West Melton
community to
mark Anzac Day
The 2018 Anzac Day commemoration in West Melton will again
take place around the War Memorial, which stands in the West
Melton School grounds.
A recent monument in the township, it
was built to mark the Gallipoli centenary in
2015 by teacher Shane Dawson and school
caretaker John Blundell, and is inscribed
with the names of the 38 men from the local
area who died serving in World War One.
The commemoration will start at 10am,
with those wanting to attend advised to
arrive by 9.30am. MC for the event will be
Bruce Russell, the instigator of the memorial
installation, while the head boy and head
girl from West Melton School will give an
address based on what Anzac Day means
to them, and pupils from the school will lay
poppies on the memorial.
Music to mark the day will be presented,
with Leigh Walters again playing the
trumpet. This year, as has been the custom
in West Melton, the WWI tradition of a lone
piper playing the lament will be brought
back.
Six soldiers from Burnham Military
Camp will represent the Defence Force, and
there will also be representatives from the
Templeton RSA, who asked to attend this
year’s service.
Councillors from the Selwyn Ward will be
there, as well as people from as far afield as
Ashburton, who will come in recognition of
their relatives who lived locally, and served
in the War.
Bruce says the West Melton Residents
Association and the school are very
supportive of the event, and he is confident
it will be as successful as last year’s, when
250-300 people attended. After the service
morning tea will be served.
“A very warm welcome is extended to all.”
