12 Tanners can’t overcome Falcons By Anne Marie Tobin PEABODY — It was a tale of two halves Saturday afternoon at the Peabody High. Visiting Minnechaug Regional won the first half, 8-1, but the Tanners owned the second half and made a game of it, outscoring the Falcons 5-2, before going down 10-6. Stephen Ell led the offense with three goals, while Colby Therrien had two goals and Connor McCarron had one. “We came out flat and you figure the team that had to drive two-plus hours on a school bus would be the ones to come out flat, but that was us,” said coach Greg Welch. “Again, we need to play the whole game not just a half. We were in it, I told them at halftime that lacrosse is a game of runs and they made their run, so we need to make ours.” Peabody came out strong in the second half and shaved the deficit down to 8-3 after Ell scored a pair of goals within the first six minutes. McCarron found the back of the net at the 7:28 mark on a man-up opportunity, then 30 seconds later, Nick Patturelli found Therrien alone in front to make it 8-5. Minnechaug added an insurance goal with 12 seconds left. Austin Leggett and Troy Campos split time in goal with Leggett starting and Campos handling the second half. Campos made several key stops to keep the Tanners in the game, a couple when Peabody was a man down. “It was a tough first half for Austin, which he is allowed to because he has been so fantastic for us all year and he really needed some time off, but then Troy really stepped up,” said Welch. “Sometimes you need to switch things up to get that spark and Troy was definitely that spark today.” Peabody dropped to 5-7 with the loss. DINING DIRECTORY Fenwick girls lose in OT By Mike Alongi PEABODY — It took 50 minutes plus three overtimes, but a Codi Butt goal in sudden-death overtime gave the St. Mary’s girls lacrosse team a 10-9 win over Bishop Fenwick (3-8) at Donaldson Stadium May 2. With the win, the Spartans sweep the season series with Fenwick for the first time in program history. Peabody’s Mady Hentosh had one goal and one assist. For Fenwick, Cailyn Wesley and Fran Carpinella each had three goals, while Rachel Boylan, Brynn Bertucci and Brigid Waldron each had one goal. It was an up-and-down game for both sides. The Spartans jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first half, but the Crusaders were able to battle back from that deficit to tie the game by the middle of the second half. The Crusaders took their first lead of the game in the first overtime period, but St. Mary’s tied it in the second overtime. For both sides, mental toughness was a huge component. “I was just very impressed with the way our team kept competing no matter what, even when calls weren’t going our way and when we had key players out of the game,” Fenwick coach Lindsey Congdon said. “There was just a ton of hustle and heart on both ends of the field today.” Trailing 7-3, Fenwick went on a three-goal run behind tallies from Carpinella, Wesley and Waldron to tie the score at 7-7. The intensity picked up in regulation’s final minutes, and Hentosh was able to put St. Mary’s back on top with 4:46 to go. But Fenwick never let up, as Carpinella found the back of the net with just 2:24 to go tying the score at 8-8. Fenwick had one final opportunity to score when Carpinella earned a free position shot just a few yards from the St. Mary’s goal with only nine seconds remaining. Carpinella had a clean look at the net and made a good shot, but Spartans goalie Lauren Vaccaro made a big save, forcing overtime.
