West Melton rider on world GP stage

WEST MELTON motorcycle
racer Hamish Macdonald is the
first Kiwi in 15 years to take
on the world’s best riders at the
World Enduro GP.
The 19-year-old finished
fourth in the youth 125cc category
in his debut event in Spain
last week.
The World Enduro GP is an
off-road motorcycle racing competition
with multiple rounds.
“This event is quite different
to our enduros at home where
we ride a lot of single tracks and
head into the bush,” Macdonald
said.
“The GP rounds are a series of
taped special tests, enduro test,
extreme test and cross test with
trail time in between,” he said.
“The Spanish round was two
190km days, with the special
tests completed three times each
day.”
Hamish is not short on
national titles or international
racing experience, but said the
opportunity to race a few rounds
of the Enduro GP was too good
to pass up.
“I’ve been racing enduros since
I was 13-years-old,” he said.
“When I was 15 we started
competing in the New Zealand
nationals with good results and
have taken the New Zealand
class title every year since.
“I have raced overseas at The
Red Bull Romaniacs, the toughest
extreme Enduro, and placed
third in silver class.”

Macdonald said he was thrilled
to be creating history 15 years
after the last Kiwi.
“I found out recently that
(fellow Kiwi) Paul Whibley had
competed over here and I am
with the same team so I’m very
honoured to be following on his
path,” Macdonald said.
The teenager said the trip was
about testing himself against
strong competition as he looks to
progress his fledgling career.
“This trip is giving me a inside
look into the European side of
racing, the teams are huge and
very well set up,” he said.
“Maybe if I do well, it could
lead to a spot on a team.
“I had another round in Portugal
(at the) weekend and will also
compete in two rounds of the
European Enduro,” Macdonald
said.
“I am still a youth in this sport
but the ultimate would be world
champion.”
