May
2018
My fellow Board member, Natalie Schembra, our friend Rachael Bradley, and I
just spent a fabulous girls' weekend at the Landrover Kentucky 3-Day Event. I
was amazed to hear the announcer say there were over 1,000 volunteers making
it all run smoothly and it gave me inspiration and fuel to help our FRC volunteers
do the best job ever! Volunteers rock and we are forever grateful to everyone
who helps the FRC in all its endeavors. Maybe we should call it the Year of the
Volunteer!
FRC Community Outreach
March 2018:
Grading & Gravel at Harmon Field Show Office
One of the perks of being an FRC member is that a portion of your membership dues goes to
support our Community Outreach Program. A central part of the
mission of the Foothills Riding Club is to promote the understanding
and enjoyment of equestrian activities for our community. We
achieve this in a variety of ways, and most recently, the FRC
partnered with Hyder Construction Company to grade and spread
gravel around the Harmon Field show office. No one liked to slog
through the mud in white breeches to check in before the show, so
this project was proposed to help with the puddles that had
accumulated after such a rainy year!
Hyder did quite a bit of grading to improve the drainage around the
show office before
spreading gravel that
will help reduce the erosion around rings caused
by foot traffic. The work done will prevent the
mud from returning in the future as well. The
total cost of the project was around $1000.
Harmon Field manager Lewis Pack was very
pleased with the upgrades. This project not
only benefits the members of the Foothills
Riding Club, it will benefit everyone who uses
the facilities at Harmon Field. A huge thanks
to our board member and Community Outreach Chair, Hatsie Goodrich for putting this together!

March 4 th Cross Country Schooling
Riders are
allowed to
meander through the course at their own pace and
practice obstacles multiple times. Obstacles include
things like banks, ditches, logs, coupes, and even a
‘Morris the Horse’ jump! Cross country jumps tend to be
solid compared to those in the ring, and might be set on
The weather was warm and sunny for the first FRC Cross Country
Schooling Day of the season at FENCE! There were over 51 teams
came out to practice the course. The footing was great and the
horses definitely seemed to be enjoying themselves. For schooling
days, the cross country course is set with a variety of jumps
ranging from starter size (about 18”) through larger Training Level
jumps over three feet tall. There is something fun for everyone, no
matter what level you ride.
slopes to be jumped up or downhill. Teams could reserve a special
time to practice in the newly renovated water complex, too!
This event was a unique opportunity to those who plan
to compete in
the FENCE Horse
Trials coming up
in April.
Participants
were able to
introduce their
horses to the
course and all
the new
elements with their trainers present before riding in a judged event.
Please check out the FRC Events page (Website or Facebook) for future
Cross Country Schooling dates!

The author Claire Smith will also bring books to sell. Additionally, the book can also be found on Amazon.com.
The brief summary for the book is: “A compelling story of determination, resilience, and persistence in the face of
tremendous loss, this memoir is bound to be inspiring, particularly for the many individuals who are forced to confront
life-altering challenges.”
Claire was a successful equestrian who suffered a severe injury which essentially ended her horse riding career. She
will present the book and give a talk about her experiences. She will answer any questions anyone might have about
not just the physical/emotional recovery process, but will also be willing to share the process of writing and publishing a
book, or any other questions our members might have, really.

FRC April Seminar: Truck and Trailer Maintenance
Presented by Jim Zygmont, of See Horse Trailer Repair in Tryon, NC
We all want to keep our horses safe, especially while they are riding in the trailer. My barnmates
love to make fun of the fact that I basically cover my horse in bubble wrap before every
trailer trip! While I think about banging hocks and bumping heads, it is important to remember
that the horse trailer itself also needs attention and care to make sure that it is a safe place to
transport our hard-working horses. For this reason, Foothills Riding Club’s April
Educational Seminar focused on Truck and Trailer Maintenance. Our presenter was the
amazing and informative, Jim Zygmont, of See Horse Trailer Repair in Tryon, NC.
The presentation began with some information on the basics. First, connecting your trailer to
truck with the tow ball. One must make sure that they are choosing the proper size ball, and
how to properly connect the safety chains (crossing them under the tongue for a bumper-pull,
and NOT crossing them for a gooseneck). These connective parts do need some upkeep to
stay functional, especially lubrication. Jim showed attendees how to lubricate the parts that
will keep your trailer safely connected to your truck.
The discussion then turned to weight distribution when a rig is in operation and how to
optimize the weight distribution when a trailer is connected to your vehicle. It is important to
make sure that weight is evenly distributed as it will help to improve gas mileage, wear on tires,
and general movement of the rig. Jim also noted how important it is to make sure that you
respect the weight limits for both your truck and trailer.
Tires are a very important component of a safe rig. Jim explained what to look for in a trailer
tire and how often you should change your tires. Other tire topics were how many spares you
should carry at any given time, to keep a tire gauge with you at all times (funny how you never
have one when you need it?!), and making sure to keep tires inflated to the right pressure and
respecting their weight limits. How to prevent dry rot was something that most attendees
admitted they don't address often enough. My Zygmont discussed the differences in trailer
suspensions, for example, different types that a trailer can have and how the suspension can
impact your ability to use items such as “Trailer Aid.” If unable to use the Trailer Aid then he
offered advice on how to identify the right trailer jack for your rig. They are not a one size fits
all kind of accessory.
Next there was a discussion about the types of flooring and how maintenance differs with
each. Urine on the trailer floor is a big issue as well. Certain materials react to it differently
and precautions must be made to make sure it won't rot the footing. Jim explained how often
to inspect, and to rinse and dry trailer flooring.
Information on electric trailer brake controllers was discussed, and what you should feel when
you set the brakes, including a breakdown on how they function. Over lubricating the bearings
can sometimes cause the brakes to fail from leaked grease. There was a real-time

demonstration of how the trailer brakes work (electronically) to emphasis how setting the
braking level can impact the vehicle and the trailer behind it. The main message is that you
cannot just “set” your trailer brakes one time. Each time they must be adjusted for the vehicle,
the trailer, and the load. If you consistently use the same tow vehicle, with no variation in the
trailer and its load, then you may be able to set the electric brakes. However, the setting for an
empty trailer varies greatly compared to a full trailer.
Jim provided a sheet of annual maintenance items - what to inspect and what to test. These
handouts will be available to all members to download once they are one the FRC website.
They include information on setting the electric trailer brake controllers, trailer tire lifespan and
maintenance, and bumper pull tow ball height. Many of these things are applicable to any type
of trailer - be it a horse, cargo or boat trailer. In addition to maintenance and repairs, Jim also
highlighted areas where advances in technology could be safer at a minimal cost. For
instance, investing in new trailer lights - suggesting to replace the brake lights & tail lights with
LED lights optimizing your visibility.
A huge thanks to Jim for coming out to teach our members about truck & trailer maintenance!
Mr. Zygmont graciously donated his $100 presenter’s honorarium to Lennie’s Kids, a
local nonprofit that helps sick animals. The raffle prize, a Trailer Safety Kit, provided by Mr.
Zygmont, was awarded to Barrie Coffin, Congratulations! Join us next month at FENCE for a
discussion on Trail Riding Etiquette and Safety on May 16th.

FRC Scholarship Reminder
One of the perks of being an FRC member, is that you are
eligible to apply for one of the four $250 Member
Scholarships that we award each year. Scholarships can
be used in a variety of ways. In the past, they have been
used for riders to defer the cost of going to events such as
championship competitions, rare educational opportunities,
or clinics applicable to your discipline. There are only a few
requirements to be considered for a scholarship. You must be a member at the time of your
application, and you also must be willing to share the knowledge you gained through your
scholarship experience with the club in some way (ideas must be approved by the scholarship
committee). This could be a short presentation at one of our seminars, info table or
infographic at shows, newsletter report, etc.
Want to apply for a scholarship, but not sure if your endeavor would be approved- don’t worry!
The application is short, sweet and to the point. If there happens to be an influx of applicants
at any deadline, volunteer service to the FRC in the current and preceding membership year
will be considered when awarding scholarships. Application deadlines are April 1 st , July 1 st ,
October 1 st , and January 1 st depending on the date of the event. Any member is eligible to
apply!
First FRC Scholarship Recipient of 2018
Congratulations to FRC Member Hailey Morris, who was
awarded the first Scholarship of 2018! Hailey is the captain of
the UNCA Equestrian Team and a very talented rider. She has
qualified for Regionals in Novice Fences and Flat for the
Intercollegiate Horse Show Association. Hailey will be using
the $250 FRC Scholarship to defer the costs of attending the
regional competition. Every scholarship recipient is required to
give back to the club in a way that will show case their
experiences. Hailey plans to organize a photo seminar to detail
her journey to regionals!
FRC is proud to be able to award four scholarships annually. In
order to qualify for an FRC Scholarship, you must be a current
FRC member at the time of your application. Additionally, your
request must be for a rare educational opportunity or clinic or
a championship competition purpose directly related to your
riding discipline. In exchange, scholarship recipients must give
back to the club in some tangible way. Please don’t hesitate to
apply!

Spotlight
On Our Members
This month we have an article submitted by Jenna Marshman
I spent the weekend volunteering at the WEG Dressage Test Event at TIEC and the one thing I
noticed more than anything else, was all the colorful, blingy outfits that the competitors were
wearing. There were shadbellies with sequins covering the entire collar & trim, helmets with
red & blue Swarovski crystals, and boots with colored patent leather trim! It seems like the
options for riders are endless these days, especially if you have the means to shop for the
high-end brands. Part of the reason I had taken such notice to the rider’s attire is because
they all looked so unique, but mainly because I am so jealous of all the options there are for
riders these days! I grew up showing in my sister’s hand-me-downs that were too big and
boasted small patches that my mom had sewn on all over the place to give them a longer
life. My jacket was black, plain, wool and I wore it in every season, for every discipline, until I
was old enough to buy my own. Even then, my only options were really black, navy, and or
hunter green.
Today, when you stroll through The Farm House or your local tack shop, the options are
almost overwhelming. I was able to pick up a few tips from the judges over the weekend about
how your show clothes and tack affect the success of your test. First, it is very important to

make sure that all your tack is on correctly and not crooked one way or another. The judge
would never take off points for crooked tack, but it can create an optical illusion, maybe
causing the judge to think that your horse is crooked instead. We saw two upper-level riders
that had tack malfunctions on just the first day of the show, so this happens to the best of us!
The next thing to mention is to make sure that your show clothes are ‘legal.’ There are certain
specifications for show clothes that limit the colors and type of clothes that are allowed. Some
people can interpret these guidelines very differently, especially the guideline that a coat
should be a ‘conservative’ color. I had seen colored jackets and boots throughout the day in
Burgundy, dark green, variations of blue, then all the sudden we had a rider enter the ring
wearing a bright teal shadbelly on a chestnut horse. I was kind of scared what might happen, I
would not consider teal to be a conservative color, but the pair did look flashy and well put
together. The judge exclaimed, “look at that coat?!” Then told me to flip over to the collectives
section to write something down. She wanted to make a note to compliment the rider on their
showout!
I thought it was the perfect opportunity to ask her about her thoughts on all the bling, patent
leather, and vibrant colors that riders are wearing. She said that if you come into the ring with
all the bling, than you had better have a ride to back it up. Sometimes when a rider presents
and has on very flashy clothes, it can create an expectation that their test will be just as
exuberant. If it is not, then there can be a sense of unfulfillment. She reminded me that in no
way would a rider’s clothes affect the way she actually judged the test based on the directives
and competency of the movements, but it doesn't help if your outfit does not match your skill
level or level of preparation. I asked her to elaborate on the concept of acceptable
‘conservative’ colors and she said that while she would not generally consider a teal shadbelly
as conservative, it really went well with her horse and was coordinated well with the rest of her
outfit, so she didn’t think it was out of context.
So next time you are shopping for show clothes, get something that makes you feel and look
great! Make sure to consider the color of your mount and how your clothes will look when you
are on top of your horse. If you don’t have your own horse and might be showing on school
horses, make sure to go with the traditional black or navy to make sure that you will not clash
with different coat colors. Keep the bling to a minimum unless you are coming in hot! And
don’t forget, FRC shows are schooling shows, so we don’t really mind what you are wearinghalf
chaps or polo shirts are totally fine!
