5K RACE BENEFITED
WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECT
West Allegheny High School seniors Barb Lesko and Meghan Boocks,
pictured above, coordinated a successful 5K Run/2 Mile Walk in April
to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project, a foundation providing aid to injured service
members. Despite inclement weather, it was a successful turnout, with 102 participants.
The event also served as the girls’ senior project. Thanks to all who participated in this
event.
SCOUTS CELEBRATE EARTH DAY WITH TREE PLANTING
To celebrate Earth Day 2012, on April 22 in North Fayette, over 40 volunteers from Cub
Scout Pack 848, Girl Scout Troop 50432, and Daisy Troop 56108 partnered with North
Fayette Parks and Recreation to plant 75 white pine trees and 20 dogwood trees at
Donaldson Community Park. Parks and Recreation groundskeeper Shaun Leslie spraypainted
spots on the ground in various locations around the park to indicate where
parents and kids should dig out holes for planting.
The same group of volunteers is hoping to come together later this summer to plant
milkweed seeds to establish a monarch butterfly sanctuary in the park and help replenish
the once-thriving native habitat. Since monarchs lay their eggs only on milkweed (and is
the only plant that monarch caterpillars eat), it's essential to the survival of the butterfly
species that milkweed be available and plentiful.
A special thank you to Chris Kiss, Liz Parker, Linda Pottle, Shaun Leslie, and Bob
Brozovich for organizing this successful event.
