Why did you want to grow your hair
ahead of your wedding, Millie? Did
you have a specific style in mind?
“I’m getting super excited about the
wedding now. I don’t want to give
away too much but I wanted to grow
my hair for the style I’m planning. I
also want my hair to look super
healthy and in good condition. That’s
something that I’ve struggled with for
a couple of years. I’ve found that it
breaks all the time and stays at the
same length – I haven’t been able to
get it to grow. I love long hair because
you can do loads of fun styles with it.
“I also think it’s really important
that the hair doesn’t take anything
away from the dress. It all has to work
in synergy.”
What have you done to help it grow?
“I’ve been taking Lumity
supplements; they’re also good for
my nails, which have become really
strong. And I’ve been really happy
with my hair and my skin.
“I’ve also been using the Kérastase
Extentioniste products, which are
great for brides or anyone who wants
that extra couple of inches.
“James [Galvin] at Kérastase has
been giving me regular trims – he
calls them micro-trims. Just a tiny bit
off every six to eight weeks, which has
really helped; normally I’d go every
couple of months. He will take off
about half a centimetre, so you don’t
really notice it. It’s the worst when
hairdressers take off loads, especially
before your wedding. Luckily, I really
trust James.”
Have you changed your usual haircare
routine since the hair growth?
“I’ve been a lot more careful with
using hair tools and have been using
a really good heat protector,
Resistance Ciment Thermique. And
just being more gentle with my hair
generally. I would say that using a
heat protector is key for antibreakage.
James showed me a way to
straighten my hair – he said if you go
over it slowly, you’re basically frying
it, so go over it quite quickly.
“I was worried that I was getting
breakage from tying my hair up so
I’ve been putting my hair up with
clips rather than ties – or using
Invisibobble curly ties that are like
telephone cords.
“I’ve been applying regular masks,
too. So I will put a mask on and go
into the steam room, which is
another tip James has given me – I’ll
do that once a week. Kérastase does
this really amazing treatment called
Fusio-Dose – it makes
your hair so shiny and it
dries really nicely.
Depending on how my
hair feels, I use it once
a month or every two
weeks. I will literally be
using it on the day of
the wedding.”
How far in advance of
your wedding should
you book your hair trial?
“It depends on the bride and if you
think you’re going to need more
than one trial. I’ve been meeting
James for two months and whenever
he does my hair we’ve been talking
about it and having a play around.
He understands the look I want and
he understands my hair.
“We’re going to do a trial with the
make-up artist, too – and I’m really
excited for that. We’ll probably do it
two or three weeks before.”
‘I want my hair to
look super healthy
and in good
condition. It’s really
important that it
doesn’t take anything
away from the dress’
How does bridal hair differ from
wedding-guest hair?
“It depends on what you’re wearing –
I don’t stick to the same hairstyle for
every wedding. As a guest, I really
love the halo braid. I love plaits – or
something in the hair like a
headband is nice. It depends on the
wedding. Sometimes I’ll do up-dos if
it’s somewhere hot, because you
don’t want your hair getting frizzy –
and hair on the back of your neck is
a nightmare. It’s down to where the
wedding is and what the dress code is
– and what I’m wearing. I’ll decide
on my hair after I’ve decided what
I’m wearing.”
Do you have any hair
regrets?
“Yes: when I decided to
get a fringe a couple of
years ago. I’ve got quite
a lot of hair and it’s
quite fine and wavy. In
humidity it can frizz. I
can do a basic blow-dry
but I’m not amazing at
styling. I didn’t get a grip on that
fringe; there was a lot of pinning it
back. I didn’t own the fringe, the
fringe owned me. That won’t happen
again but you have to try things.”
Who are your hair idols?
“Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s hair is
always well styled. My friend Zara
Martin has insane hair. She wakes up
in the morning and it looks silky and
perfect and it’s down to her waist –
major hair envy. That’s the dream.”
