COMMERCIAL VEHICLES BAY OF PLENTY BUSINESS NEWS April/May 2018 21 Commercial vehicle segment continues to take market share The New Zealand automobile sector is heading into 2018 on the back of strong growth across most segments last year - and especially for SUVs and Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV), which are continuing to take market share away from large passenger sedans. Last year saw record growth, with 160,115 new vehicle registrations overall, according to the latest Motor Trade Association (MTA) data. That was up nine percent over 2016 and included 51,507 new commercial registrations - up 16 percent and the best result on record - and 108,608 new passenger registrations (up 6 percent). And even though the biggest volumes overall were in the larger metro areas last year, it’s noteworthy that the highest growth came from within the provinces. That has certainly been the case in the Bay of Plenty, where the auto sector has benefited from a buoyant economy, significant infrastructure spending, and booming export volumes. In Tauranga, new commercial vehicle sales were up 17 percent last year on 2016, and used commercial vehicles were up 13 percent, with total vehicle sales of 14,408 up 11 percent. In Rotorua, while total volumes of 4,531 were lower, they were still 25 percent higher than the previous year, with new commercial vehicles up 29 percent and used commercial vehicles up 14 percent. MTA Dealer Services and Mediation Manager Tony Everett says passenger vehicles have declined since the global financial crisis, while there has been a massive rise in sales of SUVs and LCVs. “The growth in the new vehicle market has come from within the SUV and LCV sectors,” he says. “Traditional passenger cars have lost ground, as SUVs have stormed ahead.” The new-found market enthusiasm for utes now places the Light Commercial market at the same level as Passenger, says Everett. Commercial goes mainstream Farmer Auto Village Group Managing Director Mike Farmer says that commercial vehicles nowadays are becoming more and more user-friendly and mainstream. “Commercial vehicles are also being used as day- to-day transport for families,” he says. “They are quite different to what they were a few years ago, when a commercial vehicle would be literally vinylfloored with no carpets, stereo or air con. “Nowadays, modern commercial vehicles are as luxurious, if not more so, than any previous traditional sedan or SUV.” That has meant a real crossover in who uses them and what they use them for, with the old stereotype of the commercial white van done and dusted. The new utes and commercial vehicles are being bought for many other reasons than purely commercial use, says Farmer.
