Wildwood Council approves design phase for Ward 5 park By JESSICA MESZAROS By this time next year, Wildwood residents might have another reason to head outdoors in Ward 5. At its Feb. 26 meeting, Wildwood’s City Council passed an ordinance approving a contract with St. Louis-based landscape architect Terraspec for the creation of design and engineering drawings to be used in the bidding process of a park planned for Ward 5. The contract also approves future construction services. The estimated cost and direct budget impact of the contract were listed as not to exceed $50,000. Demand for a Ward 5 park has spurred “... there’s always been an overwhelming amount of people who would want to see this park become a reality.” – Debra Smith McCutchen ongoing discussion within the city for over a decade, with serious efforts beginning around June 2011. “From having been a parent in the ward [and] from when I started to serve on the council, I started knocking on doors and was told by residents that they wanted a community park they could take their kids to and a place where subdivisions could get together to do social things,” Councilmember Debra Smith McCutchen said. McCutchen has lived in the area since 1996 and was appointed to serve as a Ward 5 councilmember in 2011. Although Ward 5 is the city’s smallest ward in terms of geographical size, the area is densely populated with about 1,000 households. The ward, located just north of the city’s Town Square area, also is home @WESTNEWSMAG WESTNEWSMAGAZINE.COM to the Villages at Brightleaf subdivision now under construction. “We have a lot of new families moving in with young children,” McCutchen said. “The lot sizes aren’t very big around here, so it’s not always the safest for little kids to play. The park would be a flat area with equipment for them.” One possible location for the park, which has been mentioned repeatedly, is near the terminus of Pond-Grover Loop Road. Previously, that location was dismissed due to its potential expansion to help accommodate the additional traffic from incoming neighborhoods. However, the road extension was voted down by the council after a tiebreak vote in August 2016. According to McCutchen, about $500,000 is budgeted for the park. The goal is for a design to be chosen and development to begin by late 2018. A few design elements already being discussed include designated play areas for preschool and elementary-age children and a gazebo for social gatherings. Once an official design is released, the city will hold public meetings to acquire feedback from residents. “I get questions, I get phone calls, I get emails, and I get stopped after council meetings or when I’m out,” McCutchen said. “This has been a topic of ongoing discussion since June 2011, and there’s always been an overwhelming amount of people who would want to see this park become a reality.” CITY OF TWIN OAKS, MISSOURI NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING With respect to the City’s Ordinance [R.O. 2011 §110.080; Ord.
