<strong>the</strong> property <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family name 'Freud':<br />

Just as Ernst, <strong>in</strong> recall<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> object (mo<strong>the</strong>r, th<strong>in</strong>g, whatever) to himself, immediately comes<br />

himself to recall himself, <strong>in</strong> an immediately supplementary operation, so <strong>the</strong> speculat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>in</strong> describ<strong>in</strong>g or recall<strong>in</strong>g this or that, recalls himself. And <strong>the</strong>reby makes what is<br />

called his text, enters <strong>in</strong>to a contract with himself <strong>in</strong> order to hold onto all <strong>the</strong> str<strong>in</strong>gs/sons [fils] <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> descendance. No less than <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ascendance. An <strong>in</strong>contestable ascendance. 48<br />

Re<strong>in</strong>scribed with its subject, <strong>the</strong> text becomes mysterious, overloaded, oneiric: vivified by <strong>the</strong><br />

name <strong>and</strong> biography <strong>of</strong> Freud, by <strong>the</strong> children <strong>of</strong> whom he has such dreams, by his dreams <strong>of</strong> a<br />

familial dest<strong>in</strong>y <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> analytic movement generally, by <strong>the</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>child, by <strong>the</strong><br />

jealous gr<strong>and</strong>-fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> psychoanalysis, Beyond <strong>the</strong> Pleasure Pr<strong>in</strong>ciple becomes a rebus <strong>in</strong> which<br />

noth<strong>in</strong>g rema<strong>in</strong>s simply constative, <strong>the</strong>oretical, <strong>in</strong> which what we th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>of</strong> as a work <strong>and</strong> a life lose<br />

<strong>the</strong> identity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir separateness, <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> force <strong>of</strong> desire, <strong>the</strong> Freudian conatus, unsettles<br />

any objectivity. <strong>The</strong> entry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> author, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> author's biography <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> text multi-determ<strong>in</strong>es<br />

<strong>the</strong> scene <strong>of</strong> its writ<strong>in</strong>g, dissolves any putative assumptions that an author's life does not belong<br />

with his work, or belongs to it only improperly. Read<strong>in</strong>g biographically is not a neutralis<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

simplify<strong>in</strong>g activity. So far from function<strong>in</strong>g as an ideal figure, from figur<strong>in</strong>g as a function <strong>of</strong><br />

Cartesian certitude, <strong>the</strong> author operates as a pr<strong>in</strong>ciple <strong>of</strong> uncerta<strong>in</strong>ty <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> text, like <strong>the</strong><br />

Heisenbergian scientist whose presence <strong>in</strong>variably disrupts <strong>the</strong> scientificity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> observation.<br />

More than any rhetorical solicitation, <strong>the</strong> re-entry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g disrupts its claims<br />

to objectivity, allows energies <strong>and</strong> forces that exceed <strong>and</strong> elude its read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> programmatic or<br />

l<strong>in</strong>guistic terms. 'A 'doma<strong>in</strong>" is opened', <strong>Derrida</strong> writes, '<strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>scription . . . <strong>of</strong> a subject <strong>in</strong><br />

his text . . . is also <strong>the</strong> condition for <strong>the</strong> pert<strong>in</strong>ence <strong>and</strong> performance <strong>of</strong> a text . . . <strong>The</strong> notion <strong>of</strong><br />

truth is quite <strong>in</strong>capable <strong>of</strong> account<strong>in</strong>g for this performance.'49<br />

Critical <strong>the</strong>ory, as we say, has shown itself no more capable <strong>of</strong> account<strong>in</strong>g for authorial<br />

performance, <strong>of</strong> negotiat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> overlap <strong>of</strong> work <strong>and</strong> life, s<strong>in</strong>ce all <strong>the</strong>ory is f<strong>in</strong>ally predicated upon<br />

an idea <strong>of</strong> order <strong>and</strong> systematicity, a reduction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>of</strong> text to a clear uncluttered field, to a<br />

given whose genealogy is suspended. Though criticism can <strong>in</strong> practice read a text <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> its<br />

tropes, aporias, rhetorics, words on <strong>the</strong> page, <strong>and</strong> also read <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> biography, psychological<br />

dynamics, authorial <strong>in</strong>scription, <strong>and</strong> do so without obvious contradiction, <strong>the</strong> propagation <strong>of</strong> a<br />

<strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g which takes stock <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong>se determ<strong>in</strong>ants is awesomely difficult<br />

to conceive. <strong>The</strong> question <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> author tends to vary from read<strong>in</strong>g to read<strong>in</strong>g, author to author.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are greater <strong>and</strong> lesser degrees <strong>of</strong> authorial <strong>in</strong>scription, certa<strong>in</strong> authors occupy vastly more<br />

significant positions than o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluence, <strong>the</strong> attraction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> biographical<br />

referent varies from author to author, text to text, textual moment to textual moment. Each new<br />

act <strong>of</strong> read<strong>in</strong>g itself presupposes a different or modified philosophy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> author. A <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

author, or <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> author, cannot withst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> read<strong>in</strong>g, for <strong>the</strong>re is not<br />

an absolute cogito <strong>of</strong> which <strong>in</strong>dividual authors are <strong>the</strong> subalternant mani-festations, but authors,<br />

many authors, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> differences (<strong>in</strong> gender, history, class, ethnology, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> scientific,<br />

philosophical, <strong>and</strong> literary authorship, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> degree <strong>of</strong> authorship itself) that exist between<br />

authors—with<strong>in</strong> authorship—defy reduction to any universalis<strong>in</strong>g aes<strong>the</strong>tic. 50<br />

Yet <strong>the</strong> promulgation <strong>of</strong> a textual <strong>the</strong>ory can no more elude <strong>the</strong> question <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> author than<br />

conta<strong>in</strong> it. As we have seen, <strong>the</strong> essential problem posed by <strong>the</strong> author is that whilst authorial<br />

subjectivity is <strong>the</strong>oretically unassimilable, it cannot be practically circumvented. <strong>The</strong> processes <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>tention, <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>and</strong> revision, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terfertility <strong>of</strong> life <strong>and</strong> work, autobiography <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

autobiographical, author-functions, signature effects, <strong>the</strong> proper name <strong>in</strong> general, <strong>the</strong> author-ity<br />

<strong>and</strong> creativity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> critic, all <strong>the</strong>se are po<strong>in</strong>ts at which <strong>the</strong> question <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> author exerts its<br />

pressure on <strong>the</strong> textual enclosure. Notions such as <strong>the</strong> Dead <strong>Author</strong>, <strong>the</strong> over-prosecuted<br />

fallacies <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>tention, personalism <strong>and</strong> genesis, function as little more than defensive strategies<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> essentially overdeterm<strong>in</strong>ed nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> text, an overdeterm<strong>in</strong>ation which lies outside<br />

<strong>the</strong> compass <strong>of</strong> any extant <strong>the</strong>oretical programme or charter. Indeed a concerted programme <strong>of</strong><br />

authorial re<strong>in</strong>scription may well be <strong>in</strong>conceivable under <strong>the</strong> banner <strong>of</strong> literary <strong>the</strong>ory; it could even<br />

be that s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>ory became possible with <strong>the</strong> exclusion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> author, <strong>the</strong> author signals <strong>the</strong><br />

impossibility <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory. This is a conclusion to be resisted, <strong>and</strong> one that can only be resisted by<br />

<strong>the</strong>orists <strong>the</strong>mselves, for <strong>the</strong> question <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> author poses itself ever more urgently, not as a<br />

question with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory but as <strong>the</strong> question <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory, <strong>of</strong> its doma<strong>in</strong>s <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir limits, <strong>of</strong> its<br />

adequacy to <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> texts <strong>the</strong>mselves, to <strong>the</strong> genealogy <strong>and</strong> modes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir existence. And it
