Lincoln High girls give<br />

strong T20 performance<br />

at Canty tournament<br />

LINCOLN TENNIS Club<br />

were unable to hold their<br />

prize-giving tournament<br />

due to wet courts last<br />

weekend.<br />

However, the wet<br />

weather didn’t stop keen<br />

juniors from having a hit<br />

out before and after the<br />

prize-giving ceremony.<br />

The club has a great<br />

group of juniors, with<br />

many returning every year,<br />

and a growing group of beginners<br />

in their coaching<br />

programme.<br />

for beginners: Ariana<br />

Johnson, Amelia<br />

Preston and Aila<br />

Wilson.<br />

LINCOLN High School<br />

finished third at the<br />

secondary schools<br />

Canterbury girls’ cricket<br />

tournament recently.<br />

The tournament consisted<br />

of four rounds of<br />

Twenty20 games played<br />

across two days.<br />

The Lincoln team had<br />

some girls new to the game<br />

and some experienced<br />

players.<br />

Melissa Banks was the<br />

star with bat in hand,<br />

scoring two centuries and<br />

finishing as the tournament’s<br />

top run-scorer with<br />

339 runs.<br />

She scored 102 of Lincoln’s<br />

165 runs in their<br />

opening round 60-run<br />

win against Villa Maria<br />

College. In their second<br />

match, Lincoln suffered a<br />

37-run loss to Cashmere<br />

High School.<br />

Ruru Girls’ School by five<br />

runs in their final group<br />

match to qualify for the<br />

third and fourth play-off<br />

match against Burnside<br />

High School.<br />

In the play-off, Lincoln<br />

batted first and set an<br />

imposing 190 from their<br />

20 overs thanks to an unbeaten<br />

knock of 132 from<br />

Banks.<br />

Lincoln then restricted<br />

Burnside to 156/3 to win<br />

by 34 runs and claim third<br />

spot.<br />

The tournament was<br />

won by Christchurch<br />

Girls’ High School which<br />

will now represent the<br />

Canterbury region at the<br />

national tournament later<br />

in the year.<br />

FUN: Wet weather may have cancelled Lincoln’s<br />

prize-giving tournament but it didn’t stop the<br />

youngsters from getting involved.<br />
