24 Wednesday May 30 2018 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi MY PRIDE AND JOY SELWYN TIMES Back to back national champion To call a 12 year old one of the greats may seem a little premature but when it comes to two-time New Zealand champion kart racer Jacob Douglas, the label may just fit. For one so young, he already has an impressive line-up of wins, titles, and experiences. “Last year,” says Jacob’s father Craig, “Jake raced for (sponsor) Aluminos at Supernats 21 in Las Vegas, Nevada, which is probably the biggest kart meeting on the planet.” Jacob has also represented New Zealand in Italy, raced in Thailand and California, and has several New Zealand and local titles. He’s the only driver to win back to back NZ championships in his class. Jacob lives in Lincoln with his mum and dad, Rowena and Craig, and twin sister Hayley. It is fair to say they are a family of high achievers. “I’ve taught my children that it is okay to want to be the best,” Craig says. While Jacob takes to the track, Hayley is making her own statement on the ice rink. Which makes for a gruelling schedule, but for a family that is passionate about and supportive of each other’s efforts and achievements, it’s all in a day’s work. Jacob attends Medbury School in Christchurch. They are encouraging of his endeavours but also demand he maintains his school work and grades, which he does and has done since he started kart racing at the age of 8. The international and national racing schedule demands dedication, commitment, and a mental strength beyond most 12 year olds and lest you fall into the trap of thinking it is dad’s dream and not Jacob’s, spend five minutes with Jacob and the thought is easily dispelled. Jacob’s knowledge of racing is astounding, and his passion and dream for the future is unquestioned. When asked where he wants to be in ten years, his answer is unequivocal, “in F1 (Formula One), or on the road to it.” If not F1? “It’d be cool to do open wheels – but V8s, then.” With people like Craig Baird, Scott McLaughlan, Kenny Smith and Greg Murphy watching Jacob’s rise, he has a solid future lined up. Jacob is quick, however, to acknowledge that he can’t do it alone. He is supported by a dedicated team of coaches and mentors, and sponsors like Aluminos in the United States. Local sponsors and Jacob’s coaches, Matthew and Tiffany Hamilton, who between them have numerous national and world racing titles and who own WKS KartStore in Christchurch, recognise Jacob’s potential and believe in him. They are some of his strongest supporters. “To do what he’s done in Thailand, when he won there and to do so well in Italy and America – he’s really very good,” Matthew says. “There are a few kids in New Zealand who have got what it takes but Jacob is definitely the top of that age group and he’s proven that two years in a row. Anyone who wins nationals back to back has certainly got talent.” Jacob Douglas is another name to watch in New Zealand motorsport. He has F1 square in his sights but he is also aware of the challenging road ahead. Even with the right support in place, adequate sponsorship, and in a highly competitive structure, it comes down to just a couple of things, Jacob’s attitude and his natural talent and ability. When asked why he’s so good, his response sings. “The practise and the effort of the people around me and how much I want it, if I had the same people and their effort around me but I didn’t put in the effort, I wouldn’t be any good.” Winning words from a 12 year old. And what’s it like being number one in New Zealand? Jacob thinks for a moment, and with a modest smile, says, “it’s cool”.
