FA S H I O N Return of the mac AS THE PROMISE OF SPRING IS ON THE HORIZON AND THE CHILLY WEATHER BECOMES A - HOPEFULLY! - DISTANT MEMORY, IT’S TIME TO DITCH YOUR WINTER COAT IN FAVOUR OF A MORE LIGHTWEIGHT OPTION, SAY AMY NORBURY IT’S time to rejoice because the first signs of spring are here, meaning a return of warmer days and an end to the need to be bundled up in your winter woolies every time you leave the house. Your trusty winter coat has served you faithfully over the past few months, but as temperatures turn there’s room for a new kid on the outerwear block. There’s really only one piece that successfully bridges the gap between winter and spring, one that won’t leave you feeling underdressed on a chilly morning, or stifled when the sun starts to shine. We’re talking about the trench coat. The trench is undoubtedly a wardrobe classic; Burberry built a business on it, and it’s been worn by everyone from Jackie O to Rihanna. The trench knows no limits of occasion or season—and leaves room for designers to get creative. If the trench might have felt too classic for your tastes in the past, you’ll be pleased to hear that for SS18 it’s had a serious update, with designers offering a plethora of great twists on this staple. At Alexander McQueen, metallic-threaded rose embroidery and raw edges gave an elaborate feel, while at Céline, two trenches were combined together to form one cape-like coat. There was patchwork and deconstruction at Maison Margiela, and shredded fringing at Loewe - in short, anything goes as long as it’s not straightforward. While the high streets have follow suit, their spring trench coats are entirely more everyday wearable, and just different enough to give fashionistas the excuse to treat themselves to another one. Colour plays a huge role for SS18, with trench coats aplenty in both pastel shades and bright pops, while spring’s love affair with all things satin has also ventured into outerwear to offer a more glamorous take on the trench trend. If you’re sticking to a classic neutral - and you really can’t go wrong with beige, camel or khaki - then look out for embellishments such as added frills and elaborate button details, while for a more relaxed look opt for a non-belted mac.
