Property Fire Safe 

Fires can start and spread quickly, especially when conditions are 

dry, windy and hot. Following these tips can help keep your home and 

property safe: 

• Assess the fire risk for your house and property. Have an escape plan and know 

where you’ll meet. 

• Make sure fire appliances can get to you – they need a clear space at least 4 

metres wide and four metres high. 

• To slow or stop a fire spreading to your home, create a clear space around it of at 

least three metres. Remove branches hanging over your roof, keep gutters clean, 

and remove or prune flammable plants and shrubs. 

• Activities such as lawn mowing, chainsaw use and grinding can produce sparks 

so keep machines well maintained. If the weather is hot and dry, use machinery 

where you’ll meet.

S ELWYN GETS READY 

Selwyn has its own community based 

emergency response support and 

notification network called Selwyn 

Gets Ready. The system allows people 

to sign up for free to receive alerts via 

text or email in an emergency. This 

alert system operates in conjunction 

with local volunteer networks who 

check on households needing support 

and provides assistance if needed or 

allows those support people to request 

help from Council where required. 

Locally Selwyn Gets Ready has been 

used to: 

• issue tsunami warnings 

• provide information and advice 

about fires, and alert people when 

they need to be prepared to evacuate 

• provide information in the aftermath 

of earthquakes 

• issue weather warnings for strong 

winds or snow 

• advise people about fire risk and 

fire restrictions 

• communicate messages from 

Selwyn Police to local communities.

R OLLESTON 

By all accounts, William Rolleston 

never owned land in the town that was 

named after him. He did, however, play 

a major role in bringing the railway to 

town, with a railway terminus added in 

1866. 

Rolleston is now the seat of the 

council and largest town in Selwyn. 

Originally it was considered a satellite 

town of Christchurch - not always a 

popular designation - however when 

Prime Minister Norman Kirk called 

Rolleston the “Town of the Future” 

he extolled his vision for how he 

could see the future development 

and growth. Unfortunately, his vision 

did not come to fruition during his 

lifetime, with stagnation in the 70s and 

80s. The 1990s however saw a decade 

of change for this township with the 

population increasing and growth 

of the town. In the 2001 census, the 

population was nearly 2000. In 2013, 

the population was nearly 10,000, 

and as of June 2017, it stands at over 

14,000. 

With the population increase, 

demand on amenities has increased 

also. House construction is nothing 

short of phenomenal, with Faringdon 

leading the way. The South Point retail 

precinct in Faringdon serves residents 

well. 

Rolleston is served, currently, by two 

supermarkets, medical, dental and 

physiotherapy centres, pharmacies, 

banks and numerous retail outlets, 

restaurants, cafes, and fast food 

outlets. It is, however, poised to take 

a giant leap forward. Developments 

are underway to provide many more

Foster Recreation Park 

is being developed as the 

largest sport and recreation 

area in Selwyn. The children’s 

playground at Foster Park 

opened in early 2018, and 

is very popular. The latest 

Selwyn District Council 

long term plan consultation 

document, Fast Forward 

28, includes a project to 

build an indoor courts 

complex at Foster Park, 

to provide space for the 

rapidly-growing demand for 

sports such as basketball, 

badminton, netball and 

futsal. The complex of four 

indoor courts and four 

covered courts would be 

complemented by a sports 

hub facility and toilets and 

changing rooms for Foster 

Park. This proposed $21 

million project would be 

completed in late 2019. 

The Aquatic Centre, several 

new primary schools and 

Rolleston College, for year 

9-10s (which will eventually 

take year 9-13 pupils) 

and numerous sports and 

recreational opportunities, 

all cater to families in the 

Rolleston township and 

area. The Council is also 

proposing in the 10-year 

consultation plan, to create 

an extension to the Selwyn 

Aquatic Centre to provide 

a new 25m, eight-lane pool 

to help meet continuing 

demand for learn to swim 

and other activities. The 

$12m proposal would also 

include a café and fitness/ 

wellbeing space.

Lincoln’s shopping caters for 

everyone with boutique stores range 

from those offering organic, healthy 

or gourmet food and meat through to 

designer fashion and giftware. There is 

also a supermarket, accommodation, 

hardware store, service station and 

many services. The retail offerings 

are set to certainly change soon with 

the recent development of both the 

Rosemerryn and Vernon Drive retail 

precincts promising to bring more retail 

and service industries to the town. 

The Lincoln Farmers’ Market, held 

between 10am and 1pm every Saturday, 

is also a popular destination for 

residents where they can purchase 

everything from baked goods to plants, 

knitted items to cheeses. 

Lincoln University doesn’t just provide 

tertiary education to its students, it also 

opens its doors to the wider community 

with the book shop, café and Lincoln 

University Recreation Centre also 

providing valuable services. 

Families are well provided for with 

all levels of education on offer from 

pre-school to tertiary. There are also 

a variety of activities for children 

available with multiple organisations 

including Scouts and Brownies, Karate, 

acting classes, on offer in the town. 

Lincoln’s charm is also in its historic 

buildings: the Pioneer Hall (1874), Liffey 

Cottage (1875), St Stephen’s Anglican 

Church (1877), Lincoln University’s Ivey 

Hall (1881), Union Parish Church (1882), 

and Coronation Library (1911). A plough, 

made in the town in 1865, is also on

Those wanting to walk around the 

town are spoilt for choice with The 

Liffey River providing a wonderful way 

to amble around. New subdivisions 

have also included walkways and the 

Rail Trail is also accessible from Lincoln. 

Nearby towns include: Springston to 

the west, Ladbrooks and Broadfields 

closer to the city, and Greenpark 

through which cyclists pass as they 

follow the Little River Rail Trail. At

WEST MELTON 

West Melton’s proximity to 

Christchurch has seen the town 

develop and grow in the last decade. 

The town’s infrastructure has also 

developed to support the new 

residents of West Melton. With a 

shopping centre containing a bakery, 

hair salon, beautician, medical centre, 

pharmacy, physio, real estate office, 

supermarket and bar and restaurant, 

these facilities support the existing 

hotel and cafe and service station/ 

shop. 

West Melton community facilities 

are also currently under development 

with a new community centre being 

built. This new centre will provide a 

multipurpose indoor sport court, a 

second recreational area, meeting 

rooms, a dedicated Playcentre room 

with outdoor area and Plunket 

facilities. The new community hall will 

support the many local community 

projects, clubs, crafts and youth 

groups that West Melton hosts. 

Also currently being built is the new 

FENZ West Melton Rural Fire Brigade 

facility with continued support from 

Selwyn District Council. This much 

needed facility will house a Rural Fire 

4WD, and one large and one small 

rural appliance. With the building 

being future proofed to support the 

continual development of the area. 

West Melton School provides 

excellent education for new entrants 

to year 8 students. Younger children 

are also catered for by three early 

childhood educators. There are also 

Plunket rooms and a Playcentre to 

support your family needs. 

West Melton offers residents and 

visitors a local market held in the 

grounds of St Paul’s Church each 

Saturday morning. The community 

also offers a variety of clubs and 

activities. Interest groups include, 

dance, gardening, gymnastics, young 

farmers. Sporting clubs include rugby, 

netball, tennis and bowls. West Melton 

also has access to library facilities as 

the Selwyn Library Bus, visits West 

Melton regularly.

back to when the Prebble family settled 

there in the 1850s. Younger brother, 

Edward opened a general store and 

“Prebble Town” was born. It is one of 

Canterbury’s oldest settlements, and 

its long history still whispers through 

the streets and buildings. 

Prebbleton’s proximity to 

Christchurch, only 5 minutes from 

Hornby and 15 to 20 minutes to the 

CBD, make it a very popular residential 

area. It is supported by its own retail 

precinct, with cafes, fuel and car 

repairs, local produce and groceries, 

restaurants, takeaways and the 

Prebbleton Tavern which harks all the 

way back to Edward Prebble himself. 

Surrounded by orchards, olive groves, 

race-horse stables and horticulture, 

Prebbleton has retained a village 

feel. There are preschools, a primary 

school, sports fields, a skate park, and 

a community hall. 

The monthly Sunday market is 

popular, weather permitting, and there 

is a walking group and activities such 

as indoor bowls and Tai Chi. The local 

hall houses many private celebrations 

as well as community gatherings and 

events.

L EESTON 

Leeston is the principal town in 

the Ellesmere district, servicing the 

rich farmlands and surrounds. As 

the population grows, so to do the 

services available to residents. There 

is a medical centre, rest home, RSA, 

fitness centre, library, toy library, 

volunteer fire brigade and schools 

from pre-school to high school. There 

is a supermarket, cafés and bakeries. 

There is Airbnb accommodation in 

the area, and the Crate and Barrel, a 

family run hotel and restaurant, also 

has rooms available. 

Lakeland Art is a new gallery in 

Leeston, showcasing local artists in 

many genres. 

The Ellesmere Big Band has been 

based in Leeston for more than a 115 

years. The multi-award winning band 

performs regularly at shows, festivals, 

weddings and more. 

Leeston township dates back to the 

1860s, and many families have a strong 

connection to the area. Airborne 

Honey is the oldest surviving brand 

of honey in New Zealand. William 

Bray and Alfred Barrett moved their 

operation from Banks Peninsula to 

Leeston in the late 1920s, and it is still 

based there today. 

A cenotaph, honouring the men and 

women of the district who served 

and died in numerous wars, occupies 

centre stage at the entrance to the 

town. ANZAC remembrance is held 

there every year. 

Leeston has a strong sporting 

community, utilising large sports fields 

and the rugby clubrooms. There is also 

tennis, shooting, and archery in the 

area. Scouts, Girl Guides, and St. John 

cadets also have a presence. 

Te Waihora/Lake Elesmere is an 

internationally recognised wetlands 

and wildlife reserve. It has great 

cultural significance and history to 

Ngai Tahu. Many restoration projects 

maintain this beautiful area. A walk to 

the Harts Creek bird hide is easy for 

all the family, and only several minutes 

from Leeston. 

A highlight of the year is the annual 

Ellesmere A & P Show which will be 

held on 13 October this year.


D ARFIELD 

Darfield is the largest town in the 

Malvern Ward, and sits between 

Christchurch and the Torlesse Ranges 

on the main road through to the 

West Coast. With an easy 40 minute 

commute into Christchurch City 

centre, Darfield is a popular choice for 

those wishing to reside in a rural town 

but have the city’s conveniences close 

by. 

Darfield is sometimes known as the 

town under the Nor’ West Arch due 

to the weather phenomenon that 

displays a flat arch of cloud layered 

above the mountains to the west of 

the town. Sitting under the Southern 

Alps, Darfield offers splendid views of 

the Mount Hutt and Torlesse Ranges. 

Darfield residents have all they need 

to live contently in the community, 

from the busy commercial centre 

with cafes, bakery, hotel, supermarket, 

butchers, drapery, haberdashery, tyre 

centre, fresh fruit and veg, giftware, 

post service, service station, garden 

centre and takeaway shops , through 

to the stores that supply farm and 

lifestyle block requirements. 

Darfield and the surrounding areas 

are also supported by a collection 

of home business that range from 

nursery plants and wood turning 

through to agricultural business and 

soap making. Darfield’s main street 

also hosts a Farmers Market on a 

Saturday morning. 

Health needs are also looked after 

with the Darfield Medical Centre, 

Darfield Dentist, Darfield Pharmacy, 

Plunket, physio and holistic health and 

chiropractor. 

With nursery and preschools, 

primary school and high school, 

children’s education is catered for, 

along with many community facilities 

such as churches, library, sports clubs, 

swimming pool and a newly purpose 

built dance studio. 

Darfield’s many recreational facilities 

include sporting facilities such as 

tennis, squash and netball courts, 

rugby and football pitches, bowling 

club and shooting club. Darfield and 

the surrounding areas host clubs and 

groups to support the interests of the 

community, St John’s Cadets, craft, 

music, seniors club, bridge, sewing, 

spinning and weaving, youth groups, 

to name a few. 

Many walks are available throughout 

the town highlighting the town’s 

history such as Tussock Square, the old 

jail house, War Memorial, stone clock 

tower or, for the more adventurous, 

you can try Mc Hugh’s plantation with 

its walking and mountain bike tracks. 

In Darfield you truly will find something

The rural communities nestled in 

the Selwyn foothills are filled with 

passionate and dedicated people 

who give up their time to run some of 

the best events in the district. These 

events are the fabric of the community 

and make the area a great place to live 

and visit. 

Annual events include the Heritage 

Open Days, Hororata Pig and Possum 

Hunt, Windwhistle Golf Classic, Malvern 

Hunt, Hororata Swap Meet, Terrace 

Station Garden Visits, Homesbush 

Stables Open Day, Hororata Parish 

Spring Fair and the Hororata Highland 

Games. As well as these annual 

events there are numerus events and 

festivals which happen throughout 

the year. New to the calendar in 2018 

was the Hororata Night Glow, another 

example of what these communities 

can do when they band together. All 

of these events are made possible by 

volunteers who give their time to make 

them happen with many community 

organisations. 

The area has many great venues for 

events including the Lake Coleridge, 

Glenroy, Hororata and Glenroy Halls. 

The Hororata Domain is the perfect 

venue for any event large or small; the 

cross country course is regularly used 

for equestrian events. The Hororata 

Golf Club located in Glentunnel is a 

wonderful setting for not only golf but 

with a café soon to be opened, other 

functions as well.

H ORORATA HIGHLAND GAMES 

The Hororata Highland Games was created in 2011 from 

the community’s desire to take charge of its own future 

following the devastation suffered during Canterbury 

earthquakes. Being proactive, a motivated group of 

individuals developed a theme which resonated with them 

and filled a unique gap in the event market; the Hororata 

Highland Games was born and is now a permanent fixture 

in the Canterbury event calendar. 

The event attracts over 500 competitors who compete 

in highland dancing, piping and drumming, tug o’ war, 

highland spin (fleece to garment challenge), small bore 

shooting, amateur heavy athletics (men’s and women’s) 

and the Oceania Heavyweight Championship (professional 

heavy athletics). 

Visitors don’t come just to sit on the bleaches, but all 

ages can have a go themselves in modified or replicas of 

the competitive events. Have A Go events include the junior 

warriors, caber or sheath toss, lightweight farmers walk, 

small bore shooting, archery, kilted mile, haggis hurl and 

the hororata pie eating competition. Most of these events 

are free to participate in. 

The event hosts over 100 stalls offering quality merchandise 

and produce. In the stalls area there is a children’s 

fairground, music entertainment, Scottish country dancing 

and the Taste of Scotland offering a range of Scottish 

themed food and wine. Visitors discover Scottish heritage 

and their ancestry in Clan Lane. 

The Chieftain’s welcoming ceremony is a unique blend 

of Scottish and Kiwi culture. A Karanga welcomes the 

chieftain, but the response comes from bag pipes. A kapa 

haka group adds even more flare and excitement to this 

spectacle. The massed bands closing ceremony is heart 

pounding and a fitting end to the day. 

This is a family friendly event that appeals to all ages and 

visitors don’t have to be Scottish to enjoy it. Over 11,000 

people attend each year. 

Above all else the Hororata Highland Games is a 

community event; run by the Hororata Community Trust 

for the benefit of the community. Over 200 volunteers 

join Clan Hororata each year to make the event happen. 

The Hororata Highland Games is a truly inspiring story of 

what a rural community can achieve with motivation and a 

shared vision.


C ASTLE HILL – ARTHUR’S PASS 

Main Highway 73 leads you not only 

over Porters Pass and through some 

of the best scenery in New Zealand 

but also to the high country villages 

of Castle Hill and Arthur’s Pass. Along 

this most spectacular drive you will 

pass many historical sites along with 

some amazing lakes. 

Lake Lyndon, a small lake near 

Castle Hill, is popular for rainbow 

trout fishing. Lake Lyndon becomes 

very popular in summer due to its 

close proximately to local towns of 

Springfield, Sheffield and Darfield for 

water sports. Winter at the lake can 

also be spectacular and can make the 

perfect photo opportunity as the lake 

regularly freezes due to its elevation 

and location. 

Nestled under the Craigieburn 

Range, a high alpine village sits. Castle 

Hill village is a most picturesque place 

in both summer and winter. It has a 

small number of permanent residents 

along with a number of holiday homes 

(used extensively during the winter 

ski season). The village is the centre 

for many who participate in the many 

recreational activities in the area, 

including exploring the distinctive 

limestone boulders of Castle Hill, skiing 

and mountain biking. The boulders 

are located within the Kura Tawhiti 

Conservation Area. 

Lake Pearson runs parallel with State 

Highway 73 and is easily accessible. At 

195ha it is the largest of the Pearson, 

or Waimakariri, trout fishing lakes. 

Fishing from a dinghy or kayak, not 

mechanically propelled, is permitted 

on this lake. 

Cave Stream Scenic Reserve is a 

popular stop for all. If you take on the 

challenge of walking through Cave 

Stream limestone formation, please 

ensure you read the warning signs 

before attempting this walk. 

The unique Arthur’s Pass alpine village 

sits 740m above sea level, is nestled 

into the mountains and surrounded 

by beech forest in the centre of the 

Arthur’s Pass National Park. Although 

a small village, its welcome is always 

big with only 25 full time residents 

plus the additional estimated 250,000 

plus visitors each year – the village 

always has a busy vibe - whether you 

arrive by the Transalpine train, car, 

camper or for the brave by bike or 

scooter. The visitor centre is located 

as you enter the village and makes 

a perfect first stop to inquire about 

the history of the Pass. Arthur’s 

Pass also boasts a general store, tea 

rooms and a restaurant. However 

it is recommended that you bring 

groceries/tramping supplies with you 

due to a limited selection.

accessed from the village with the 

Devil’s Punch Bowl being a popular 

one.

Cycling in Selwyn is a popular 

recreational sport, with an abundance 

of off road tracks, urban cycle ways 

and long wide roads for cyclng, the 

choice of tracks and routes is yours. 

URBAN CYCLEWAYS 

Coalgate to Glentunnel: Walk/ 

Cycleway connects the two small 

towns in rural Malvern. A 2.4km flat 

track suitable for all abilities. 

Prebbleton to Lincoln: Part of the 

Little River Railtrail, a 7.7km track 

joining the two popular towns. 

Rolleston to Lincoln: The 9km 

cycleway runs along Lowes Road, 

Lincoln Rolleston Road and Boundary 

Road. From Lincoln, cyclists can 

connect to the existing Little River 

Railtrail. 

Springs Memorial Cycleway – 

Springston to Lincoln: The 2.6km 

cycleway runs from Everest Way in

There are six ski fields in Selwyn. 

Each offers excellent skiing and 

snowboarding to suit all abilities. They 

are in close proximity to each other 

and are supported by nearby villages 

such as Castle Hill, Springfield, and

a close eye on weather and snow

SPRING FAIR 

On Labour Day, 2nd October, 2018, 

the annual Hororata Parish Spring Fair 

will run from 9.30am-2pm. Stalls will 

include white elephant, homemade

specialty items, plus there will be 

a country auction, live music and 

competitions. 

LEESTON FETE 

Next year’s Leeston Fete will be on 

30 March. The main street including 

Anderson Square will be closed to 

traffic and the stallholders will come 

from all over New Zealand. A huge 

variety of food vendors will be there 

and the kids’ area in Anderson Square 

will offer pony rides and bouncy

SELWYN MARAE - 

TAUMUTU 

Taumutu sits alongside Te Waihora 

(Lake Ellesmere) and very close to the 

sea. It is the site of several pā, significant 

in the history of Māori. It is also where 

some iwi, who were migrating south 

from the North Island, decided to settle 

due to Te Waihora’s rich resources. 

A Maori hall was erected in 1891 on 

the old pā site of Ngāti Moki, later 

becoming a working Marae with the 

adjoining Whare Kai built in 1986. 

The Marae serves the descendants 

of Moki and father Te Ruahikihiki, who 

now number in their thousands. A 

Rūnanga committee are responsible for 

the development and operation of the 

marae that couples as an educational 

facility, relating Māori history and 

custom to future generations. It is one 

of eighteen Ngai Tahu Papatipu marae. 

The Rūnanga is also closely associated 

with the wider Selwyn community and 

has gifted names to new schools. 

Closer to the sea, the historic Hone 

Wetere Church and adjoining Urupa 

(graveyard) sit on the site of Te 

Ruahikihiki’s pā. This area is of particular 

historical significance as it includes 

some old pre-European burials. 

If visiting please adhere to Māori 

protocol by not entering the marae 

grounds unless invited. However, 

people are welcome to explore the 

church grounds and spend time on the 

lake and beach beyond.

AGRICULTURAL FIELD DAYS 

The Courtenay Road site in Kirwee 

will again be the venue for the next 

South Island Agricultural Field Days 

(SIAFD) being held on March 27-29, 

2019. 

The SIAFD is the opportunity to give 

farmers and others in the rural sector a 

chance to see the latest in agricultural 

advancements – whether this be in 

machinery, services or technology that 

can be used to optimise production. 

The emphasis is on home-grown 

products available on the market but 

also includes products and services 

from further afield. 

The Field Days is the only agricultural 

show in New Zealand to feature sideby-side 

demonstrations, with 80 - 100 

tractors, headers, mowers, seed drills 

and other machines being put through 

their paces each day. 

The SIAFD began in 1951 at 

Motukarara, with the event now 

attracting between 20,000 and 

25,000 visitors during the three-day 

showcase. 

The SIAFD is a non-profit, 

incorporated society, run mostly by 

volunteers who are either farmers or 

who work in the agricultural field. 

Media spokesperson Daniel Schat 

says at 80ha, SIAFD is the largest in 

area of all Field Days in New Zealand. 

“We are currently undertaking capital 

development, so in years to come we 

can optimise all our space,” Daniel 

says. 

Wet weather during the 2017 event, 

which made conditions difficult, has 

prompted the organising committee 

to spend time in the off-season laying 

shingle on the laneways, and this will 

facilitate a cleaner and faster set-up 

for next year’s event, he says. 

Machinery demonstrations will 

again be a key feature of SIAFD, 

and companies wanting to take part 

will be able to register following the 

publication of the prospectus in May. 

As a non-profit organisation with 

charitable status, SIAFD donates to 

local community groups, and awards 

university scholarships each year.

PLEAS HAVE been made to 

have a stop sign installed at an 

accident-prone Waddington 

intersection. 

Residents have asked for the 

sign to be installed a the 

intersection of State Highway 73 

and Waimakariri Gorge Rd to 

prevent future crashes. 

Already two serious crashes have 

been recorded at the intersection 

this year, one a fatal. 

Fox Glacier man Ioane Sitivi, 36, 

died from injuries he sustained when 

two vehicles crashed in January. 

He was one of eight people hurt 

in the crash. He and another person 

were critically injured, while 

two others were moderately injured 

and four had minor injuries. 

In February, a sport utility vehicle 

failed to give way and was hit 

by a truck. One person sustained 

serious injuries while the other had 

minor injuries. 

Three other crashes that resulted 

in both serious and minor injuries 

were recorded a the intersection 

between 2014-2016. 

The issue was presented by 

resident Bob Scott to the Sheffield- 

Waddington Community Committee 

in February.
