COMMERCIAL VEHICLES Commercial vehicle segment continues to take market share From page 21 The key change in the market is that sedans have obviously dropped hugely in recent years and SUVs have substantially taken up their mantle, he says “But at the end of the day markets will always change and we will always have an alteration in what is the key segment of the time,” he says. “I mean 20 years ago SUVs didn’t really exist and large sedans like the Nissan Maximas or Holden Commodores made up the majority of the biggest segment, which is now SUVs.” Farmer Auto’s Field Days campaign in May has always been focused around commercial vehicles, including vans and utes, and is about to launch the new Volkswagen V6 Amarok at a special price. “That will be one of the most impressive large V6 utes on the market because there aren’t many of them available,” says Famer. Farmer Auto VW Specialist Charlie Shepard says the company is positioning the Amarok as a well-specced six cylinder vehicle coming in below the $70,000 price point. “Everybody wants a bit more grunt and it’s going to be a lot of bang for your buck.” MTA’s Evertett says utes and the small, medium and BAY OF PLENTY BUSINESS NEWS April/May 2018 23 large SUVs are expected to continue to surge ahead. And while the light and small passenger segments are holding steady, medium and large cars are continuing to decline in popularity. In terms of new vehicle sales, SUV was the biggest sector in 2017 with 62,845 sales, Commercial was second with 50,142, and Passenger vehicles third with 45,030 sales. And the top five model rankings were held by one SUV, three utes and just the one car, the perennial Toyota Corolla. The Corolla continues to fight above its weight in a market dominated by SUVs and utes and managed to increase sales by 24 percent last year. Heavy hitters Meanwhile, the Heavy commercial vehicles segment has also been strong, and was up a striking 22 percent last year. MTA’s Everett says Heavy vehicle sales are traditionally seen as the bellwether of the economy. “People don’t move freight unless there has been something built or something sold,” he says. “Twenty-two percent growth in heavy vehicles is huge in anybody’s language.” TR Group Mount Maunganui Rental Manager Mark Purchase says the heavy vehicle market is definitely on the increase. “The whole country is buzzing in terms of the economy,” he says. “We’ve got 1300 vehicles on rent at the moment throughout New Zealand and more than 6000 on lease. We cater for anything and everything. We custom build vehicles to suit the customer and we’re doing pretty well.
