The couple have also been bestowed with the
Scottish title of Earl and Countess of Dumbarton,
and the newly created Northern Irish title of Baron
and Baroness Kilkeel.

There has only been one previous Duke of Sussex:
Prince Augustus Frederick (left), the sixth son –
and ninth child – of George III. Like Harry and
Meghan, the Duke lived in Kensington Palace,
where he died in 1843, aged 70.
Augustus was married twice, but his father did
not approve of either match and did not give his
consent. As a result, neither of the Duke’s children
was considered a legitimate heir and the dukedom
became extinct nearly 200 years ago.
Sir Nicholas Soames, MP for Mid Sussex, tweeted:
“Great news Prince Harry created Duke of Sussex.
Mid Sussex will be delighted to welcome them on
their irst visit #Sussexatitsbest.”
In accepting a dukedom, Harry follows in the
footsteps of other royal males, who are traditionally
given new titles on marriage.
His brother William was gifted the Duchy of
Cambridge when he married; Harry’s uncle Prince
Andrew became the Duke of York and another
uncle, Prince Edward, was given the title Earl of
Wessex – Edward will become Duke of
H
Edinburgh on his father’s death.
