PHELPS HINTS AT EVOLUTION OF NASCAR
SPONSORSHIP MODEL, MONSTER ENERGY’S
CONTINUED ROLE
Welcome news that Monster
Energy has returned as the title
sponsor of NASCAR’s top division
came with a compelling hint
at what the future might hold, not just for
the powerful energy drink brand but for the
sport’s established sponsorship model in
general.
Steve Phelps, NASCAR’s Chief Operating
Officer, touched on the potential
evolution of stock-car racing’s sponsorship
structure in a Tuesday media roundtable,
which dovetailed with Monster Energy’s
one-year renewal with the sanctioning
body. Phelps said the push for the shorterterm
contract extension was mutual, as
both sides shifted focus toward establishing
a new framework for companies
involved in the sport.
“This is something we’ve been exploring
for a while,” Phelps said, noting that
the idea was first broached roughly three
years ago. “It’s more to do with this notion
that we want to make it easier for sponsors
to say yes. The entitlement position,
the things that we’re talking about, we’re
already requiring of our
entitlement partners
right now, but we’re
talking about broadening
it, so it’s not just
one company at the
top of the pyramid, but
it’s multiple categories,
multiple companies that
will allow us to make it
easier.
“We think there’s
greater value, frankly, for
the sponsors by doing
this, but it will take the
next level of collaboration
within the industry.”
Phelps said that the
sport already works with
sponsorship packages
that involve multiple
stakeholders, but that a new model could
be even more inclusive, bundling sponsorship
across various entities such as the
sanctioning body, race tracks and TV and
media partners.
That new look of corporate backing also
would be segmented into different levels
or tiers of participation, similar to other
sports. Though Phelps added that Monster
Energy’s return at the entitlement level in
18 // TJS 2018

NEWS
2020 was “highly unlikely,” he expects the
company to return as a key partner in a
different role. And Monster VP of Sports
Marketing Mitch Covington told the Sports
Business Journal on Tuesday that the
California-based company was open to
participating in the potential new structure,
saying, “We’re always open to good ideas
and we want to continue to be a part of the
sport one way or the other.”
Monster Energy joined the sport as an
entitlement partner in 2017, expanding
its brand’s reach to a new sports domain.
Monster has brought a maverick approach
in an effort to win over younger and more
diverse fans — an effort, Phelps said, that
NASCAR would maintain over the coming
seasons.
“That’s a journey that we’re going to
continue on,” Phelps said. “… We have to
continue on to make sure our content is
as strong as it can be that we’re pushing
through the digital and social channels. We
need to make sure that we continue to cater
to kids and to make sure our millennial
audience is happy. We have to continue the
gains that we’ve made with our Hispanic
fans, which has been significant over the
last three years. That journey doesn’t end.
And by the way, we have to make sure that
we’re nurturing the existing fan base that
we’ve had for many, many years. They’re
incredibly important.”
WIT MEMBER WINS
VOLVO TRUCK
Tiffany Hanna, professional driver and trainer
at Prime, Inc. is now an owneroperator thanks
to the Women In Trucking Association (WIT)
and Arrow Truck Sales. Hanna was selected
from the applicants who submitted an essay on
the importance of attracting more women into
the trucking industry. “Women need to know
they can be successful in trucking and can do
the job just as well, IF not better, than a man,”
Hanna wrote. She has been an advocate for
female drivers at Prime, Inc. and serves on the
Prime Driver Advisory Board. She is also active
with the Highway Diamonds celebration hosted
by Prime, Inc. annually to honor their female
drivers. Hanna is a U.S. Navy Veteran, and the
mother of 5 children. She resides in St. Peters,
Missouri. She has been at Prime, Inc. since
2014 and a trainer for the past four years. In
addition to the 2014 Volvo VNL670 from Arrow
DRIVING SCHOOLS
Schneider has partnered with Trainco Truck
Driving Schools to provide paid Commercial
Driver’s License (CDL) training for those interested
in a career in truck driving.
Schneider states it is making it easier for
someone to enter a career in professional truck
driving by providing the following all-expensepaid
course options with Trainco.
Three-week auto and manual transmission
class: Schneider and Trainco will get graduates
in the driver seat after three weeks, with the first
week being an auto permit assistance course
for those struggling to find time to receive their
permits. Tuition, transportation and lodging is
provided.
Two-week auto-transmission-only training
class: It’s time for manual clutching and shifting
to head on down the highway, and Schneider is
one of the few carriers able to guarantee drivers
are assigned an automated transmission truck
OOIDA TO FIGHT
EXCESSIVE PA TURN-
PIKE TOLLS IN COURT
The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers
Association has filed a class-action lawsuit
against the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission
for excessive toll increases that place an undue
burden on interstate commerce while improperly
diverting toll revenue to other projects
unrelated to the turnpike.
OOIDA and the National Motorists Association
have requested an injunction to halt the
turnpike from overcharging customers to pay
for non-turnpike projects, stop the turnpike
from borrowing money to help make PennDOT
38 // TJS 2018

TRUCKINGNEWS
payments, prevent
PennDOT from the spending
the money it received
from the turnpike, and
to refund the money to
turnpike users.
“The tolls charged far
exceed the value of the
use of turnpike and the
costs to maintain it,” said
Todd Spencer, acting
president and CEO of
OOIDA. “Truckers have
especially overpaid the
price at as much as 70
cents per mile.”
The lawsuit was filed
in the Middle District of
Pennsylvania in Harrisburg
and says that federal interstate commerce
laws for the turnpike hold that tolls can only
be used to maintain or expand the 359-mile
highway for which the tolls are levied.
TECH
INTEGRATING DATA
THE KENWORTH T680 DAY CAB EQUIPPED
WITH A HYDROGEN FUEL CELL
With an eye toward the future,
a zero-emission Kenworth T680
day cab equipped with a hydrogen
fuel cell is on display at the
2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES),
which opened Tuesday in Las Vegas.
The truck is part of the Paccar Innovations
booth exhibit.
It is the first time Paccar and Kenworth
have exhibited at the show, which draws
close to 200,000 visitors.
The vehicle is part of the Zero Emission
Cargo Transport (ZECT) demonstration
project managed through Southern California’s
South Coast Air Quality Management
District (SCAQMD).
The Kenworth T680 day cab’s fuel cell
combines compressed hydrogen gas and
air to produce electricity with only water
vapor emitted at the tailpipe. This electricity
can power the dual-rotor electric motor
to move the truck, or it can recharge the
lithium-ion batteries for use later. The
hybrid drive system manages the power
from the fuel cell to and from the batteries,
as well as the traction motors and other
components, such as the electrified power
steering and brake air compressor.
(To see the Kenworth T680 ZECT truck
in action during testing in Seattle, click
on the following link: https://youtu.be/
ShgYjFb4Pp8.)
“Kenworth’s hydrogen fuel-cell T680 is
a reality,” said Stephan Olsen, Kenworth
director of product planning. “The T680
has been running trials in the Seattle area
50 // TJS 2018

TECH
INTEGRATING DATA
and performing very well. The next step is
real-world testing with Total Transportation
Services Inc. (TTSI) at the ports of
Los Angeles and Long Beach in Southern
California.”
According to Olsen, the hydrogen fuelcell
based Kenworth T680 will have an
initial range of 150 miles, which makes it
ideal for short haul and port operations.
With a dual-rotor traction motor output
of 565 hp, the truck is capable of carrying
the legal gross
combination
weight of a Class 8
vehicle.
“Our testing
shows that this
truck performs
equally as well, if
not better, than
current diesel
trucks on the
market,” Olsen
said. “There is a
lot of promise, and
we see the day
where Kenworth’s
zero and near-zero
emission trucks could be a common sight
in regional operations. Kenworth is heavily
focused on the evaluation and development
of both zero and near-zero emission
solutions for the trucking industry.”
Olsen said the market is being driven
by progressive states, such as California,
where clean air is mandated.
To develop the hydrogen-based T680,
Kenworth is supported by $2.8 million in
funding under a larger grant from the U.S.
Department of Energy (DOE) Office
of Energy Efficiency and Renewable
Energy (EERE), with Southern California’s
South Coast Air Quality Management
District (SCAQMD) being the
prime applicant.
Project oversight is provided by
the Center for Transportation and
the Environment (CTE). Kenworth
is also working on a second project
under the larger program for DOE
and SCAQMD to develop a nearzero
emission-capable T680 day cab
using a near-zero natural gas engine
and generator to extend the battery
range.
