Celebrating Extraordinary Children Join us for highlights from an action packed Summer term at the Dulwich Prep Open Morning SPONSORED FEATURE Dulwich Prep Cranbrook is holding an open morning on Saturday 23 June for prospective families to have a look round and try out some of the activities on offer. Try your hand at coding in the IT room, join in tying knots, pitching a tent and lighting a fire with Dulwich Outdoors Club, get creative in the art and DT workshops. Or join the audience for our drama performances and pop-up musical concerts. Highlights of an action packed Summer Term at Dulwich Prep Cranbrook so far include: CREATIVE HAPPENINGS IN THE ART DEPARTMENT: › Nash House (Nursery and Reception) have created jellyfish paper lanterns, dyed fabrics, and made fish out of willow and tissue to form a gigantic chandelier ‘under sea’ installation – it has major wow factor! › Little Stream projects range from Pop Art style number paintings using family birthdays inspired by Jasper Johns in Year 2, and pen and ink self portraits in the style of the ‘Green Man’ or ‘Mother Earth’ using collage in Year 4. › The Year 8 Leavers’ Project this year is based around selfies and an exploration of identity using large canvases, photography and embroidery, inspired by Maurizio Azerio. DRAMATIC EVENTS: › Year 5 are busy rehearsing their showcase performance for parents and friends. Designed to build confidence and help every child feel the thrill of applause, the whole year group will be involved in this exciting production. › The child-led Year 8 Leavers’ Revue is devised and produced by the children later this term, and promises to be a memorable evening. The Drama Department are celebrating an amazing 12 Drama and Performing Arts Scholarships to leading senior schools. EXPRESS YOURSELF IN MUSIC: › Jazz Band on Tour: The Dulwich Prep Jazz Band will be performing at the Wealden Times Summer Fair. The children will be performing pieces including Balderdash Blues, a simple swing blues where everyone takes a solo. › The Summer Concert in May gave opportunities for all our children to express themselves musically and build confidence in a supportive environment. From the kinder horn to the ukulele, jazz band to rock band, tribe music to chamber choir, it’s very important that there is, at the very least, something for everyone. SPORTING HIGHLIGHTS: › Boys’ and Girls’ Cricket: Fresh from their successful cricket tour to the West Country in April, both the boys and girls cricket teams are hosting tournaments at Dulwich this term, alongside their regular fixtures. Girls’ Cricket is an exciting innovation which has been embraced by the children to sit alongside the existing sports provision. › Triathlon at Dulwich: Triathlon is incredibly popular, with large numbers of children practising the three disciplines in Tri Club every week in preparation for the IAPS National Schools’ Triathlon, which the school is hosting for the third year in a row this June. › Inspire Alternative Sports Programme: For those that don’t wish to participate in matches on Wednesdays, the school has introduced an exciting alternative programme of outdoor activities for children in Years 7 and 8. Last term included climbing, assault courses at a local outward bounds centre, and mountain biking at Bedgebury Forest and around Bewl Water. This term it is all things water based including sailing, kayaking and raftbuilding at Bewl Water. DIGITAL GENIUSES › All the children now learn a programming language called Python and children as young as Year 1 are introduced to coding within their Computing lessons. Live feeds and connections aid reflection on the lessons taught. › The fantastically popular Coding Club this term has seen children create computer games and code BBC Micro:bits. › Media Club and especially Dulwich TV is very popular. Children use digital editing software, report on news around the school using their iPads, and create content for our insider’s guide to all things at school, Dulwich TV.
