To either side of the fireplace more glass
doors open to what must be a favourite space
for Bookabach renters, the outdoor room
with its own open fireplace and grill plate for
cooking snags on a summer’s night. Or might
it be the private swimming cove, reached by a
short and steep path through ferns down the
southern cliff?
Guests in the two-bedroom bach are a mix
of what Ed terms, “New Zealanders shouting
themselves a nice weekend” to English,
American and European travellers.
“What guests tell us they most love is the
setting,” says Penny. The favoured guest book
description is ‘idyllic’. “And the peace and quiet,
listening to the birds and the waves. We’re so
tucked away and they can’t imagine there’d be
something like this here.”
Apart from five months when the Aitkens
lived in The Point themselves while their
neighbouring home, ‘Craigforth’, was repaired
post-earthquake, it has always been a holiday
rental, but they have dreams of retiring to it
one day themselves.
“We enjoy the simplicity of it,” says Ed.
Having always lived in old farmhouses, he
loves the clean lines, abundant light and well
designed, simply defined spaces. And, naturally,
those rammed earth walls.
