10 WEEKLYNEWS.NET - 978-532-5880 MAY 10, 2018 St. Mary’s baseball beats Fenwick By Harold Rivera LYNN — The first meeting between the Bishop Fenwick and St. Mary’s baseball teams went to the Crusaders earlier this season. Monday night in battle No. 2, the Spartans came ready to play, rolling to a 12-5 win at Fraser Field. Peabody’s John Mulready paced St. Mary’s offense, going 2-for-2 with one RBI, one run scored and two walks. Fenwick starter David Furtado went 2 1/3 innings before handing the ball to reliever Max Gonzalez. Gonzalez, a freshman, pitched 2 2/3 and Sam Lynch tossed the sixth. “David can’t go forever,” Crusaders coach Russ Steeves said. “It’s just one of those games we kind of have to let go. Alex is going to be great. We wanted to get him used to different situations, so that was good.” After a scoreless inning and a half, the Spartans got things going in the bottom of the second and took a 5-0 lead. Mulready rifled a RBI double in the bottom of the third. A Fenwick infield error allowed Mulready to tack on another run, stretching St. Mary’s lead to 10- 0. While the offense pushed runs across, Spartans starting pitcher Pacheco took care of the rest. Spartans’ starter Lee Pacheco kept the Crusaders off the board through his five innings of work. He struck out three, allowed three hits and walked one. Fenwick scored twice in the top of the sixth on a sac-fly from Ethan Belt and a RBI single from Trey Deloury. “I’m happy we didn’t quit,” Steeves said. “We battled back at the end. It was one of those days where we made a lot of errors. That wasn’t a problem Monday. The Spartans came to play and then some, scoring four runs in the first inning en route to a 10-3 rout over Catholic Central League rival Bishop Fenwick. “It was definitely better than Friday,” Licata said, “but I still think we need that killer mentality. Unfortunately for the Crusaders, that was as close as they would come in the game. St. Mary’s made it 5-1 in the top of the second, then added five more in the third to take a commanding 10-1 lead Fenwick got two runs back in the bottom of the third, one on Tessa Palermo’s single that scored Norton (who had walked); and the other on an infield hit by pitcher Nicole Modica, whose infield single brought home Palermo. MAY 10, 2018 Tanner girls hang on, beat Methuen By Anne Marie Tobin The Peabody girls lacrosse team nearly let a large lead slip away Monday at home, but the Tanners had just enough left in the tank to hang on to a 10-9 win over Methuen. Colleen Crotty scored the eventual game-winning goal with about 17 minutes left in the game, the Rangers made it interesting by holding the Tanners scoreless the rest of the way. Methuen pulled to within one, 10-9 with 2:39 to go, but Amber Kiricoples won a huge draw to enable Peabody to run out the clock “We had possession, we won the draws but just kept giving it back to them, just too many unforced turnovers, too many times throwing it away,” said coach Dennis Desroches. “That draw was huge, because possession was going to be a monster and it was important to get possession.” Crotty and Olivia Kiricoples had four goals and one assist each, while Maddy Lomasney and Hailee Lomasney had a goal and an assist. Olivia Lavalle made seven saves, including a key one late on a free position shot. Peabody improved to 9-1 and needs one more win to clinch a spot in the tournament. Peabody 15, Gloucester 3 Crotty hit the first big milestone in her young lacrosse career over the weekend, scoring her 100th career point as the Tanners girls lacrosse team took down host Gloucester 15-3 on Saturday afternoon. Crotty led the Tanners offensive attack with five goals and two assists, while fellow Olivia Kiricoples had four goals and two assists. Haliee Lomasney had two goals and one assist, Alyssa Saraceni and freshman Hailie Baker each had one goal and one assist, and sophomore Abigail Ryder and freshman Amber Kiricoples each had one goal. Defensively, junior Catherine Manning and the freshman trio of Aja Alimonte, Bridget O’Connell and Jordyn Collins all played well for the Tanners. Sydney Nagle and Lavalle split time in net. Peabody is now 8-1 on the season. Peabody 15, Medford 3 At Peabody Friday, the Tanners led 9-1 at halftime and coasted to an easy win. Olivia Kiricoples (assist), Maddy Lomasney and Crotty netted hat tricks, while Hailee Lomasney had a four-point day with two goals and two assists. DINING DIRECTORY Productive week for track teams By Anne Marie Tobin It was a productive week for the Peabody boys and girls track teams. Saturday night at the Weston Twilight Invitational at Regis College and Weston High, Connor Ramos and Jolene Murphy turned in the Tanners’ top efforts with runner-up finishes, Ramos in the discus (147-11) and Murphy in the 400 (59.42). Other top-20 finishers for the boys were Dariel Canela, fourth in the shot put (48-02); Kamani Jackson, 12th in the 400 hurdles (1:00.21) and 13th in the 110 hurdles (15.94); Jacob Hawthorne, 16th in the triple jump (40-03); Edgar Dossantos, 19th in the 400 (52.41); and Shane Braz, 20th in the 2-mile (9:50.79). For the girls, Courtney Kline finished ninth in the discus (97- 11) and Chouinard was 20th in the javelin (86-06).
