What you don't know about meds can hurt you
As we age, the number of prescriptions
we take often increases. Each medication
on its own has a specific task, but
when combined with other medications
it may have an adverse effect. If you take
several medications, and see more than
one doctor it’s crucial that you know and
communicate to them all the medications
you take.
The best way to ensure that you communicate
all your medications is by documenting
them on a medication record.
This can be a notebook that you carry in
your purse or pocket, or a small wallet
card such as the ones that are provided
by ABC Home Healthcare to their clients.
Write. Update. Communicate.
Write each drug and dose in your medication
record. Don’t forget any over the
counter medicines such as vitamins and
minerals, herbal supplements, cough and
cold / allergy medicines, aspirin, pain and
fever, topical, laxatives, etc. Update your
information as things change. Keep your
Medication Record with you and show
this information to your doctor and pharmacist
at every visit to ensure there are
no conflicting medications. Remember,
the better you communicate with your
doctor and your pharmacist, the better
they can ensure that you have the best
medication for your needs.
What else can I do to help?
It is important to keep the lines of communication
open with your doctor and
pharmacist. Talk to them when you are
prescribed a medication or any time you
purchase an over the counter medication
to gain a clearer understanding of what
it is, what to expect and how it may react
with any of your current medications.
Some questions
for your doctor:
• Is this medication the brand name or
generic?
• What does the medication do?
• How will I know it is working?
• When should I start feeling better?
• What should I do if I miss a dose?
• When do I stop taking this medication?
• Does this medication replace any of
the medicines I currently take?
Some questions for pharmacist:
• What is the name of the medication
if different than what your doctor discussed
with you?
• Are there any side effects?
• Do I need to avoid any activities or
certain foods while taking the medication?
• How will this medication interact
with the medicine I currently take, including
over the counter and herbal remedies?
Don’t be afraid to ask a question and
speak up.
• Have you noticed a change in the appearance
of your medication?
• Did you have a reaction to the medication?
• Do you understand what you’re taking
and why?
Not only is it OK to ask questions, it
is important and can help keep you safe.
Remember to also check the expiration
dates of your medications. Medications
past their date of expiration should be
discarded properly. Many cities and towns
have hazardous waste days during which
you may dispose of them. You can also
ask your pharmacist.
ABC Can Help
You play the biggest role in your medication
management. If at any point in
time you feel you are unable to manage
this safely on your own, give an agency
like ABC Home Healthcare a call. ABC
Home Healthcare is here to help keep
you safe with their Medication Management
Program.
Having an experienced Nurse Case
Manager manage your medication can
help ensure:
• All current medication is documented
and available for review
• You have a clear understanding of
each prescription
• The right medications are taken at
the right time
• Any reactions or allergies to medication
is clearly communicated and documented
If you would like to learn more about
medication safety or our Medication
Management program, call ABC Home
Celebrate spring flowers all over the world
By Beth J. Harpaz
ASSOCIATED PRESS
We're coming up on cherry blossom
festivals, tulip time and lilac season.
Here's a look at some of the places
that celebrate spring flowers with
festivals and other events.
TULIP TIME
You could go to the Netherlands to
see the Keukenhof gardens in Lisse,
which are planted with 7 million flowering
bulbs — tulips, daffodils, hyacinths
and more — blooming March
22-May 13.
Or you could visit Holland, Michigan,
which hosts a Tulip Time Festival
May 5-13. The city planted
100,000 tulips back in 1929, and the
annual celebration of the tulip now
includes entertainment, costumes,
parades and activities.
Pella, Iowa, has also been hosting
a Tulip Time celebration for decades.
Pella's event is May 3-5, and includes
parades, Dutch costumes and performances,
a craft and vendor fair, quilt
and flower shows in addition to the
tulip gardens.
The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival,
based in Mount Vernon in the state
of Washington, is scheduled for April
1-30 though the festival's website
notes that the tulips are expected to
bloom the last week of March.
CHERRY BLOSSOMS
In Washington, D.C., the projected
peak date for cherry blossoms along
the Tidal Basin was pushed back to
March 27-31 due to colder temperatures,
with the National Cherry Blossom
Festival running March 20-April
15. The festival marks the 1912 gift
of 3,000 cherry trees from a Tokyo
mayor to the U.S. capital city.
The Brooklyn Botanic Garden in
New York City also celebrates the
blooming of cherry trees that were a
gift from the Japanese government.
A two-day festival called Sakura
Matsuri is planned this year for April
28-29 with some 60 events, including
performances by taiko drummers.
The garden features a Japanese
pond and garden as well as an esplanade
lined with some of its 200 cherry
trees.
Macon, Georgia, claims to be home
to 350,000 cherry trees, a phenomenon
that began with one tree in the
backyard of a local businessman in
People walk along the Tidal Basin, visiting the cherry blossoms in Washington.
1949. The trees will be celebrated
March 16-25 in what local residents
bill as the "pinkest party" on Earth.
In Japan, the cherry trees are expected
to begin blooming around
March 24 in Tokyo and March 27 in
Kyoto, according to a forecast on the
Japan National Tourism Organization
website.
FLOWER FESTS ELSEWHERE
In Rochester, New York, the annual
Lilac Festival is May 11-20.
Organizers say the event draws
more than 500,000 people to see
not just the largest lilac collection
in the U.S., but also music and comedy
shows, art exhibits, a race and
more. Another lilac festival is held on
Mackinac Island in Michigan, June
8-17.
Bluebonnet season brings out locals
and visitors alike in Texas Hill Country.
Typically they bloom the last
week of March through April, though
as with all flowers, it can be hard to
predict.
Walt Disney World's Epcot International
Flower & Garden Festival
runs through May 28 with display
gardens, entertainment and more at
the theme park just outside Orlando,
Florida.

There's a new 'Symphony of the Seas'
By Richard Tribou
TRIBUNE NEWS SERVICE
This month the world gets a new
title holder with the debut of Royal
Caribbean Symphony of the Seas:
World's largest cruise ship.
The fourth Oasis-class ship from
the cruise line, which is just slightly
larger that its sister ships, will officially
inherit the bragging rights in a
handover ceremony on March 23.
The 228,081-ton, 1,188-foot-long
ship has been under construction at
STX France shipyard in St. Nazaire
France since October 2015, but now
the finishing touches are taking
place. The ship completed four days
of sea trials in the Atlantic off the
coast of France in mid-February undergoing
more than 80 tests for seaworthiness.
Royal Caribbean Symphony of the
Seas is the fourth Oasis-class vessel,
set to debut in spring 2018. It will be
the world's largest cruise ship and
sail out of Miami beginning fall 2018.
"All the ship's systems were put
into service at sea," reads a statement
from STX France. "The performances
expected during these presentations
were validated each time."
The Oasis-class vessels have each
held the title of World's Largest
Cruise Ship, certified each in turn by
Guinness World Records. Each one
has been slightly larger than the last,
with Oasis of the Seas first inheriting
the title almost a decade ago when it
debuted in 2009, followed by Allure of
the Seas in 2010 and Harmony of the
Seas in 2016.
Each of the four ships can hold
close to 7,000 passengers. Symphony
of the Seas has a maximum
capacity of 6,680 guests with 2,200
crew. At double capacity, though,
the guest count is 5,518 from 2,759
staterooms.
The new ship features the same
design, with seven distinct neighborhoods
and several of the same
features that debuted on Harmony
of the Seas or are mainstays across
the fleet. Those include the 10-deck
twisting dry slide The Ultimate
Abyss, twi FlowRider surf simulators,
a zip line, twin 40-foot rock
Retiring? Right-sizing? I can help!
climbing walls, ice skating rink and
the AquaTheater.
Unique to Symphony of the Seas
will be the "world's largest laser tag
arena," in the Studio B space where
the ice skating is performed. It will
be transformed into a glow-in-thedark
venue themed around the fate
of the last planets of the galaxy.
Also new to the fleet will be the Ultimate
Family Suite, a two-level suite
that will feature a slide, a floor-toceiling
Lego wall, air hockey, movietheater-style
TV room with popcorn
machine as well as a 212-square-foot
wraparound balcony with its own
climbing wall feature, bumper pool
table and whirlpool. It's a two-bedroom
suite that can accommodate up
to eight guests. Symphony will feature
28 more staterooms than Harmony
of the Seas with a Royal Suite
class, neighborhood balconies overlooking
Central Park, virtual balconies
on inside staterooms, and the
highest number of ocean-view cabins
at sea.
All Care’s Adult Foster Care Program
provides a better alternative for families
All Care’s Adult Foster Care (AFC) program is
a wonderful alternative to a nursing home or assisted
living facility for anyone who is disabled and/
or chronically ill and has access to MassHealth. The
program helps to provide dignity and independence
while improving quality of life for individuals who
require round the clock supervision, 7 days a week.
Here’s just one of the many success stories from
our AFC program. Kathleen had been living independently
in her own apartment for many years
but as her disease progressed, she experienced
multiple hospitalizations. Her last hospitalization
resulted in a short term stay in a rehabilitation
hospital. During this time, Kathleen experienced
increased cognitive deficits and had difficulty caring
for herself without assistance. It was recommended
that Kathleen stay in the facility and
permanently reside on the Long-Term Care Unit.
Kathleen was very unhappy about this. Fortunately,
the facility’s social worker spoke to the family
about the option of Kathleen returning home with
the assistance of one of her children through All
Care’s Adult Foster Care Program. Kathleen’s
daughter, Marie, moved in with her mother and
now provides the care that Kathleen needs while
The program helps
to provide dignity
and independence while
improving quality of life
for individuals who require round
the clock supervision
receiving a tax-free stipend twice a month through
MassHealth to help ease the financial burden of
caring for her Mom.
Many AFC clients were already living with a
parent, child or other family member who qualifies
as a caregiver. Others are placed in homes with
compassionate caregivers who are special, dedicated
people who provide meals, companionship and
personal care assistance to our AFC clients who
do not have families close by. The AFC program
also provides monthly nursing and social work visits
where both the client and caregiver receive the
support and resources they need to share a safe,
happy, fulfilling life together.
Since she has been at home, Kathleen’s appetite
and memory have improved and she has remained
out of the hospital. Kathleen is now able to spend
quality time with her grandchildren and enjoy meals
in the comfort of her own home. All Care’s nurses
and social workers visit the family monthly to provide
support and ensure that the home remains a
positive, safe and stable environment for everyone.
Clients who are enrolled in our AFC program
also have access to our Visiting Nurse Association,
Hospice, and Private Duty divisions, which
the case manager can access as needed to ensure
the individual receives the full range of services
to stay at home with safety and comfort. If you or
Foster Care program, please contact us at (888)
Wondering how to protect your assets?
The Law Office of Julie Low can help
The Law Office of Julie Low practices exclusively
in estate planning and administration, elder law,
and special needs planning.
The firm designs customized, comprehensive
will-based and trust-based estate plans to meet
each client’s unique needs. Whether your goal is
to protect assets from future long-term care costs,
minimize estate taxes and administration fees,
ensure a legacy for your descendants, provide
for your needs in the event of incapacity, or protect
and provide for a family member with special
needs, the Law Office of Julie Low can design an
estate plan that meets your objectives.
Attorney Low opened her Beverly-based firm because
she had a vision for the way law should be
practiced — with a focus on the client instead of
billable hours.
She believes in creating an inviting, personable
atmosphere where clients feel comfortable discussing
very personal subjects. Attorney Low fully engages
her clients in the design process, educating
and guiding them to make informed decisions. The
end result is a comprehensive plan clients understand,
rather than a set of documents that have
little personal meaning.
The firm charges fixed prices instead of traditional
hourly rates for estate planning. Ms. Low
believes clients appreciate knowing the cost of services
up-front and the open communication such
an approach fosters.
Client meetings are centered around important
issues — not the clock — and are handled with a
touch of lightheartedness, when appropriate, "because
contemplating disability, incapacity or death
is not a delightful or pleasant experience for most."
Clients are invited to contact Julie, or a team
member, with questions, without worrying about
being billed for extra time. Daytime, as well as evening
meetings, are available by appointment.
One of the firm’s specialties is the creation of
Long-Term Care Plans to help clients navigate
the complicated regulations of Medicaid, Veterans
Benefits, and other government programs.
Because Julie is knowledgeable in planning for
both types of Medicaid (traditional nursing home
and the lesser known, but unbelievably beneficial,
community programs), she reviews her clients’ options
with an eye to all programs to ensure each
plan provides later flexibility.
In addition to being an accredited attorney with
the Veteran’s Administration, Julie is a member of
WealthCounsel, ElderCounsel, The National
Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA), ElderLaw
Answers and The Academy of Special
Needs Planners.
She graduated cum laude from Western New
England University School of Law.
In her free time, Julie volunteers with North
Shore Elder Services’ Money Management Program,
assisting local seniors with paying bills and
budgeting, and on Northeast ARC’s Human Rights
Committee.
The Law Office of Julie Low provides complimentary
workshops on the basics of Estate Planning
and Long Term Care.
In conjunction with a local Geriatric Care Manager,
Julie has also produced a free and informative
guide for navigating Long Term Care on the
Social Security: 'Rosie the Riveter' spirit lives on
By Nicole Tiggemann
TRIBUNE NEWS SERVICE
"Rosie the Riveter" is an American icon representing
women working in factories during World
War II. These women learned new jobs and filled
in for the men who were away at war. They produced
much of the armaments and ammunition to
supply the war effort.
They also paid FICA on their wages, contributing
to the Social Security program. These "Rosies" embodied
the "can-do" spirit immortalized in a poster
by J. Howard Miller. Both the image and the spirit
live on today.
If you asked Rosie about Social Security, she
would use her rivet gun to drive home the value
of Social Security for women. More Rosies work
today, and nearly 60 percent of people receiving
benefits are women. Women tend to live longer
than men, so Social Security's inflation-adjusted
benefits help protect women. You can outlive your
savings and investments, but Social Security is for
life. Women provide their own basic level of protection
when they work and pay taxes into the Social
Security system. Women who have been married
and had low earnings or who didn't work may be
covered through their spouses' work.
Today's Rosie will turn her "can-do" spirit to
learning more about Social Security and what role
it will play in her financial plan for the future. She
focuses on our pamphlet called What Every Woman
Should Know available at www.socialsecurity.
gov/pubs/10127.html for a game plan.
She rolls up her sleeves and sets up her my Social
Security account (www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount)
to review her earnings and estimates. If
she finds an incorrect posting, she'll locate her W-2
form and quickly contact Social Security to correct
it because she understands these are the earnings
used to figure her benefits.
She dives into understanding benefits at our
planner pages at www.socialsecurity.gov/planners.
She examines how marriage, divorce, death of a
spouse, work, and other issues might affect her
benefits. She studies our fact sheet When to Start
Receiving Retirement Benefits at www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/
to help her decide when it's time
to lay down the rivet gun. And when the time is
right, she will file for retirement benefits online
at www.socialsecurity.gov/retire. Whether it was
keeping the war effort production lines humming
or discovering what is available to her from Social
Security, Rosie symbolizes the motto: "We Can Do
It." Rosie and millions like her rely on the financial
protection provided by Social Security in assembling
their own financial futures.
Nicole Tiggemann is a Social Security spokeswoman.
Here are five ways to reduce every-day stress
STATEPOINT MEDIA
Deadlines, responsibilities, bills -- there are so
many causes of stress in our lives. Unfortunately,
stress can take a negative toll on one’s health and
wellness, particularly if it goes unaddressed for
too long. Indeed, common effects of stress include
headaches, stomach upset, anxiety, sleep problems
and more, according to the Mayo Clinic.
This April, which is Stress Awareness Month,
consider these strategies for relieving stress.
• Aromatherapy: Scent your home and workspace
with stress-relieving scents like lavender,
rosemary and peppermint. Whether you use candles,
oils or fresh herbs, this is an easy way to immediately
reduce feelings of stress.
• Get outdoors: Both exercise and nature can
have stress-relieving properties. Combine the two
with hiking, biking, and water-based sports. Support
your adventures with water-resistant wearable
tech, like the WSD-F20 ProTrek Smart Outdoor
Watch, which features functions like full color
maps and GPS, app functionality to track progress,
as well as sensor technology, allowing you to comfortably
get off the beaten path and better appreciate
your surroundings.
• Meditate: Many experts agree on the benefits
of meditation, from increased positive emotions
to the relief of stress and anxiety. And these days,
meditation is more accessible than ever, as employers
offer mindfulness programs in the workplace,
mobile apps in guided meditation abound,
and communities and fitness clubs add practices
like tai chi and yoga to their rosters.
• Enjoy music: Music can be an extremely powerful
outlet for stress relief, particularly when you’re
getting creative and making it yourself. Have the
means at home to play a variety of beautiful music
so that you can de-stress any time you need. To
faithfully reproduce the sounds of acoustic instruments
like guitars, drums, basses, brass, wind instruments,
string ensembles and more, you don’t
need an entire music studio full of separate instruments.
The upgraded technology and sound quality
found in digital pianos like Casio’s CT-X700, which
includes the new AiX SoundSource, reproduces subtle
nuances and gestures specific to each sound.
• Keep a journal: Keeping a journal can be a good
way of putting things in perspective and thinking
through the short- and long-term problems and
challenges that are causing you stress. Plus, the
ritual aspect of what could be made into a daily
habit, may have a calming effect on the body and
mind.
This Stress Awareness Month and beyond, considering
adopting stress-reducing hobbies and
habits for a healthier body and mind.
Family-friendly ideas for enjoying spring
STATEPOINT MEDIA
Spring is the best time of year to
get outdoors and spend some quality
time with the family. Here are three
ideas to shake off winter’s cabin fever
and the most of the season.
Take a Hike
Visit a state or national park and
hit the hiking trails. Most parks
have a variety of trails of varying
difficulty and length. From Glacier
National Park in the west to Arabia
Mountain National Heritage Area
in the east, check out options that
offer nature and wildlife areas, hiking
trails, parks and family fun. If
hiking, do your research and select
a route that’s right for your group,
pack some snacks and sandwiches
before hitting the trail. Just be sure
to stay hydrated, wear good footwear,
and apply sunscreen and bug spray.
As the weather warms, you’ll want to
take these important precautions.
To reward your efforts, plan a fun
ice cream excursion for the way home.
Community Events
Whether you stay local or travel
Whether you stay local or travel afar, many local communities offer
music, food and fun-filled spring events and outdoor festivals.
afar, many local communities offer music,
food and fun-filled spring events
and outdoor festivals. How about an
epic road trip to Brookhaven, Ga.? The
city hosts their annual Brookhaven
Cherry Blossom Festival each spring
attracting over 15,000 people from
across the country. The festival makes
for a great girlfriends’ getaway, guys’
trip or family adventure.
“This music and art extravaganza
is our marquee event of the year,
and we hope to kick off the Atlantaarea
festival season in style,” says
Brookhaven Mayor, John Ernst.
The totally free event takes place
at Blackburn Park on March 24-25
and features something for all age
groups, including great food, an arts
and crafts festival, a classic car show,
a 5k road race, a dog show, a Kidz
Zone, and big-name musical acts, like
country music stars Craig Morgan
Make a Difficult Day a Bit Easier For Your Family
Planning-Ahead Final Arrangements
Although planning one’s final arrangements
is not something most of us want to think
about, it is one of the greatest gifts you can
give your family.
For 85 years, Puritan Lawn has been a leader
in supplying Plan-Ahead information to the
local community. Cemetery Plan-Ahead programs
have continued to be the cornerstone of
Puritan Lawn’s charter.
Plan-Ahead information is provided to families
and it is up to them to decide if planning
now makes sense.
Savings
On average, cemetery costs double every 8-10
years. Planning-Ahead secures today’s prices
and avoids emotional overspending at the
time of a death. At Puritan Lawn, there are
never future assessments to you or your heirs
for care of your family lot.
Our 85 year old Perpetual Care Fund assures
that the park will be as beautiful in the future
as it is today.
Budget Plans
When a cemetery lot is arranged at the time of
death, all costs must be paid in full prior to a
burial. At Puritan Lawn, we offer families a
variety of affordable monthly payment plans.
Planning Together Vs. Alone
By not considering Planning-Ahead, one partner
is left to make all the decisions alone and
at a very difficult time. Taking this step together
makes the day of death just a little bit
easier for your family.
What if I Want Cremation?
At Puritan Lawn, we offer both traditional
burial and cremation options. Arrangements
can be customized to accommodate your
wishes.
Let us Make It Easy For You
We would be honored to provide information
or give you a personalized tour of the park.
We are available 7 days a week. If more convenient,
we can even arrange to bring information
to your home.
It is important that you and your family feel
comfortable in the environment that you
choose. Puritan Lawn has one of the most
naturally beautiful settings in the country and
offers over two dozen areas to select from.
We are one of the few cemeteries in the area
where you can Plan-Ahead all necessary
steps.
Over 90% of Puritan Lawn
services are arranged by
families that decided to
Plan-Ahead.
Adult Foster Care of the North Shore provides
financial and emotional solutions to families
Adult Foster Care of the
North Shore is a one of a kind
organization. For the last 15
years they have been providing
financial and emotional solutions
to families in need of care for a
disabled or chronically ill loved
one (clients). Many Adult Foster
Care clients are already living
with a parent, child or other
family member who qualifies as
a caregiver. Others are placed in
homes with compassionate and
diligent caregivers.
In 2000, Dr. Cynthia Bjorlie left
“When I first saw Grace,
I knew I wanted to open
my home to her. Now,
we love to get our
hair done and get
manicures together.
Grace has been a
wonderful addition to
our family.”
her private practice of 17 years
and opened Adult Foster Care
of the North Shore after reading
an article in the NY Times about
“Foster Seniors,” a program in
New Jersey. Having always been
interested in the care of people
who cannot manage alone, she
decided to develop her own
program in Massachusetts.
Since 2001, Adult Foster Care
of the North Shore has grown
to a staff of 30 and now serves
over 400 clients. The difference
between AFCNS and other
similar companies is that, even
though they share the same
mission, the staff at Adult Foster
Care of the North Shore actually
lives the mission. AFCNS
provides compassionate and
flexible support for clients and
their caregiver families.
