons in that category. Coach
Melissa Stokes’ Bears were 74-
26 in McNatt’s three seasons and
finished second once and third twice
in Missouri Valley Conference tournament
play. McNatt played professional
volleyball for 13 seasons
in seven different countries after
graduating from MSU. She retired
from professional volleyball in 2016
before joining Holy Family Catholic
School.
Fifteen athletes ages 5-10 took
their first “strokes” toward water
polo stardom at the second annual
Polar Bear Water Polo Tournament
held at the YMCA Aquatic Center.
First, the swimmers attended a clinic
where they learned basic skills
and rules, followed by a fun exhibition
game. The YMCA of Central
Florida Water Polo Club hosted
the event to launch its Splashball
League this spring, which will enable
kids to play water polo by an
adapted set of rules at their local
YMCA.
“Water polo builds on a child’s natural
interest in water play,” said YCF
head coach Andrew Gordon.
“More kids in this age group are
playing water polo now than ever

The YMCA of Central Florida Water Polo Club hosts the second annual Polar Bear Water Polo
Tournament.
before, and they are getting in a big
head start since most athletes don’t
begin until high school.”
Getting to this point has taken a
lot of effort and cooperation among
local coaches, YMCA pool directors
www.SouthwestOrlandoBulletin.com x March 1 — 14, 2018 x 69
and USA Water Polo representatives.
YCF was awarded
more than $3,000
through a USA WP grant
program to purchase youthsized
equipment for new
programs. Another key to
the program’s success was
adopting the Splashball
format, which permits athletes
to use floats as needed
and prohibits contact.
Splashball will be offered
in the spring or summer
at the Aquatic Center and
Lake Nona, J. Douglas
Williams, Osceola and
Roper YMCAs.
The Spring Move60
Challenge, sponsored by
Florida Blue, has just begun.
Starting March 1, Central
Floridians are encouraged
to add more movement into their daily
lives. With the Move60 Challenge,
residents have more options to take
healthy steps, while also having accountability,
fun and the opportunity
to win great prizes.
“Move60 is a simple and fun way
to incorporate physical activity into
your day,” said Yamile Luna,
assistant vice president of Florida
Hospital Community Impact and
Volunteerism. “Whether it’s highimpact
cardio or a relaxing walk,
you get to decide what activities to
participate in. The most important
thing is to get up and get moving.
The best part is you can enlist your
friends, family or co-workers for
fellowship, healthier living and accountability
touch points along the
way.”
The Move60 Challenge is free,
and weekly prizes such as fitness
gear and movie and restaurant gift
certificates will be awarded for added
incentive. Participants can sign
up individually or recruit a team.
Each registered participant receives
a Move60 T-shirt and pedometer,
while supplies last.
