Christchurch Boys’ High School’s Mitchell Hay, St Andrew’s College students Jesse Frew and Rhys Mariu, Christ’s College students Bradley Entwistle and Matt Munro, and St Bede’s College’s Nic Lidstone have been named in the Governor-General’s Youth XI to take on a Willows XI at The Willows. The Willows XI contains Black Caps 2015 Cricket World Cup hero Grant Elliot as well as other former Black Caps Ervin McSweeney, Ewen Chatfield, Shayne O’Connor, Evan Gray and the Marshall twins James and Hamish. Former All Black half-back and keen cricketer Andy Ellis will also play in the team. The local youth players will also have a chance to get one over Dion Ebrahim. The Canterbury Cricket performance squad coach is a former Zimbabwe international and in recent years has coached the Canterbury under-19 and under-17 squads. Dame Patsy Reddy will attend the event. The match at Roundhill Rd, Loburn, commences at 11am. Gymnast, 9, for NZ team • By Andrew King HALSWELL’S Flynn Gunther only started competing in trampoline 12 months ago and now he is the youngest member selected in a New Zealand team heading to compete in Australia in May. The 9-year-old first took up the sport 18 months ago his father, Tim, said but he has really taken a liking to it and is quite good at it. “He had to set a qualifying score at a competition in Rotorua a few weeks ago, or here in Christchurch on March 10-11. His score in Rotorua was not good enough but he did the business here in Christchurch,” he said. Then there was a nervous wait for the team selection for the Australian Gymnastics Championships which was confirmed on Friday night. “He was exhausted and thrilled at the same time,” Mr Gunther said. SPORTS He has gymnastics flowing through his blood with his mother, Nadia, a former New Zealand representative in artistic gymnastics when she was 16. Flynn will be ticking off a few firsts this year, after taking his first domestic plane flight to compete in Rotorua, he will now take his first ever international flight with the New Zealand team. The Seven Oaks Primary School student trains with Olympia Gymnastic Sports in Wigram which also has 10-year-old twins Thomas and Lachlan Fisher competing in the same event as Flynn.
