Local firefighter and Licensed Wildlife
Rehabilitator John Spofford makes way
for ducklings — and any other desperate
animal in need of help. Saving lives is all in a
day’s work for Spofford, who has more than 30
years animal rescue experience.
He also has been a firefighter for 22 years,
and he owns Spofford Automotive in Peabody.
Stroll into Spofford Automotive and a
gentle giant named Duke, a six-year-old Saint
walls of his office are countless newspaper
skunks, owls, cats, coyotes and raccoons to
name a few.
Create & Escape
this Mother’s Day
By Lindsey Ryan
Mother’s Day is around the
corner, a day to celebrate the
love you have for that special
person. As much as I love
Mother’s Day, I find that the
celebration is typically the same
each year, going to our favorite
spot for dinner. This year for
a pre-Mother’s Day celebration
I took my Mom to Create
& Escape in Peabody for a fun
Do It Yourself (DIY) sea glass
workshop.
Create & Escape opened its
doors to Peabody on March 15.
Sisters Wendy Minton, 46, and
Debbie Thibodeau, 59, loved
attending DIY workshops and
were inspired to create their
own workshop due to a negative
experience Thibodeau had.
“She said you know what we
could do this,” said Minton referring
to her sister. “I thought
she was nuts and the more we
talked about it the more we
thought ‘OK we could do this.’’
The sisters work full time, but
their creativity and passion for
crafts allows them to run their
own business on top of their
hectic schedules. They want
their crafty consumer to leave
happy, and they offer a variety
of Pinterest-inspired projects including
sea glass and wood signs.
Before my mom and I walked
in the door I spoke with Minton
and told her we would be interested
in the sea glass workshop.
When we walked in the
door I was surprised to see so
many varieties and colors of sea
glass, let alone all of the other
ocean-themed crafts. Minton
and Thibodeau had glass frames
ready for us on the table when
we arrived.
My mom and I decided to
design art using stencils, and
luckily for us there was a basket
full of stencils to choose from.
Of course one does not have to
choose stencils, but neither of
us are particularly artistically
inclined, so this part of the process
helped us. From the stencils
I chose a classic yet simple
pineapple, and my mom decided
to go with a more intricate
design of an angel.
With so many colors and
crafts to choose from, my mom
in particular had a difficult time
in the beginning trying to figure
out how she wanted to create
her art. Minton and Thibodeau
helped her through the entire
process, but did not interfere
with her creative expression,
allowing my mom to conceptualize
her art.
At one point my mom asked,
“Can I do this?” To which
Thibodeau replied, “Of course
you can, you can do anything
here.” I thought this was particularly
funny. Seeing my mom
being encouraged develop her
own personal creation was so
ANIMALS
involved with domestic animals,
mainly cats and dogs,”
said Spofford.
During that time Spofford
rescued many feral cats, trapping
them temporarily until
they could be neutered and returned
back to their colonies.
“I found that we could get
volunteers to do domestic animal
rescue but we couldn’t
find a lot of people to do wildlife,”
said Spofford. “ It was the
mid to late 90’s when I started
to get involved with wildlife...
once you get your rehabilitation
license with the state you can
start taking in orphaned or injured
wildlife for rehabilitation
purposes.”
Animals are taken into rehabilitation
just long enough for them
to heal so they can be released
without too much human involvement.
Spofford has rescued
animals from all over the state.
“We have a network of rehabilitators
across Massachusetts,
it’s not as many as we would
like.” he said. “We are always
looking to get more people involved.
It’s solely a volunteer
effort.”
Spofford runs a non-profit
volunteer organization, Five
Alarm Animal Rescue, with
Wildlife Rehabilitator LauraLee
Poirier.
“I enjoy working with animals
a lot. It’s a passion of
mine,” said Spofford.
Spofford has been called to
rescue pretty much any animal
you can think of, and even in
the middle of the night he will
get up to rescue an animal in
need.
Peabody Fire Department’s
Division 2 firefighters joined
Spofford to rescue a mother
duck and her ducklings from a
storm grate.
“We’ve all gone to these calls
before where the ducklings fall
in between the storm grates.
Luckily all of the firefighters in
Peabody back me 100 percent
in my animal rescues. They
help me in any way the can they
are a good group of guys,” said
Spofford. “Anytime I need help
all of them always offer help.
It’s not just me that does this,
all of them do.”
One of his most memorable
rescues was a coyote in Salem
who attempted to jump a fence,
but unfortunately had her hind
legs stuck between two picket
slats.
“Wildlife deserves every
chance of living just like everyone
else. I freed her from
the fence, I found she had no
injuries so there was no reason
to rehabilitate. She was just exhausted,
I freed her from the
fence and off she went,” he said.
Spofford wants residents to
know that for all wildlife it is
important to keep babies with
their mothers.
“What I say is try your best
to just give them the time they
need, six to seven weeks. Just
give them the time and they will
vacate,” he said.
Thankfully for Spofford,
many communities are supportive
of his work, and even
Mayor Edward A. Bettencourt
Jr. has written a citation on his
behalf thanking him for his
work in the city.
“I’ve always had a passion
for helping the underdogs, and
in this case it seems to be wildlife
the most,” said Spofford.
was unoccupied.
At 12:49 a.m. an officer responded
Careful: It’s “baby” season for wildlife
Early spring marks the beginning
of “Baby Season” for wildlife
- the time when people are
most likely to come upon wildlife
babies, often found alone,
without a parent anywhere in
sight.
Adults and children often
think these wildlife babies
have been abandoned by their
mother and it’s not unusual for
the public to want to protect and
nurture them.
It is illegal for people to care
for wildlife in Massachusetts
without a proper license. Almost
always, the mother is nearby.
Most wildlife parents leave
their babies alone returning
only one to several times a day
to feed them.
Adult wildlife do have a scent
that predators can smell, however
their babies do not. This is
a survival mechanism designed
by nature to protect wildlife
babies from being detected by
predators.
Unfortunately, most people
don’t know this.
With the best intentions,
the public will take what they
think is an “orphan” wild animal
and attempt to care for it,
not realizing they are kidnapping
a healthy and well-cared
for baby. Wild babies are often
offered food by the public that
makes them sick, or worse, results
in the baby dying. Doing
this is illegal in Massachusetts
without the proper permit.
Most wild babies can’t drink
from a bottle, an eye-dropper or
anything else a well-meaning
human comes up with. These
babies get dehydrated, or aspirate
fluid into their lungs,
then become weak and often
don’t survive. Those that live,
don’t develop as well as babies
raised by their wild mothers
and are not as well equipped
to defend themselves against
predators.
Once the baby shows
signs that he’s not doing
well, the person that brought
the wild baby home will
now start looking for help.
Consequently, making baby
season the busiest time of year
for wildlife rehabilitators.
Sadly, for many wild babies,
it’s too late for even the most
skilled wildlife rehabilitator to
save them. Most baby animals
will have a greater chance of
surviving if you simply leave
them alone.
On the other hand, if you
find a wild animal that is
bleeding, has an obvious injury,
or if you are unsure if it
needs help, snap a picture or
video with your cell phone
and contact a licensed wildlife
rehabilitator.
To find a licensed wildlife
rehabilitator, go to www.mass.
gov and use the search term;
wildlife rehabilitation. You
can send the picture or video
to the rehabilitator and let her
or him determine what to do
next.
For more information on this
and other wildlife topics, go
to the Wildlife Rehabilitators’
Association of Massachusetts
heartwarming and I saw her
building confidence in her design
process.
The entire process was incredibly
fun, but also relaxing. My
mom and I barely touched our
phones and I found myself getting
lost in my work. We had so
many laughs, and it was incredible
seeing our finished product, especially
because neither of us really
do any form of arts and crafts.
My pineapple turned out to be
simple, yet so perfect, just how I
wanted it to be. I only used three
colors of sea glass. The angel my
mom created was intricate, colorful
and completely unique. She
used sea glass, sand, starfish and
many more materials to create a
beautiful work of art.
Once we completed the art our
sea glass was set with a jewelry-grade
resin. Create & Escape
can do this in house, or you can
use their take home kit and do it
yourself if you prefer. We chose
do have them set our designs and
we picked them up the next day.
Through the Peabody Area
Chamber of Commerce Create
& Escape received a Lease it
Local grant, which aims to drive
more business to the downtown
area, and Create and Escape
gives 15 percent back to their
fundraisers.
“People really want to see
the downtown revived,” said
Minton.
Create & Escape is for men,
women and children of all ages,
and the encouraging environment
helps foster creativity. The
business is a family affair, the
sisters, their children, husbands
and other relatives all play
a part in the business. Some
family members have built the
tables, while some of the children
look for sea glass, as well
ASPIRIN MAY CUT BREAST CANCER RISK
We already know that a low-dose (81-milligram) aspirin tablet is associated
with a number of health benefits, including lowering heart attack risk. Now,
researchers have also found that taking low-dose aspirin three times per
week may lower women’s risk of developing breast cancer by up to 20%.
This finding is based on an analysis of data of 57,164 women between the
years 2005 and 2013. Overall, women who reported using low-dose aspirin
at least three times per week were 16% less likely to develop breast cancer
than those who used aspirin less frequently. When looking at breast cancer
subtypes, the risk of developing HR positive/HER2-negative breast cancer
was 20% lower. It is thought that aspirin’s anti-inflammatory effects may be
responsible.
Like any over-the- counter-medication, it’s important not to abuse aspirin
and to talk to your doctor about the safety of taking aspirin for other ailments
besides the conventional headache. Depending on what other prescription or
OTC drugs you’re taking, aspirin may be contraindicated in your particular
case. For more information, please call or visit VILLAGE PHARMACY in the
Colonial Shopping Center (781-334-3133).
HINT: “HR” status refers to whether or not the breast cancer cells contain
receptors for the hormones estrogen or progesterone, while “HER2” status is
whether or not cancer cells contain too many HER2 receptors, which can fuel
breast cancer growth.
MAY 10, 2018
By Ann Steriti
Periwinkles Food Shoppe
Anyone who has been
reading this column for a
while knows that I come
from a big Italian family,
where dinners served as the
meeting point for our family
of eight.
My mother relished this
daily ritual, serving up
homemade pasta, breads and
cookies. It is tempting to
write something light-hearted
or funny at this juncture, but
when I think about family
dinners, my thoughts deepen
and I appreciate just how important
they are to the fabric
of a family.
We ate only meals that
were made from scratch. We
did not know the meaning of
‘takeout’ food. When I occasionally
would eat dinner at a
friend’s house, I always was
aware it was different, not
disagreeable or bad, but not
the same. I would return to
our table the next night with
full appreciation of my mother’s
cooking and our family
tradition.
I wish I could report that
tradition is alive and well
in our home in Nahant, but
modern-day occupational reality
is a fact of life. When
you own a restaurant business
such as Periwinkles,
your husband is a firefighter
and your daughter is hellbent
on conquering the business
world, it is very difficult to
plan meals.
A big difference: My
mother would cook one meal
for eight people; I sometimes
cook three meals for
the three of us. Our daughter,
Alexa, doesn’t eat red meat.
My husband, Eddie, enjoys
a balanced meal including
meat, salad, vegetable and
starch. Me? Although I love
good food, having my family
together for a meal I prepared
from scratch, just like
my mother did, gives me the
greatest joy. It is a time for
us to reconnect at the end of
our day. Maybe that is why
Norman Rockwell’s illustration
of “The Family Dinner”
was one of the most popular
Saturday Evening Post covers
ever published.
Mother’s Day is the perfect
day to remember the
past, celebrate the present
and plant the seeds for future
family dinner traditions.
Time, togetherness and good
food allow family to share
conversations, plans, ideas
and love in a stress-free
atmosphere.
Here is a simple, springtime
favorite side-dish recipe from
my home.
Girls punch their ticket to state tournament
By Anne Marie Tobin
PEABODY — The Peabody
girls tennis team punched its
state tournament ticket, defeating
Lynn English 5-0
Thursday at home to qualify
for the Division 1 North
tournament.
With the win, the Tanners improved
to 8-1.
“We had only 15 matches
this year because I didn’t want
to gum up the works with all
these makeup games we usually
have in the spring,” said
coach Lorraine Benoit. “The
girls feel good knowing they
qualified after not making it
last year. Now we just want to
keep winning as many matches
as possible to get a higher seed.
In the past we have had unlucky
draws in the bracket, even when
we had 15-win seasons.”
Brooke Hodas got things
started, winning the first singles
match at love, 6-0, 6-0.
After Angela Ferrer won
at third singles, 6-2, 6-0,
Lindsey Kouroyen and Caitlin
Bettencourt prevailed at first
doubles, 6-1, 6-1, the Tanners
clinched the match..
Shaelyn Kelley completed
the singles sweep with a 6-3,
6-0 at second singles.
The second doubles match
was the closest of the day.
Becca Truong and Elizabeth
Newton took the first set easily,
6-2, and held on to take the
second set, 7-5.
The Tanners tennis program
has seen a huge return to
relevance.
“Things are really good for
Peabody tennis this year for
the girls and the boys as well,”
Benoit said. “The girls came
back with a huge rejuvenation,
clear in their heads knowing
that had to improve to compete.
They are being rewarded
for their commitment. They
know what they have to do and
are learning to come back after
losing the first set and win.
Benoit said the key to the
season has been at singles.
“All three singles players
have been playing great, and we
also are getting points from first
doubles from out mainstays,
April Horwarth and Lindsey,
and I’ve been able to rotate
several players at second doubles
when things like AP tests
and school cause kids to miss
matches.”
matches last week to improve
to 5-3 and pull two games
closer to clinching a spot in the
tournament.
At home Monday, the
Tanners lost a close one to visiting
Marblehead, 3-2. Despite
the loss, Peabody coach
Maureen Shea had nothing but
good things to say after the
match.
“Our guys kept their heads in
the match and had some great
shots and good play,” she said.
“I am very proud of our guys
today as we had nothing to lose.
Marblehead traditionally has
a strong program. I knew we
had a strong chance at first and
second singles, so our challenge
was trying to steal a win at third
singles or in one of the doubles
matches. Today just wasn’t that
day.”
Higgins Middle School seventh-grader
Paul Neal won
easily at first singles 6-0, 6-2,
while the Tanners’ Alex Nadeau
also rolled in the second singles
match, 6-0, 6-2. Kyle White
came up short in the third singles
match 6-2, 6-0.
“Paul had a good day and
handled his business as usual,
while Alex faced a strong opponent
who gave him a challenge
but he stayed focused and shut
him down,” said Kelly.
Max Leete and Jason Davis
went down at love at first
doubles at love 6-0, 6-0 while
Calvin Anton and Angelo Ferrer
fell 6-0, 6-2 in the second doubles
match.
“I saw a lot of good things at
third singles and on the doubles
courts,” said Kelly. “The boys
are improving every day and
today we went out and wons
some points and took a few
games that people didn’t expect
to happen. I consider today a
good day.”
Peabody 5, Salem 0
On May 2 at home, the
Tanners cruised to a 5-0 win
over an undermanned Salem
squad, which brought only five
players to the match and had
to forfeit the second doubles
match.
Paul Neal defeated Ryan
Farley 6-0, 6-0 at first singles,
while Alex Nadeau defeated
Tim Farley 6-0, 6-0 at second
singles. Kyle White completed
the singles sweep with a 6-1,
6-4 win over Clay Ruffin at
third singles. Jason Davis and
Mikey Jeannotte went the distance
at first doubles, needing
three sets to pull out a 6-2, 3-6,
6-2 win.
PHOTO | ANNE MARIE TOBIN
Elizabeth Newton (above) and her doubles partner Becca Truong won their second doubles
match over Lynn English, part of a sweep of the Bulldogs. The win qualified the Tanners for the
state tournament.

St. Mary’s baseball beats Fenwick
By Harold Rivera
LYNN — The first meeting
between the Bishop Fenwick
and St. Mary’s baseball teams
went to the Crusaders earlier this
season. Monday night in battle
No. 2, the Spartans came ready
to play, rolling to a 12-5 win at
Fraser Field.
Peabody’s John Mulready
paced St. Mary’s offense, going
2-for-2 with one RBI, one run
scored and two walks.
Fenwick starter David Furtado
went 2 1/3 innings before handing
the ball to reliever Max Gonzalez.
Gonzalez, a freshman,
pitched 2 2/3 and Sam Lynch
tossed the sixth.
“David can’t go forever,” Crusaders
coach Russ Steeves said.
“It’s just one of those games we
kind of have to let go. Alex is
going to be great. We wanted to
get him used to different situations,
so that was good.”
After a scoreless inning and a
half, the Spartans got things going
in the bottom of the second
and took a 5-0 lead.
Mulready rifled a RBI double
in the bottom of the third. A
Fenwick infield error allowed
Mulready to tack on another run,
stretching St. Mary’s lead to 10-
0.
While the offense pushed runs
across, Spartans starting pitcher
Pacheco took care of the rest.
Spartans’ starter Lee Pacheco
kept the Crusaders off the board
through his five innings of work.
He struck out three, allowed
three hits and walked one.
Fenwick scored twice in the
top of the sixth on a sac-fly from
Ethan Belt and a RBI single
from Trey Deloury.
“I’m happy we didn’t quit,”
Steeves said. “We battled back
at the end. It was one of those
days where we made a lot of errors.
We have to get back at it
and work on the fundamentals.”
Central League rival Bishop
Ten runs were more than
Fenwick coach Paul Lyman.
“It’s tough for a team like us
Tanner girls hang
on, beat Methuen
By Anne Marie Tobin
The Peabody girls lacrosse
team nearly let a large lead slip
away Monday at home, but the
Tanners had just enough left in
the tank to hang on to a 10-9 win
over Methuen.
Colleen Crotty scored the
eventual game-winning goal
with about 17 minutes left in the
game, the Rangers made it interesting
by holding the Tanners
scoreless the rest of the way.
Methuen pulled to within one,
10-9 with 2:39 to go, but Amber
Kiricoples won a huge draw to
enable Peabody to run out the
clock
“We had possession, we won
the draws but just kept giving it
back to them, just too many unforced
turnovers, too many times
throwing it away,” said coach
Dennis Desroches. “That draw
was huge, because possession
was going to be a monster and it
was important to get possession.”
Crotty and Olivia Kiricoples
had four goals and one assist
each, while Maddy Lomasney
and Hailee Lomasney had a goal
and an assist.
Olivia Lavalle made seven
saves, including a key one late on
a free position shot.
Peabody improved to 9-1 and
needs one more win to clinch a
spot in the tournament.
Gloucester 15-3 on Saturday afternoon.
Crotty led the Tanners offensive
attack with five goals and two assists,
while fellow Olivia Kiricoples
had four goals and two assists.
Haliee Lomasney had two
goals and one assist, Alyssa Saraceni
and freshman Hailie Baker
each had one goal and one assist,
and sophomore Abigail Ryder
and freshman Amber Kiricoples
each had one goal.
Defensively, junior Catherine
of Aja Alimonte, Bridget O’Connell
well for the Tanners. Sydney Nagle
and Lavalle split time in net.
Tanners
can’t
overcome
Falcons
By Anne Marie Tobin
PEABODY — It was a tale of two
halves Saturday afternoon at the Peabody
High. Visiting Minnechaug Regional
won the first half, 8-1, but the
Tanners owned the second half and
made a game of it, outscoring the Falcons
5-2, before going down 10-6.
Stephen Ell led the offense with
three goals, while Colby Therrien had
two goals and Connor McCarron had
one.
“We came out flat and you figure the
team that had to drive two-plus hours on
a school bus would be the ones to come
out flat, but that was us,” said coach
Greg Welch.
“Again, we need to play the whole
game not just a half. We were in it, I told
them at halftime that lacrosse is a game
of runs and they made their run, so we
need to make ours.”
Peabody came out strong in the second
half and shaved the deficit down
to 8-3 after Ell scored a pair of goals
within the first six minutes. McCarron
found the back of the net at the 7:28
mark on a man-up opportunity, then
30 seconds later, Nick Patturelli found
Therrien alone in front to make it 8-5.
After the Falcons made it 9-5 with
last week.
3:23 to go, Therrien answered with his
second tally of the day with just under
a minute to play. Minnechaug added
an insurance goal with 12 seconds left.
Austin Leggett and Troy Campos
split time in goal with Leggett starting
and Campos handling the second half.
Campos made several key stops to
keep the Tanners in the game, a couple
when Peabody was a man down.
“It was a tough first half for Austin,
which he is allowed to because he has
been so fantastic for us all year and he
really needed some time off, but then
Troy really stepped up,” said Welch.
“Sometimes you need to switch things
up to get that spark and Troy was definitely
that spark today.”
Peabody dropped to 5-7 with the
loss.
Fenwick girls
lose in OT
By Mike Alongi
PEABODY — It took 50 minutes plus three overtimes,
but a Codi Butt goal in sudden-death overtime
gave the St. Mary’s girls lacrosse team a 10-9 win over
Bishop Fenwick (3-8) at Donaldson Stadium May 2.
With the win, the Spartans sweep the season series with
Fenwick for the first time in program history.
Peabody’s Mady Hentosh had one goal and one assist.
For Fenwick, Cailyn Wesley and Fran Carpinella each
had three goals, while Rachel Boylan, Brynn Bertucci
and Brigid Waldron each had one goal.
It was an up-and-down game for both sides. The Spartans
jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first half, but
the Crusaders were able to battle back from that deficit
to tie the game by the middle of the second half. The
Crusaders took their first lead of the game in the first
overtime period, but St. Mary’s tied it in the second
overtime. For both sides, mental toughness was a huge
component.
“I was just very impressed with the way our team kept
competing no matter what, even when calls weren’t going
our way and when we had key players out of the
game,” Fenwick coach Lindsey Congdon said. “There
was just a ton of hustle and heart on both ends of the
field today.”
Trailing 7-3, Fenwick went on a three-goal run behind
tallies from Carpinella, Wesley and Waldron to tie
the score at 7-7. The intensity picked up in regulation’s
final minutes, and Hentosh was able to put St. Mary’s
back on top with 4:46 to go. But Fenwick never let up,
as Carpinella found the back of the net with just 2:24 to
go tying the score at 8-8. Fenwick had one final opportunity
to score when Carpinella earned a free position
shot just a few yards from the St. Mary’s goal with only
nine seconds remaining. Carpinella had a clean look at
the net and made a good shot, but Spartans goalie Lauren
Vaccaro made a big save, forcing overtime.
