Lynnfield Water
District will be
flushing water mains
The Lynnfield Water District
will be flushing fire hydrants
continuing through mid-June.
Hydrant flushing is an important
preventative maintenance
activity, enabling the
District to remove sediment or
other solids that may collect in
the water mains. Flushing also
helps to maintain water quality
and fire flows in the distribution
system.
Flushing may result in temporary
water discoloration for
a short time, which should dissipate
after running the cold
water until clear. Discoloration
may stain laundry, especially
white materials. Residents are
asked to check their water prior
Catering
to doing laundry, and delay
doing laundry until any discoloration
of the water clears up.
Washing a dark load first is
recommended after flushing is
completed.
If, after flushing, water pressure
or volume seems low,
residents should clean faucet
screens to remove any silt
or sediment that may be obstructing
water flow.
Lynnfield Water District
serves the southern on-third of
the town of Lynnfield. More
information on the District is
available at www.lwdma.us.
Editor’s note: These remarks
were delivered at the town’s annual
Memorial Day celebration
by Lynnfield Veterans Services
Officer Bruce Siegel.
Good morning, and welcome
to Lynnfield’s annual Memorial
Day celebration. It’s great to see
you all here this morning. For
those of you who don’t know
me, my name is Bruce Siegel,
and I am Lynnfield’s Veteran’s
Services Officer.
What does Memorial Day
mean to you? It’s a day to honor
the men and women who died
while serving in the U.S. military.
We are here today to recognize
and honor those that never
came home. The brave men and
women who paid the ultimate
sacrifice to serve, protect, and
defend our great nation. We
collectively share our heartfelt
sorrow and gratitude.
Each Memorial Day, our nation
says, “thank you,” to those
who serve, and think – perhaps
only momentarily – of those
service members and families
who paid the ultimate price for
our freedom.
The majority of Americans
have had the distinct luxury of
never knowing war – what it
does to a person, to a family, to
a community – and so, for them,
Memorial Day is just that: a
day. But for those families
who have buried a loved one,
they know that war is hell, and
Interior & Exterior
Finished Carpentry. Custom made Cabinets.
New Decks. Any repairs around your home.
Power Washing. And many more...
grief knows no bounds. War is
a burden which transcends time
and space.
Veterans make us humble.
They teach us lessons. As heroes,
they face death for others
with no thought of personal
gain or glory. The sacrifices
our veterans have made should
not be forgotten. With profound
respect and admiration, I thank
all who have served, and those
who continue to serve this great
country.
This is the cost of war: the
price our veterans, service
members, and their families
have paid for our nation’s
freedom. This Memorial Day,
we must all remember this cost.
Remember our fallen service
members and veterans, and remember
the families they left
behind.
Remember the emails home,
the prayers whispered, the
hearts broken, and the lives cut
short. Remember our military
caregivers, and remember those
among us who continue to battle
the invisible wounds of war.
Thus, while we celebrate
their heroism by gathering here
today on Lynnfield Common,
I urge you to remember the
weight that this day, and every
day holds for the Families of the
Fallen. I urge you to take a moment
to remember those who
have made the ultimate sacrifice
in defense of our nation, and to
58,000 patriots who made the
ultimate sacrifice in that war.
of the tremendous sacrifices
that our Vietnam veterans
and their families made for this
country, and I’m very proud to
be part of that generation.”
BY LINDSEY RYAN
Dedication to education is all
in a day’s work for the Lynnfield
Athletic Association (LAA) run
by President Kristen Shinnick,
President-Elect Amy Nardone,
Kerrianne Allain, Maria Terris,
Anne Mitchell, Jodene Sanford
and Eileen Vittiglio.
The scholarships are being
awarded as a part of the Senior
Awards Night at 6:30 p.m. in
the school auditorium. The
LAA scholarship is the largest
to be awarded.
Over the past 10 years
the LAA has donated over
$200,000 worth of equipment,
uniforms and scholarships to
the Lynnfield High School student
athletes. The winners of the
scholarships will be announced
today: Out of 18 applicants, 10
will be accepted.
“Our mission is to recognize
the role athletics play in the
education and development
of Lynnfield High School students,”
said Shinnick. “We
have given out $15,000 in
scholarships for the past two
years. It’s the highest amount
of scholarships awarded to the
outgoing senior class. We are
doing 10 $1,500 scholarships
this year.”
The LAA provides financial
support to the Lynnfield High
School Athletics programs,
as well as instilling a sense of
school pride in all athletes and
the community.
The $15,000 the LAA raised
for the kids is generated by
working long hours at the
Snack Shack during games,
the 4th of July Road Race and
selling the Superfan T-shirts to
promote school spirit. All the
money raised goes back to the
kids when the scholarship winners
are announced.
“We work really hard and the
LAA board works so hard year
long and to see it come to fruition
at the end to award kids
money is the most rewarding
part of LAA,” said Amy
Nardone.
“One hundred percent of
what we do goes back to the
kids whether it be the scholarships
or helping subsidize uniforms
or helping with something
the team needs, they can
always come to us. If we have
the funds we can help them,”
said Kerrianne Allain, “It’s
great to see all of what we do go
back to the kids.”
Lynnfield High School has
a wide range of athletics all of
which at some point will need
new equipment, and the LAA
is right there on the front lines
to help the athletes in whatever
they need.
“This year we are donating
to the new track that they just
put in at the middle school to
help buy equipment because
we’ve never been able to have
a full track program or host a
track meet,” said Shinnick. “We
support what benefits the most
amount of kids.”
Smart money
moves for new
college graduates
WAKEFIELD — More than
70 percent of college graduates
began their career owing more
than $37,000 in student loans
in 2017. Considering the additional
living expenses they’ll
soon face, new college graduates
would be wise to focus on
their financial future right now,
according to The Savings Bank.
The Bank has highlighted
smart financial decisions college
graduates should consider
to position themselves for financial
success as they embark
on their next phase of life.
“The habits new graduates develop
right now will have a big
effect on their financial future,”
said Bob DiBella, president of the
Savings Bank. “Living expenses
add up quickly once you’re out
on your own, and many young
adults who didn’t plan ahead are
delaying major milestones like
getting married or buying a home
because of their financial situation.
The good news is that you
can have a bright financial future
if you think strategically about
money right out of the gate.”
The Savings Bank recommends
the following financial
tips for new college graduates:
● Live within your means.
Supporting yourself can be expensive,
and you can quickly
find yourself struggling financially
if you don’t take time to
create a budget.
● Pay bills on time. Missed
payments can hurt your credit
history for up to seven years and
can affect your ability to get loans,
the interest rates you pay and
your ability to get a job or rent an
apartment. Consider setting up
automatic payments for regular
expenses like student loans, car
payments and phone bills.
● Avoid racking up too much
debt. Understand the responsibilities
and benefits of credit.
● Plan for retirement. It may
seem odd since you’re just beginning
your career, but now is
the best time to start planning for
your retirement. Contribute to retirement
accounts like a Roth IRA
or your employer’s 401(k), especially
if there is a company match.
● Prepare for emergencies.
Start an emergency fund and do
your best to set aside the equivalent
of three to six months’
worth of living expenses. Start
saving immediately, no matter
how small the amount.
SELECTING A BLOOD THINNER
“Blood-thinning” drugs help prevent the formation of blood clots in the legs that
travel to the lungs (causing potentially life-threatening pulmonary embolism) by
preventing the body from producing blood-clotting factors (proteins in the liver that
contribute to the blood-clotting process). While warfarin (Coumadin) has traditionally
been the “blood-thinner” of choice, newer drugs such as dabigatran (Pradaxa),
rivaroxaban (Xarelto), apixaban (Eliquis), and edoxaban (Savaysa) have also
become available. Warfarin, however, remains the best option for patients who
have a mechanical heart valve or take blood thinners to manage atrial fibrillation
due to a rheumatic heart valve. In addition, while the newer blood thinners require
less monitoring, dabigatran is the only one that currently has an antidote to reverse
excessive bleeding.
Clotting isn't always a bad thing: When you cut yourself, it's what seals your
wound and keeps you from losing too much blood. Blood thinners prevent clotting,
so even tiny cuts or bruises will bleed a lot more if you take these drugs. Some
people only need blood thinners for a few months. But if you have ongoing health
problems, you may need to take them every day. For more information, please call
VILLAGE PHARMACY at 781-334-3133, or see us in the Colonial Shopping Center.
P.S. If bleeding occurs while taking warfarin, the effects of the drug can be
reversed with a drug called phytonadione (a synthetic form of vitamin K) or with
fresh frozen plasma (FFP).
A big milestone for coach O’Brien
By Anne Marie Tobin
BELMONT -- The Lynnfield baseball
team defeated Burlington 1-0 in the
opening round of the 14th Brendan Grant
Memorial Baseball Tournament Friday at
Belmont High School.
Not only did the Pioneers play “their
cleanest game of the year,” they made
the day a memorable one for coach John
O’Brien, who picked up the 200th win of
his Lynnfield coaching career.
“It was a fantastic game,” O’Brien said.
“I told the kids before the game that I
wanted to beat this team badly, and was
something deep down I really wanted to
get today as this tournament has always
been very special and dear to me. Our defense
was tremendous, our pitching was
outstanding, and we managed to scratch
out the one run we needed to win the
game.”
The game was a pitchers’ duel from
start to finish with just six combined hits,
two of them infield squibbers.
Left-hander Fernando Gonzalez delivered
a dominant pitching performance,
allowing just two hits (one infield) with
Giammarco with coach John O’Brien, after beating Belmont in the championship
game of the Brendan Grant Tournament Saturday at Belmont High.
13 strikeouts and one walk. Only one
Burlington batter reached second base
after a sixth inning, two-out wind-assisted
double to right. He was stranded after
center fielder Clayton Marengi made the
defensive play of the game with a diving
catch of a sinking line drive that robbed
the Red Devils of the game-tying run.
The only run of the game came after a
careless throwing error by the Burlington
catcher returning the ball after a pitch
opened the door for Cooper Marengi
(on base with a double) to alertly scamper
home from third in the bottom of the
fourth.
“Fernando just just threw strikes, and
we made all the plays behind him,” said
O’Brien. “That was a terrific catch that
Clayton made and I cannot say enough
about Nick Giammarco, who called a
great game behind the plate. Heads up
baserunning by Cooper on that play to
score, and we got some solid play from
(Jonathan) Luders at short and Joey
Mack, who got the start at second base
today. I’m just very happy for the kids.”
O’Brien said a career day on the links
was a sign that it was going to be a good
weekend.
“We had two very good days of practice
and I just broke 100 for the first time with
my lowest round I ever shot (96 at Wayland
Golf Club), so I just had a feeling
that something good was going to happen,”
he said.
Pioneers win Brendan Grant Tournament
By Anne Marie Tobin
BELMONT — Just when you think it couldn’t get any
better for John O’Brien and his Lynnfield Pioneers baseball
team, it does.
Less than 24 hours after O’Brien picked up the 200th
win of his Lynnfield coaching career Friday, the Pioneers
rewarded O’Brien with win No. 201 in the final of the Brendan
Grant Tournament at Belmont High.
For the second straight game, the Pioneers were underdogs
on paper, taking on the iron of the Middlesex League.
But once again, the Pioneers (15-3) were giant killers, defeating
Belmont 7-6, to win their first Grant title (and third
overall) since 2012.
Cooper Marengi jump-started the offense with a 3-run homer
in the first inning, scoring Jonathan Luders and starting
pitcher Matt Fiore, who opened the game with back-to-back
singles.
The Pioneers added four more in the fourth inning. Dan
Jameson led off with double, then Clayton Marengi reached
on an error. Luders singled Jameson home, then Cooper
Marengi singled younger brother Clayton and Luders home,
Fernando Gonzalez, who was named the tournament MVP,
singled Cooper Marengi home to cap the Pioneers scoring.
The seventh inning, however, was a bit of an adventure.
Fiore pitched four and two-thirds innings and was relieved
by Nick Torosian, who inherited a 7-5 lead. He gave up an
unearned run in the sixth to go into the final inning with a
7-6 lead. With one out, he hit a batter, then helped his own
cause when he tracked down a ball on the third base line and
fired to first to get out No. 2.
He intentionally walked the next batter, who had homered
in the first inning, then walked another batter to load the
bases. He buckled down and struck out the final batter to
preserve the win.
“He answered the bell and made some big pitches today,”
said O’Brien. “He made that great play in the infield, and
came up big for us. The kids came to play today. Luders,
Joey Mack at second and Nick Giammarco came up with
three double plays today, Danny Jameson had half a dozen
big scoops at first and played great D, and we had a great
and I think that also was a factor today in that the kids wanted
to beat them.”
Girls Lacrosse finishes strong
By Anne Marie Tobin
LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield girls
lacrosse team finished the regular season
season on a high note with a 14-1 rout of St.
Mary’s Monday night at Pioneer Stadium.
Going into the game, the Pioneers expected
a strong fight from the Spartans,
who needed a win in their final game to
qualify for the tournament.
In the end, however, it was all Lynnfield,
with seven Pioneers logging goals, despite
a solid effort from former Pioneer goalie
Lauren Vaccaro.
Olivia Sarni led the offense with five
goals. St. Anselm commit Liv Smyrnios
added three goals and three assists and
Ashley Barrett scored twice. Jenna Lannon,
Sophia Ellis, Liz Sykes and Tori Morelli
each scored one goal. Morelli also logged
five draw controls and Gracie Sperling
dished two assists.
Draws were a key part of Lynnfield’s
win.
“We did a pretty good job on the draws,”
Pioneers coach Ethan Blanchette said.
“We’ve done well against teams we should
beat and we struggle on it against strong
competition. That’s something we’ll continue
to work on.”
Lynnfield raced out to a 5-0 lead in the
first 15 minutes thanks to four goals from
Sarni and one from Smyrnios. St. Mary’s
got one back with 8:25 to play in the half
but Smyrnios answered 15 seconds later.
“We don’t have any one player that we
rely on,” Blanchette said. “Ashley, Olivia
and Liv have all led the team in goals multiple
times this season. We have several
players that can score goals in bunches.
Olivia has done a good job this season.”
Lynnfield closed the half with two goals
from Barrett and one goal each from Sarni
and Morelli, to lead 10-1 at recess.
With a nine-goal lead, the Pioneers put in
on cruise control in the second half.
“When you possess the ball, you’re able
to control the game,” Blanchette said.
“That’s what we were able to do today. We
had the ball way more than they did. Our
attackers did a good job forcing turnovers
in the re-defend and our defense did a good
job limiting their scoring opportunities.”
The Pioneers finished 11-7 and await the
tournament pairings, which are to be announced
Friday.
The Pioneers (10-7) celebrated Senior
Night with a non-league win at Pioneer
Stadium. Fittingly, their three seniors led
the way. Defender Hannah Filipe scored
the first varsity goal of her career in the
second half. Liv Smyrnios led the scoring
with seven goals and also had three draw
controls and three caused turnovers and
Gracie Sperling had a solid all-around game
with two goals, four ground balls and five
draw controls. Tori Morelli dominated the
draw circle with 10 wins along with three
caused turnovers, two ground balls and a
goal. Ashley Barrett (3 goals), Liz Sykes,
and Jen Flynn also scored. Brianna Barrett
picked up four ground balls.
IPSWICH — Lynnfield sophomore
Ben Kramich made it
look easy Saturday at the Eastern
Mass Division 4 Outdoor
Track Championship meet at Ipswich
High. Battling oppressive
heat and humidity, Kramich was
cool as a cucumber and blew
away the field in the pole vault,
smashing his PR by nearly a foot
en route to a first place finish.
Kramich jumped 12-06, to win
by a foot over runner-up Sam
Lombardo.
Teammate Kevin Travers
also jumped 11-06 and finished
fourth. The duo combined for
13 points, more than half of
the Pioneers’ team total of 24,
which was good enough for 11th
place in the 44-team field.
Nick Kinnon, who set meet
records last year in the 100 and
200, was hampered by a leg injury
yet still managed to finish
second in the 100 (23.10) and
eighth in the 200 (12.66).
The 4x800 relay team of Jack
Campbell, Ryan Iapicca, Matt
finished ninth (9:00.95), while
the 4x100 relay team of Jack
were turned in by Ryan Bey,
11th in the pole vault (9-06), and
Chris Deschenes (38-06), Cohee
(38-02) and Sieger (34-00), who
finished 14th, 17th and 20th respectively
in the triple jump.
Boys tennis completes perfect season
By Anne Marie Tobin
LYNNFIELD -- The Lynnfield
boys tennis team (15-0)
started seven seniors and made
history Thursday, completing its
first undefeated season in program
history with a 5-0 shutout
win over Swampscott (10-6) at
Lynnfield Middle School on Senior
Day.
“Nobody knows for sure but I
think it was the first time a Lynnfield
boys tennis team was undefeated
in the regular season,”
said athletic director Michael
Bierwirth.
“Regardless, it was an incredible
accomplishment.”
Max Rothermund won at first
singles, 6-1, 6-0 and Arlex Correa
won at second singles, 6-3-6-
2. Colin Lamusta completed the
singles sweep with a 6-3, 2-6,
6-0 win at third singles.
In doubles, Lorenzo Russo and
Michael Gentile took the first
match, 6-2, 6-0, while Andrew
Seelig and Andy DePalma took
the second doubles match, 6-1,
6-4.
“The boys have worked very
hard this season and they deserve
this,” said Pioneer coach
Joe Dunn, Sr.
“They have taken the program
from five wins just two years
ago to being a tournament team
last year and now Cape Ann
League champion for the first
time since 2003.
Now, we just wait until the
tournament brackets come out,
but we should be the top seed
from what I can see, so hopefully
if all goes well, we can keep
things moving in the right direction.”
GIRLS TENNIS
Austin Prep 3, Lynnfield 2
At the Boston Sports Club
Monday, the Pioneers fell to
13-4 with a loss to the perennial
Catholic Central League
champion Cougars. Lynnfield
winners were Emma Gallucci
at third singles (6-0, 6-4) and
Celeste Joly and Clare Yange at
second doubles (6-3, 6-2).
First singles Megan Nevils
took the first set 6-3 and had
match point at 6-5 in the second,
but Marie-Elena Gerety rallied
to take the second set 7-6 and
then took the match in a super
tie-breaker, 10-8.
“We had some chances but
could not convert,” said Lynnfield
coach Craig Stone. “Austin
Prep played extremely well and
deserved the win.”
