from navigation to phone contacts to changing
music tracks.
Furthermore, you can keep track of speed
and directions from the sat nav via the headup
display, which lowers out of sight when not
wanted. The nextgen touchscreen infotainment
system ditches tactile buttons/analogue
instrument dials of older models and is very
intuitive and easy to use.
Arteon features the latest in safety and
assistance technology from VW, such as
front, side and rear assist systems to create a
proactive passenger protection system.
Most impressive technology is the new
Adaptive “predictive cruise control”. More
than just keeping to a particular speed and
maintaining fixed distance from the car in front,
GPS and sat-nav information regulate speed
within speed-limited zones, meaning even if
you set cruise control at 100km/h, the car
automatically slows when entering speed-limited
zones and speeds up afterwards, and does the
same thing for upcoming bends in the road.
According to VW the Arteon is even able to
negotiate roundabouts, and I must admit I was
not brave enough to test this, but it means that
you could technically call
do it using just hands and
no feet!
Mated to a smooth-shifting sevenspeed
dual-clutch transmission, the Arteon’s
performance does not disappoint. Under the
bonnet the 2.0-litre engine produces 206kW
power and 350Nm torque. It is a strong and
smooth engine that pulls well, zero to 100km/h
taking just 5.6 seconds.
On the highway, the car feels remarkably
stable and composed – it is always planted and
easy to pilot. It also gobbles up tarmac with
effortless ease.
Given the speed limitations on our
roads, there is no real need to put the car in
Sport suspension mode. The 4Motion fourwheel
drive keeps traction in check when the
going gets rough. Steering is accurate even
if lacking slightly in feedback. However, the
all-new Arteon is after all not a car you want
to manhandle despite how capable it is. It is
best enjoyed in all of its poise on long drives,
soaking up imperfections in the road as a luxury
car should. Use settings of Sport mode for
steering and Comfort for suspension.
For those who still want a sedan style
car this looks to be an extremely compelling
proposition.
