(03) 341 8973 christchurch@carznvanz.co.nz ELECTRIC vehicles are the big talking point at the moment, and as battery technology advances and motorists realise that electric cars are here to stay, that part of the market will go gangbusters before long. However, we shouldn’t forget the conventional hybrid, the petrol/electric models, those which contributed largely to the way we see electric cars today. Toyota was almost singlehandedly responsible for kick-starting the hybrid revolution, and today the company has a wealth of hybrid offerings that have been willingly accepted by buyers globally. Toyota’s Prius was the one of the first out of the blocks and it epitomises all things hybrid, and Toyota has extended that technology through a wide range of product including Lexus. One of the first Lexus hybrid models here was the CT200h, an affordable five-door liftback, it has just had a makeover which makes it even more desirable. Most of the changes are minor and are cosmetic, but they blend well with the improvement process Lexus has across its range. They enhance the quality feel and look of the CT200h, and it must be said it is a car which sits in the prestige market encompassing all of the elements which made Lexus a standout luxury car builder. The CT200h lands here in just two variations. It is priced at $51,690, while an extra $11,000 will get you into leather through F Sport specification. The test car was the latter and, while it is very much Priuslike in the way it drives mechanically, it is still a car which offers a sporty sensation along with the fuel-saving and emissioncaring attributes you would expect from any hybrid. The CT200h isn’t a large car, at just over 4.3m it is compact, yet its five-door body style lends itself well to those who don’t often have the need for a full five-seater. There are five seats in the CT200h, but there isn’t a huge amount of space rearwards. That aside, those who do travel Motoring Ross Kiddie LEXUS CT200h: Quality feel. in the CT200h will be comfortable, the seat shapes are cosseting and true of the Lexus spirit, ride quality is superb. Saying that, in F Sport specification there is definite firming within the sport tuned suspension so that its handling is biased more towards dynamic, but there is enough compliance so that bumps and ruts aren’t transmitted into the in-cabin area, uneven road surfaces are absorbed by the fully independent front strut/rear double wishbone system. Up front sits a 1.8-litre, twin-camshaft engine, it is pretty much the standard hybrid system which sits in a host of Toyota and Lexus models. Power is rated at 73kW with an extra 27kW available through electric delivery. But where the performance benefits arrive is from the extra torque electric power generates – 40Nm on top of 142Nm. The CT200h feels energetic when all elements are combining to form acceleration. It will reach 100km/h from a standstill in just under 10sec and will lunge through a highway overtake in 6.8sec. While these figures don’t represent a fast car, they are misleading; the CT200h feels crisp, and if The Star Compact Lexus hybrid gets upgrade • Price – Lexus CT200h F Sport, $62,690 • Dimensions – Length, 4355mm; width, 1765mm; height, 1455mm • Configuration – Four-cylinder, frontwheel-drive, 1798cc, 100kW, 142Nm, continuously variable automatic. • Performance – 0-100km/h, 9.9sec • Fuel usage – 4.1l/100km you add into the equation its wonderful handling feel and strength out of a corner, performance is guaranteed. On the subject of figures, Lexus also claim a 4.1-litre per 100km (69mpg) combined cycle fuel usage average for the CT200h, which wasn’t that far distant to the 5.2l/100km (54mpg) figure on display in the test car’s comprehensive trip computer readouts, and if you add in the driver-controlled threemode drive system – sport, normal or economy – the CT200h can be driven easily to coincide with driving conditions, gleaning maximum economy or performance as the driver deems appropriate. Personally, I preferred normal mode, you can still extract mid-range boost as required without the engine being too lively, taking into account that the drive system is biased towards electric power being the chosen mode of drive. On that subject, power is transferred through a continuously variable automatic transmission, there are no special skills needed to drive the CT200h, it is intuitive and user-friendly. I particularly enjoyed my time with it. One of my work colleagues also shares my enthusiasm. He searched for a very long time before buying a pre-owned car. His choice wasn’t a CT200h but that was a car that was high on his wish list. He liked the dynamics of the model and its concept. His decision not to buy one was based solely on affordability, and although the CT200h is a bargain luxury car, the preowned hybrid market still demands good coin.
